Doctor Who Officially Invades Minecraft

doctor-who-minecraft-official

BBC Worldwide are delighted to announce a deal with Microsoft Studios and Mojang which will bring Doctor Who – the world’s longest running science fiction drama – to ‘Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition’.

From September 2014, Minecraft players will have access to a range of Doctor Who assets which will allow them to change their avatar to resemble their favourite characters from the show. The first pack – priced at just $2.99/£1.99/€2.85/$2.95AUS – will include a character inspired by the Twelfth Doctor as well as five other Doctors, each of their on-screen companions and some of the Doctor’s most well known adverseries including his arch-nemeses, the Daleks.

Rikesh Desai, Digital Entertainment and Games Director at BBC Worldwide UK says “We’re constantly looking for new and innovative ways to bring Doctor Who content to our loyal fans. Working collaboratively with Microsoft, we’ve created an exciting new product which will allow Doctor Who fans to create their own brand new adventures in the heart of the iconic world of Minecraft.”

The deal will bring more packs as time goes on, introducing many of the most recognisable characters from the past 50 years of Doctor Who. Each skin pack will feature at least six Doctors and will be released regularly following the broadcast of the first episode.

Minecraft is one of the fastest selling Xbox game of all time with over 13 million sales to date. The deal to bring Doctor Who to Minecraft builds on BBC Worldwide’s successful partnership with Microsoft, which has seen Microsoft publish Forza racing games complete with Top Gear themed challenges and features.

Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew, players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things.

It can also be about adventuring with friends or watching the sun rise over a blocky ocean. It’s pretty. Brave players battle terrible things in The Nether, which is more scary than pretty. You can also visit a land of mushrooms if it sounds more like your cup of tea.

people need to tone down the negative comments, if you dont like minecraft then why did you bother reading this article? some people like it, some people hate it, some people love it, and some people just refuse to play a game with these kind of graphics. personaly i love minecraft.. the point being though, if you dont have anything nice to say, dot say it at all. its rude to those who are actually interested in minecraft

Only news this is to is that the BBC should get more funding to spend on improving eps and funding events like the tours ect

I can't stand the game. Well, actually it's alright, I have played it like once or twice and it's okay, but it's nothing special. But what put me off it was my friends like bashing it like mad and talking about only that all the time. Plus, I hate the way a lot of people bash it too, so that like pretty much puts me off completely. It's blocks and pixelated. Oh well, Doctor Who's going anyway. Oh and when I say going.

YAY! Always wanted Doctor Who Minecraft Skins. And I can't get them because I don't have a PC or a Mac (I use iPad, I can do everything I need on it.)

I love Minecraft! I only really play it on PC because I don't have an X Box. I have made my own Minecraft DW skins though, so I'm not to bothered. But they're doing Daleks! Why not PC Minecraft as well?

I'm not much of a gamer tbh. I used to be when I was little, I played games like Pokemon, Kingdom Hearts, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Sonic, Mario, Zelda etc. But I've kind of stopped playing them now. But this is good news for those who like Minecraft and use the XBox 360! :)

I guess this gives me a reason to buy Minecraft on the Xbox 360. But I got bored, and probably more frustrated with the game following the release of that ridiculous and stupid hunger bar. Kills the fun in the game for me, and I was playing in the Beta days. BUT THIS IS A DOCTOR WHO SITE, why am I rambling about my experiences with Minecraft?

The BBC really need to chose who they do exclusives with once and for all. We've had Wii/DS exclusives, PS3/Vita exclusives and now this. We're not made of money, as much as I'm sure we'd love to be, Auntie Beeb. :P

@007 Bond 50 Why does Minecraft cost money? Why does anything cost money? Don't complain about a game costing money. If you mean the skin pack, just get the PC version. Then, all skins, mods, resource packs, etc are free :P

FearReaper9

@lolcats121 Just get the skins for free. Most skins they get for skin packs and texture packs were made by PC players P:

@mrclever Did you not read the part where it said "13 million copies sold on Xbox 360?"  That doesn't include the 20+ million on PC and 5+ million on mobile devices.  So yeah, a lot of people actually play minecraft.

@edoe101 Because they can't charge money for it with the PC Minecraft, plus there are player made skins that look way better than these ones. So yeah.

I'm not a gamer in the conventional sense. I only play, like, three different games (Minecraft, Pokémon, and Amnesia) since those ones just happen to resonate with me for whatever reason. But I really like them nonetheless. :D

I think what's putting me off being a gamer is that everything is so expensive, and I need money for other things! If I had the money I'd imagine I'd spend a lot of time on consoles and what not XD

@Fadedeathdave @edoe101 @ilyootha is back in home Universe I thought it always was like that. There was, though, a problem with Forge as they couldn't properly update it to one of the versions for a long time (1.7 I think). I wonder if they still didn't (I'm a bit ignorant here, haven't followed the mods for month now)

@TardisBoy Get Steam on the PC. It is free, has some great free games, and there are many sales throughout the year.

 Notsosmartguy

@TardisBoy it is pretty expensive. $400/ 500 for a console $60 per game and don't get me started on the special editions.......

@ Notsosmartguy the dalek of Jersey @TardisBoy Let's be honest, there are gamers who are pretty dedicated to the hobby, and they usually find a way around price issues. I for one find myself buying multiple versions of Sonic the Hedgehog games, and that's mainly because I'm a nerdy super fan. I have the original game about 6 or 7 times now, I lost count. If you love your hobby, you'll dedicate yourself to it!

SonicTheHedgehogRules

@yoshfiction @SonicTheHedgehogRules @ Notsosmartguy the dalek of Jersey @TardisBoy In fact, the only reason I got a Wii U was for Lost World! I still think it was rather worth it, and at least I now have a Wii U for the upcoming Smash Bros game. Besides Doctor Who, of course, that is the thing I'm most looking forward to this year. As for Free Riders, there's no way I'm interested in that one. I'm certainly not shilling out £100 for a spy camera. I hate games with gimmick controls.
