The Series 8 Title Sequence

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(34)There has been a lot of speculation about the title sequence to Series 8. Certain changes were inevitable with a new Doctor taking over, but is it more than just a name change and Matt Smith face swap?

Guest contributor Paddy O’Meara, who attended the Deep Breath premiere, provides some details.

Note: If you consider info on the title sequence a spoiler then please don’t read any further…

I absolutely hate it.  The music isn't *too* bad (I don't like it, but I don't hate it either...) But the visuals are so *NOT* Doctor who.  They are far, far too direct in their imagery.  The clock motif absolutely appalls me.  We're going BACKWARDS in TV Tropes?  Horrid, absolutely Horrid.   Far too much change for me.  I would have preferred a more delicate change.  -Just the music, or maybe 'a bit' of the visuals.  -What did the fan base say when you market tested this?

They should have chose neon visuals instead. The deep breath one. But this one is my second best choice.

You made the right choice Moffat. This WAS the best title on Youtube and you gave us a very similar version for the actual series. Thank you for reaching out to the fan's creativity. :)

Not sure I like how they changed it so drastically so soon.

im in the middle its a good a new-ish sequence obviously because its  a new doctor but I think the clocks and stuff suit capaldi :) but my favourite titles are stil SERIES 4 :P

Saw the leaked video a while ago. Thankfully barely remember much of it so its a surprise of sorts. Seeing deep breath at the cinema after all it turns out. I bet this'll look and sound amazing there!

I've seen the leaked title sequence (that's as far as I go in terms of spoilers and leaks) and the title sequence itself isn't so bad with references to time that is different and a different vortex, plus the reference to the RTD titles shown in this fanmade version (going from one vortex to another). It's the theme music I don't think I'll adjust to too easily as many have already said it is reminiscient to Dominic Glynn's theme music which I have to admit is my least favourite rendition of the theme. Yes I know it's dark and maybe suiting to Capaldi but I do like the theme tune to me a little upbeat at least like the previous ones were especially 2005-2007. It's just a shame they haven't mixed it with another classic version perhaps which I may have preferred. But I might forgive this if they bring back the middle eight in the closing credits as it was always a pivotal part of it for me a few years ago, but seems a shame to have gotten rid of it just because the BBC want to speed up their credits. It seems people are more concerned with the idea that having a theme tune with less elements of Classic Who in it than restoring the middle eight, which is a shame, but that said it won't stop me watching, no way!

I've just seen the official one on YouTube and I'll say this now: I love the way it looks, but I hate the way it sounds (apart from the bit at the beginning with the cogs, which sounded pretty amazing).

Great attitude Moffat. This is a good sign for the future of the show.

It is a brilliant sequence for a brilliant Doctor. I think this proves that the Doctor Who team is like no other in involving the fans, which is appropriate, seeing as Doctor Who is the greatest show of all time. Series 8 is gonna be the best yet, I can feel it!

I agree with Moffat, it really is the first new and original idea for a title sequence in years. What an off-the-wall idea that Billy had for it. Well done. :)

Wow, so someone's fan-made sequence was so good that Moffat actually decided to use it? That's pretty remarkable.

Well I am now looking forward to see the BBC version, but I still hope the clockwork element is toned down a lot, and there is the time vortex in it. To me, it's not a modern Doctor Who intro without the time vortex.

It is a really good one, when I first saw it I was amazed.

I think Billy is really talented good on him

Just seen the new titles on youtube and they are honestly amazing, can't wait to see them on the big screen in hd! And that music ahhh! It's sort of 2005 ft 80s, but a bit more frilly? ITS AMAZING!

I really love it, it's beautiful. I'd give that guy a job on the BBC, he's really talented

So this is the real deal now? Awesome! I really enjoy the clockwork-theme going through it and I have hoped for something like this for a long time. I'm pleased if the rendition of the theme also sounds like this, because it is closer to the Series 1-3 rendition, which is still my favourite.

I was always bothered by the TARDIS doors opening in the wrong direction in the previous sequence, so for me that is a good enough reason for a new one :D

Too bad the 7b titles didn't get the whole series, the first half changy colour thing was awful.

Anything to get rid of that insidious new theme music they brought in for Series 5.

Moffat is right about the fans, it's truly amazing what people come up with purely for their own and other people's entertainment- the title sequences you see on youtube are brilliant.

I am excited to see them but it is not true that new Doctor equals new titles.  If anything Matt is the odd one out for having two sets of his own titles as well as two new TARDIS sets.  In the classic series things changed more to do with production changes and in the new one the 9th and 10th practically the same everything.

Woah, I like it a lot! It's like a mix of the 70s and the RTD era.

Does anyone know if the new theme has the same opening as for Matt Smith, or is it going back to the original?

Nice one Billy, looking good. I have to say, I definitely think it's time for a theme change, glad they're going more electrical with it. My favourite titles have to be the 2005-2010 ones currently, but we'll see! Also, I quite liked the Seal Of Rassilon...

I love the whole concept behind this title sequence, in my opinion a lot of the fan sequences you see on the internet are so overblown with effects, explosions etc. etc. and they take away the essence of the whole idea behind the original sequence - less is always more. The overblown ones become substance over style. Which is why I much prefer this one, it's a new, original take on it - and I am so glad to see this has been given the credit it deserves by Moffat, and just shows how in touch he is with the shows fandom that he is willing to watch the work created by the fans and take inspiration for them and use them within the show itself. I really cannot wait to see this new title sequence in all it's HD glory come 23rd August, not long to go now! :D

@supermoff I didnt mind the the music for 7b, but the titles themselves i didnt like, far too much going on in them

@stargazer0118 This is the bit I noticed when the TARDIS flies out of one vortex to another similar to RTD's title sequence so glad they've incorporated that bit and the titles don't look that bad, it's the new theme music I don't think I'll like.

@TheGloamglozer You can look up a cover someone did on youtube after hearing it themselves. It sounds like nothing in the show before. Maybe like a modern version of the Peter Howell theme. Lots of high pitched whines

Or Jon Pertwee for that matter....

davidbrummy

@GermanDoctor @davidbrummy The Titles were not new for him though which was my point.  Pertwee in his last season had the titles that are most associated with Baker and he in his last season had the titles most associated with Davison.  The only Doctor in the classic season to have his own titles was the 7th however if the series had continued they may have been reused.

As for the console if we discount redresses of the basic design he was the only Doctor to have a console room never shared when they introduced the wooden console room which lasted one season due to the set warping in storage.
