Gaiman & Davis on Scary Cybermen
Writer Neil Gaiman and actor Warwick Davis have spoken about their upcoming Cybermen story in Series 7, the penultimate episode of the run.
Speaking on Australian radio station Triple J, Gaiman said: “I got an email from Steven Moffat and he said ‘would you like to make the Cybermen scary?’ and I just looked at it for 30 seconds and sent him a message back saying ‘yes.’ But you’re going to have to wait and see how i’ve made them more scary.”
Gaiman is tight-lipped on further details although he does say that the episode is nothing like his previous story, The Doctor’s Wife, and is very odd and weird. He adds that the story isn’t all about the Cybermen. They are there, but more in the background.
He also praised Warwick Davis’ guest role as Porridge: “Warwick is absolutely brilliant.”
In a separate interview with SFX, Davis said “[The Cybermen] were always scary to me. I was one of those kids who hid behind the sofa, so I know they are scary. But the Cybermen that I saw were awesome and yeah I think it’ll be scary.
“I mean, it was an exciting moment to come face-to-face with one of those dudes. Seriously, it was a great thrill. I mean, it was a great thrill to be in Doctor Who. A career ambition. But to be in an episode written by Neil and to have Cybermen in it, was for me the jackpot.
