Cybermen Invade London (Again!)

Today has seen the Cybermen making a very public appearance in London mimicking one of the most memorable moments from Doctor Who’s history.

The scenes being filmed, believed to be for the Series 8 finale, saw the 2013 versions of the Cybermen outside of St Paul’s Cathedral echoing 1968 episode The Invasion starring Patrick Troughton (pictured below).

This season seems to have a lot of ideas from the classic series.  The Invasion, Planet of Fire and a Dinosaur popping up.  Makes me think there is a definite connection/arc related to previous stories.

I remember the creepiest thing about the Invasion was how deserted London looked when they filmed. I imagine that would be impossible these days

OMG, I just noticed the biggest problem is with the newest redesign:  look at the mouth slit...!!!  It's designed with the side edges slanting outward (like the outside of a V) running parallel with slanted edges of the faceplate. That creates a SMILE effect.  I knew it wasn't my imagination that they seemed happy and not menacing.

Geez, man!  If they wanted to return to the impassive features of the classic cybermen from the black and white serials, HOW did the designers allow this smile to be worked into their tin soldiers????

I love the cybermen's new look! to me they actually look like robots. those cybus ones were awful!

"The Invasion" seems to be the most highly regarded of the Cybermen stories, so if this is anything like it, people will most likely like it.

Reading through these comments, am I the only one who prefers "Nightmare in Silver" over Gaiman's previous story "The Doctor's Wife"? Not to say either story was particularly good or bad, both were pretty average, but I think NiS was better.

I'm a real sucker for Cyberman stories, I absolutely love them! In particular I love 60s Cybermen stories, so anything harking back to them will probably win me over instantly. I was a tad disappointed with Nightmare in Silver though, they weren't very... Cyberman-y. The voices made it sound like they had a cold, and the I thought they were over designed for the body and that made a nicely designed head look bland. I still liked it, but not that much. I have faith in the Moff to do them justice. I may not have been too fond of Asylum of the Daleks, but he has given us some wonderful Cybercameos so it should be good!

Is this a preemptive strike against the Doctor's attempt to rectify past mistakes? Is the Doctor there to help the Second or is he there to aid the Sixth? It will cause an awful mess if he starts tripping over his own time lines. Be fun, though.

I love how the Cyberman's stance and expression translates into: 'Right then, London... again.' And it's looking toward the Millennium bridge.

For a long time fans have been wanting a great new series Cyberman story and it seems like Moffat has now taken up the gauntlet. I am so glad since he is the strongest and most consistent writer to have worked on the show, series eight is building up to be great!

The Cybermen again? Hopefully it's better than the atrocious season 7 one.

The reason I liked cybus cybermen best was because they deleted people. Haven't saw as many on-screen deletes sinces series 2 where main characters were deleted. Hopeing to see more!

My thought process:

"Today has seen the Cybermen making a very public appearance in London mimicking one of the most memorable moments from Doctor Who’s history."

I wonder what that could be. Looks at picture. Of course! Oh wait... The Invasion? I thought with the hands of hips Cyberman it was Revenge...

Oodkind IS MISSY!!!!!
Oodkind IS MISSY!!!!!

Looks like it has potential. I'm not so sure how well Moffat will do making them scary, as he historically has been better at emotionless, inanimate monsters, but if he can pull this off it could be the best cyberman story in a long while.

I loved The Invasion it's one of my favourite Troughton episodes! Can't wait to see the series finale, it certainly looks exciting.

I'm really starting to get a nostalgic feeling from this episode and I can't wait to see how it plays out. I really hope its well written because I love the new Cyberman design but I feel it represented poorly due to bad storytelling in 'Nightmare In Silver'. Hopefully this episode will be able to redeem them, we've got a good design now we just need the decent story they deserve.

This scene has been recreated a few dozen times now, why does it only matter this time? I'm certain we passed the nostalgia trip last year.

Eh, it still means Cybermen are getting SOME use. Or uhh, whatever they are.

Nice to see Doctor Who filming in London (as opposed to Cardiff pretending to be London!).

