5 Characters From Series 8 That Should Be In Series 9
Guest contributor Bailey Aston shares his wish list.
Just as the big reveal about Missy and Kate Stewart’s returns shocked the nation, I wondered who else Moffat could announce to return next. Series 8 contained most of the strongest characters from both the classic and revived era, but which ones were strong enough to deserve a return in the next series? Here, I will examine the potential of some of the amazing characters, and why they deserve a return in the next series. Without further ado, here begins my list:
5. Perkins
4. Karabraxos
One of the few known people in the Whoniverse to have the Doctor’s phone number, Karabraxos was a ruthless woman who wanted nothing more than to rule her bank from her own private vault. Creating clones of herself to run the bank smoothly, Karabraxos would not hesitate to incinerate them if they let her down. Played by the magnificent Keeley Hawes, Karabraxos found a chance at redemption when calling the Doctor from the future to tell him about her plan and the Teller. Unlike others from Series 8, Karabraxos was one of the best “human” villains, and although it might not happen, it would be nice to see her again, maybe thanking the Doctor for helping her see sense.
3. Journey Blue
“Into the Dalek” had only just started, and already Journey’s brother Kai has been brutally killed by the Daleks. It’s no surprise that she threatens the Doctor’s life for not saving him, but at the end of the episode it seems that she has had a change of heart. Asking nicely (not as nicely as Gus though) if she can travel alongside him, the Doctor declines, stating he doesn’t want to travel with soldiers. I can’t really say I blame him, because if I was in a time machine with a soldier, I would be scared stiff, as soldiers have the ability to kill in sheer seconds. Anyway, Journey loyally aided the Doctor when they were miniaturised and placed inside an insane Dalek. She even began to take orders from him, which was one of her admirable traits. It takes guts when it’s a life or death situation, and you have to trust “a mad man with a box” with your life. That’s why she’s at number 3, and is definitely strong enough for a potential return.
2. GUS
Sticking to “Mummy on the Orient Express”, many Whovians have been on the edge of their seat when they found out that Gus, the train’s computer, was never really revealed. Many even speculated that he would be part of Missy’s diabolical plan and would return in “Death in Heaven”. I can see why, considering Gus’ monocle resembles a Cyberman eye and the 3W logo, but I believe the truth is something far more sinister. Voiced by John Sessions, Gus wouldn’t be afraid to murder if someone wasn’t obeying his orders. When murdering the cooking crew, he was always very polite and well-mannered. Although the Weeping Angels might be “the only psychopaths in the universe to kill you nicely,” Gus could be “the only psychopath in the universe to kill you politely.” When the Doctor finally managed to stop the Foretold, I developed a theory on who this mysterious “computer” might be. I won’t tell you it, but just a friendly hint: turn the monocle 90 degrees anticlockwise…
1. The Paternoster Gang
This remarkable group would be tied with Kate Stewart for first place, but considering she is already returning, the trophy must instead go to the Paternoster Gang. First appearing in 2011, the gang have appeared in every series onward, making most of their appearances in Series 7. Although there are three unique personalities, the trio never fail to delight audiences with their wonderful portrayal of allies to the Doctor.
Strax provides some humour to the show, whether it be “playing with his grenades” or mixing up genders. Short, stupid and selfless, Strax is definitely the type of Sontaran that Doctor Who needs in Series 9. Next up is Vastra. The leader of the group, Vastra can usually be considered as the “brains” behind the operation. Since their revival in 2010, the Silurians have been quite passive-aggressive toward the Doctor, but one has always been friendly and willing to help. Her eagerness to get the job done, as well as her pairing with Jenny makes Vastra a delightful character, meaning that we want to see more of her! Finally, we get to Jenny, Vastra’s wife. Jenny can usually be considered as the “brawn” behind the operation. Not much more can be said about her, however her fighting skills are most certainly above average.
Moffat should definitely consider making the Paternoster Gang a group of regular characters who the Doctor visits more frequently than he does so. They are just a fantastic trio who bring everything we want to our screens!
