Best of 2018-19 Awards: The Winners (Part 1)
Last month, Doctor Who TV asked you to vote in our awards celebrating the best of the show from the past year. After 11,000 votes we can now present the first set of results.
Best Visual Effects: “Resolution”
Every area of Series 11 saw a massive shake-up, and the VFX department was no exception. This time, DNEG handled the majority of the heavy lifting. The new year’s special “Resolution” featured a merging of CGI and practical effects that showcased several impressive sequences, including cosmic fireworks, supernovas and of course a Dalek doing what it does best – exterminating.
Best Musical Score: “Demons of the Punjab”
Segun Akinola replaced long-time composer Murray Gold for Series 11. His work was notably different to his predecessor, bringing in stronger atmosphere and a variety of aural flavourings. “Demons of the Punjab” not only featured a special arrangement of the main theme, but also a beautiful musical score throughout. So, it’s no surprise to see the episode at the top of the list.
Best Writer: Pete McTighe
In past DWTV awards, the showrunner has always won this category. However, given the majority of Chris Chibnall’s seven episodes scored on the lower end of the weekly polls, it’s little surprise to see the award this time going instead to one of the other writers. This time the honours go to “Kerblam!” scribe, Pete McTighe, an episode considered by many to be the most “traditional” Doctor Who story of the series.
Best Director: Jamie Childs
While Series 11 proved divisive in many areas, one thing that most can agree on is that it delivered in the visuals. Jamie Childs helmed our first ever glimpse of Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor in the official reveal, before going on to direct four episodes of the main series. Whether it was making a building site in Sheffield look interesting, a trip to the Punjab, the Anti-zone, or battlefields, Childs delivered a treat for the eyes.
Best Redesign: The Title Sequence
“John Smith” was once a Youtuber who wowed fans with some extremely impressive Doctor Who VFX trailers and fun mock-ups, including Wholock. Now he’s working on the show itself and contributed the striking title sequence and the time vortex for Series 11, which both ride the highest on the results this time.
