Doctor Who Spin-Off Reveals “Homo Aqua” as New Name for Sea Devils, as RTD Says Old Term Is “Racist”
The Sea Devils are apparently getting a major update in the upcoming Doctor Who spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea, starting with their name.
Speaking to Radio Times magazine, showrunner Russell T Davies revealed that the creatures will now be known as “Homo Aqua.”
“It’s racist to say Sea Devil,” viewers will apparently learn in the show.
According to IGN, Davies continued by saying that fans should not even call the race “monsters”, as humans would be highlighted as the villains of the series.
Davies revealed: “When they first approached me about coming back to Doctor Who in 2021, this was the first bit of my pitch.”
“I had this idea separately first,” he continued. “But weirdly, it needs the Doctor Who setting. If I just go and pitch this cold, saying, ‘There is a race of creatures that live in the sea,’ they’d say, ‘Really? You sure?’ The pre-existence of the Sea Devils takes all the problems out of it.”
The War Between the Land and the Sea is set to air in December in the UK, and in 2026 on Disney+.
