Murray Gold: Doctor Who at a “Precarious Point”, Multiple Versions of Christmas Script Written “Depending on Certain Outcomes”

Long-time Doctor Who composer Murray Gold has described the show as being at a “precarious point” in its history, revealing that multiple versions of the upcoming Christmas special have been written to account for the uncertainties.
Speaking in an interview with the Half the Picture podcast about the state of the series under returning showrunner Russell T Davies, Gold said:
“I think we’re at a precarious point for Doctor Who.” However, he added that he is still “hopeful that it’s all going to be the start of a wonderful new era.”
The comment came as he discussed the wider challenges facing the programme in today’s television landscape. Gold acknowledged how difficult it has become to create genuinely cross-generational family viewing, noting the cultural divide between audiences.
He observed: “I think making this kind of family show is especially difficult because Gen Z feels quite alienated from, or cut off from, the rump of the rest of the living population.”
He added that asking younger viewers to sit down and watch alongside their parents is now “a big ask”, pointing to a shift in audience habits that contrasts sharply with the shared Saturday night experiences that once defined the show’s revival years.
Gold also spoke about the pressures placed on Doctor Who as a cultural institution. Comparing the current era to the more carefree tone of 2005, he reflected:
“There was a lot of knockabout humour in 2005 and fun and sort of what you might call from 20 years later sort of irresponsible fun. And I don’t mean that in a bad way.”
He suggested that the burden of the show’s influence may now be inhibiting that same sense of mischief:
“I think maybe the burden of Doctor Who’s outsized influence on young people at this time maybe is inhibiting it.”
Perhaps most revealing was his comment about the 2026 Christmas special. When asked whether he had begun work, Gold said: “I know that the Christmas, I know Russell’s written I think multiple versions depending on certain outcomes.”
The implication that several versions of the script exist, potentially contingent on viewing figures or casting decisions, will inevitably fuel speculation about the show’s still uncertain direction beyond the 2026 festive episode.