I assume the Cybermen will cross the Millennium bridge then visit the Tate Modern, perhaps stopping off for a pint and bite to eat in The Founders Arms on the way.

UNIT will be involved with this episode too, judging from Jemma Redgrave's reappearance as Kate Stewart and Ingrid Oliver as Osgood. They're practically female counterparts to the Brigadier and Benton, which adds another level of throwback to The Invasion.

I think it will be great to see the Cybermen invade London again but these days I think they will do it differently more up to date, maybe they will have a great cyberleader, and where is Clara?

the doctor might be really put to the test in this one

I dont think the pic is really spoiling  anything it does look exciting and makes me want to watch the episode to see if its as good as other Cybermen episodes

I hope this is good. The cybermen are in desperate need of a prestige boost. They have been relegated to secondary monsters since series 2.

I hope there is a good reason for mimicking it... can't really think of one at the minute but Moff usually comes up with out of the box ideas.

If it's anywhere near as good as The Invasion (and knowing Moffat, it could be), we're in for a treat.

@DrWhoBoy123 That's why some people dislike the new cybermen. They are not robots, they are medical horrors.

'The Doctor's Wife' wasn't average, it was freakin' great. And that season had a lot of crappy episodes.

@Deus_Ex_Machina I agree with you, Deus. The thing about Gaiman is that as he works more on a project, his writing gets better. He's my favorite writer but honestly, the first few issues of The Sandman were almost pedestrian. Once he wrote "The Sound of Her Wings", the whole thing fell in place, which Gaiman himself as said.

So his Who scripts get better and netter. The last one was excellent. I expect his next one to blow me away.

Deus_Ex_Machina

I must have missed that one. The only series 7 Cyberman episode I remember is "Nightmare in Silver".

Hey, if Moffat can make gasmasks, clocks, statues and libraries scary, I'm sure he'll have no issue making space robots scary.

@Oodkind He made a fairly terrifying threat out of their cameo in The Pandorica Opens.

That is a challenge though as The Invasion is phenomenally good personally, but on the other hand it is Moffat

I doubt it will be. Last time 'The Doctor' admitted that their was no way to beat the Cybermen without blowing up a planet... and even that failed. So yeah, logically unless they pull out another 'instant win' button then they shouldn't be able to defeat the Cybermen on Earth.

TheIdleIdol
TheIdleIdol

Precisely. The Cybermen were never intended to be robots. They're near-humans who have cybernetically enhanced themselves to the point of being unrecognisable, but there's a living, organic core supporting it all. That, for me, was always their appeal and their fright factor - they're what we might become, once we realise we can out-engineer our own bodies and make ourselves, stronger, faster, smarter and near-immortal. They're a metaphor for the slippery slope of technological dependence. Turn them into your run-of-the-mill robots (as, to a certain extent, they have been over the years) and they lose their very essence.

@supermoff  @Oodkind   I didn't think they were terrifying in Asylum at all. What did they actually do except almost kill the characters and do things off screen?

SonicTheHedgehogRules
SonicTheHedgehogRules

True, but it would make more sense for this to have happened LAST YEAR, during the show's 50th year. Here it just seems really, out of place...

SonicTheHedgehogRules

This must be the first time you've seen this scene outside The Invasion story itself. Even the Daleks have done this, it's crazy! :')

dalek1099dw
dalek1099dw

@MatthewBagnall that was just a really really poor ending the Daleks were the only ones left standing at the end in Time of the Doctor, so they have defeated the Cybermen yet The Doctor never needed to blow up a planet to defeat them.

I don't get how that ending was allowed it was so poor I doubt a Primary School teacher would have been happy with a pupil who wrote that, I would have made The Doctor trick the cybermen that The Cyberplanner had won over him and He would have tricked them into deactivating.

I'm not certain this will be a cyberman episode though they may just play a background role in the finale, whilst Moffat's new arc resolves.

"The Doctor's Wife" was great and that season had the usual mix of both good and bad episodes.
