Series 8: Meet Danny Pink

Samuel-Anderson-Danny-Pink-Doctor-WhoSamuel Anderson (The History Boys, Gavin & Stacey, Emmerdale) is set to join the cast of Doctor Who as a recurring character in series 8, which will also introduce Peter Capaldi as the Doctor to millions of viewers for the first time.

Anderson will play Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill School where companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) also teaches.

On joining the show Samuel Anderson said: ‘I was so excited to join Doctor Who I wanted to jump and click my heels, but I was scared I might not come down before filming started! It’s a quintessential part of British culture and I can’t believe I’m part of it. It’s an honour to be able to work alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and I can’t wait to show people how my character becomes involved with such a fantastic duo!’

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, added: ‘For the fourth time in Doctor Who history, Coal Hill School is coming to the aid of the TARDIS. In 1963 teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright accompanied the First Doctor. These days it’s the turn of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. And very soon now, Sam Anderson as Danny Pink will be entering the world of the Doctor. But how and why? Answers are coming later this year in Peter Capaldi’s first series of Doctor Who!’

Filming recently began on episode 4 of the new series which will co-star Robert Goodman (Gangs of New York, Game of Thrones) and episode 5, co-starring Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch, Groove High), and Pippa Bennett-Warner (The Smoke, Death in Paradise).

Couldn't they have picked a different colour if they were set on a colour, like 'Danny Grey' (Daniel Grey?) sounds more normal than 'Danny Pink'

Pink? That's a stupid name... Whatever.

Anyway, it will be good to see another good character. My only worry is that he will be too similar to Mickey. Clara has already been a lot like Rose in many respects, so I hope this doesn't come as a total rip-off.

Another new face, Fantastic :)

As long as he's different from Mickey and Rory it'll be fine :)

Not companion, "recurring character". The Master?

I'd love to know what kind of jacket he's wearing. It looks awesome.

If this man is any good, I would like to see him take over as the main companion.  It's about time we had a male primary companion.

You know, I can actually see him turning out to be a bad guy (you heard it here first :P) Perhaps he's a disciple of The Master or maybe The Sontarans and he's implanted as a teacher in present day on the off chance that The Doctor invites him along on his travels, and he's there to learn the "secret" of the Tardis, the secret to time travel! Would be quite cool. And have it revealed in the Premier of Series 10 or something, would be quite cool in my opinion

Sounds interesting. As long as they have a good reason for having him in the Tardis (which I doubt they do)

Interesting, Can't wait to see him in action.

Okay: previously I was against them having any sort of romantic connection, but the set photos are making it harder to not wish for that.

Great! I've always preferred TARDIS trios rather than duos; it makes for a more interesting dynamic IMO, as there's more relationships and interactions to explore. It's more interesting than having just two people- there's only so much you can do with that. I haven't seen him act in anything so I don't know what he's like, but hopefully he's good. (And yes, I know he was called a 'recurring character' so he might not be a companion, but to me it seems like they're setting him up to be one otherwise it wouldn't be an official announcement).

Still hoping that Captain Jack comes back , cos he could sort out the John Frobisher problem

Jack : (raises his gun ) what are you doing Frobisher ? You're dead

how do you know it's a companion it could just be a recuring character like the brigadier , take Stewart and Craig Owens.

@Oodkind  How do you see Clara being a lot like Rose?  They don't seem to be at all similar.

@Sam Davern  Jackie was a recurring character, did she turn out to be the Rani?

@TheCapaldiMasterplan  I think it will be more a way of demonstrating that the two companions won't have a romantic connection, by having the date end badly - just like The Moff did at the end of Flesh & Stone (controversially, for those who didn't get it) by having Amy come onto The Doctor as a way of having him outright reject that kind of relationship from the outset so we knew that wasn't going to happen. I think, much like that, the date between Clara & Danny will end badly to show they're just going to be friends, since we've already had a couple in the TARDIS recently. **** Just to clarify, that's not a spoiler, I'm speculating

@TheOncomingFish  and a 'triplet' becomes more like the dynamic of the Kirk, Spock, McCoy trio -- each being able to represent a facet of a synergetic relationship.

@LeightonWestwoo  If he were a recurring character like Craig, or the Brigadier, or even River, they wouldn't have made a formal announcement about his casting. That's what suggests that he'll be more than just a once-in-a-while character. Besides, it'd be good to finally have a properly used black male for a companion.

Oodkind is foretold...

@Rani Nose @Oodkind Not her, but the things that happen to her. There are a lot of parallels.

Just look at Time of the Doctor: the doctor sends her home, because he doesn't want her to be in danger. She clings to the outside of the tardis and comes back. She ultimately ends up saving the doctor's life, and then he regenerates.

Now look at the Parting of Ways: The doctor sends Rose home, because he doesn't want her to be in danger. She looks into the heart of the tardis, and comes back. She ultimately ends up saving the doctor's life, and then he regenerates. Sound familiar?

All through her run it has had parallels. She even lives in the same apartment!

We are just so...meh... When there's a new black companion.

We are racist like that. :P

@Chris502 @Sam DavernYeah, but did Jackie turn out to be a companion? I'm just worried that Clara and Pink (refuse to call him by his first name) will end up together. That's too predictable, Moffat can do better.

Rani Nose

@Seaborn W Deadman  You haven't seen Danny Pink yet, how can you want him to stay on after Clara leaves?  Maybe he'll turn out to be an incompetent dullard.  Maybe he'll be irritating and unlikeable.

I can imagine Jack saying that aswell , As I have turned to rewatching every episode of new who and Torchwood and will probably move to Classic Who as well .

Really want to see filming pics or see filming itself but not likely as I'm from the north west of England and most of the filming is either in wales or London

@TheCapaldiMasterplan @LeightonWestwoo  In this day and age they have to make an announcement.  Look at the timing -they were filming outside today.  Since he is going to be seen filming several more episodes outside the BBC wants to get ahead of the rumor mill.

@Rani Nose @Seaborn W Deadman  Ardic said "If this man is any good," she/he weren't jumping to conclusions, but maybe they know he is a great actor by his previous roles? sometimes you can just see by a person that they will be great,

TheCapaldiMasterplan
TheCapaldiMasterplan

@Rani Nose @TheCapaldiMasterplan @LeightonWestwoo  They didn't when Mark appeared as Brian, or Arthur back in 2009, or even Jemma as Kate. Nothing's changed in the last five years. The fact that they've made a formal announcement about him appearing in the show means his character will be significant (companion/villain) otherwise there wouldn't be a point.
