… Knock Knock

Kate Stewart turns to greet her guest, who’s just “flown in” for a visit. A portable version of the UNIT board room is seen in the background, as is a UNIT soldier and one of Kate’s associates – actor currently unknown. Judging by Kate’s choice of technology it seems the BBC are utilising their iPad allowance tremendously with the finale looking to be the 3rd story this series to feature one of the tablets. Coincidence?! Probably.

Also returning is fan favourite Osgood, portrayed by Ingrid Oliver. Notably shaken by the Cybermen’s attempt at a “Knock Knock” joke she indulges in a puff of her inhaler. Filming pictures revealed that Osgood has extended her range of Theta Sigma inspired attire, now wearing a box tie and converse shoes.

Missy finds her way onto the UNIT aircraft and seems to disconnect some of the outer shell.

All Chaos reigns as the air lock gives way. The Doctor is seen in the far right corner breaking his “No Hugging rules” as Missy stands mysteriously unmoved by the forces of gravity. The Doctor, obviously with zero control over the situation at hand, pleads: “Clara, my Clara! I don’t think you will!”

The Cybermen aren’t the only ones who get to fly freely through the Earth’s skies this episode. However due to the lack of TARDIS and parachute it does appear the Doctor might not make such a graceful landing.

Missy stands with the Doctor in what appears to be the 3W chambers (Grave-Cells) and teases the reveal of her own identity, “You know who I am.” This implies that both the Doctor and the audience have had previous connections to Missy before and will soon find out the true nature of her relationship to the rest of the plot. Speculation on her identity has run rampant ever since Missy’s initial appearance in this series opening blockbuster, “Deep Breath”. You can read a completely speculation based article indulging a few theories by Sam Rahaman from August this year here.

“Not another ex…”

And here is where the bombshell hits. Many next time trailers this series have ended with an insanely exciting and tantalising line to keep viewers rich in anticipation for a week. “Into the Dalek” had “EXTERMINATE… DOCTOR”, “Listen” had “Out they’ll come a slithering… from underneath the bed”… but the finale’s epic hook undoubtedly trumps them all. Clara Oswald stands, once again unfazed by a Cybermen threatening her at gunpoint, amongst a trashed room where we can see scientific equipment smashed, one of the Grave-Tomb’s in the centre and in it another mysterious throne labelled with the enigmatic symbol. Also visible is the “Heaven” windows seen in the Missy scene from “The Caretaker”. In keeping his promise, Moffat makes us rethink everything we believe we know about the show in one line. He kicks us out of our comfort zone – “You think you know how Doctor Who is going to work. The bets are now off”. “I’m not Clara Oswald…. Clara Oswald has never existed!”
And there we have it! The first peek at what looks to be a totally game changing series events for Doctor Who history. Missy is about to come face to face with the Doctor, and an impossible choice is looming. This Saturday, 1 November at 8.15pm on BBC1.
