Series 8: Keeley Hawes cast as Ms Delphox

Keeley-Hawes-doctor-whoLine Of Duty’s Keeley Hawes will join the cast of Doctor Who, following rave reviews for her outstanding performance as DI Lindsay Denton in the hit BBC drama. Starring opposite the Doctor, Hawes will guest star for one episode in Peter Capaldi’s first ever series as the Time Lord.

Set to transmit in the autumn this year, Hawes will play Ms Delphox, a powerful out-of-this-world character with a dark secret. Travelling across space and time the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and his companion, Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), will come face to face with the mysterious Ms Delphox when they arrive on a strange and puzzling planet.

Written by Steve Thompson (Sherlock) the episode will be directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Line Of Duty, Doctor Who).

Commenting on her role, Keeley Hawes, said: “I am delighted to join Doctor Who and to be working with this incredible team. Ms Delphox is a great character and someone I’ve had a lot of fun playing.”

While lead writer and executive producer, Steven Moffat, added: “Anyone watching Jed Mercurio’s amazing Line Of Duty will know that Keeley Hawes is having one hell of year. And now it’s about to get even better as she achieves the greatest villainy yet attempted on Doctor Who: she plays a banker.”

Doctor Who is a BBC Wales production for BBC One. Filming is currently underway for the new series, which will introduce Peter Capaldi as the next Doctor for the first time to millions of viewers.

In a recent interview she said she is a powerful banker

Well, sadly we won't see Kate O'Mara as the Rani, she died to day.

Because this is Doctor Who she probably isn't even a banker to do with proper, ordinary money banking

Banker ... Strange and Unusual puzzling planet? Mindwarp was quite a strange unique planet with purple skies and pink seas... The planet with Sil, who was into the stock market - SHE is a banker ... Does this also mean the return of Sil?  It fits in with the Old FACES theme ... as for SHE IS THE RANI rumour, whilst I would so dearly love that to be true - Moffatt has said often enough that he was not a particular fan of the RANI - THOUGH saying that, he also said that Gallifrey was dead and gone and now we know there is a way for it to come back.so the return of the RANI AND The Master in the same series would fit in with that ... and we all know that RTD would have brought the RANI back (possibly in a SJA) so I can see that Moffatt would throw a curve ball and bring back the most obscure of Timelords.  Though for obscurity I did not even know about Omega or Great Intelligence until fairly recently yet EVEN MY NON WHOVIAN mother knew who the RANI was!  So take that Moffatt!  I support the RANI's return and KATE O'MARA has been more outspoken about returning for a regeneration scene.  So I hope she does.  I am fed up of the lack of female Gallifreyans and would love Gallifrey to come back and see more of it's culture.  That is why I loved Day of the Doctor, we saw the children - the vulnerable - so yes, I can't wait for S8 - RANI or no RANI but it would be the icing on the cake for me and I feel would make sense for the rumoured story arc.

Oh hi Madame Kizlet-Foster. Fancy seeing you here.

We've been given an image, the character name, who's playing her, and that's it. How am I supposed to react to this?

Gues star in one episode? Seems like shes will play a more important role on whatever the series arc will be though if they are pretty much promoting her character like this, never really saw a promo pic of miss kizlet did we?

I'm so surprised no one has suggested she is playing the Rani yet. Not that I think she is but just saying...

I've noticed (and a bunch of other commenters as well) that a lot of the "businessmen bad people" have very similar outfits/personalities...hopefully this'll be something new?

Well, Moffat certainly knows how to get the kids on his side - name the villain after Pokemon! My daughter hasn't watched really watched since Amy left, but this announcement got her attention.

Bankers are not necessarily evil, and I'm sure that many of them are nice people.  Why then, are they always portrayed as villains in the media?

The more I look at Series 8, it really does seem the show is changing in Capaldi's Era, I'm very intrigued and curious how the next 14 episodes are going to go.

Keeley Hawes is a fabulous actress turning in a surely Bafta winning performance in Line of Duty but, much as I like the way she looks from a lustful perspective, this does seem to be the standard evil lady costume

I hope this is more suited to Thompson. He's shown on Sherlock that he can write a good script. A brilliant one, in fact.

I wonder if she'll be like Miss Kizlet or something.  And she does look a lot like Miss Foster.  Is the outfit she's wearing the one she's gonna wear in the episode, or is it just from her previous roles?

Diana van der Pluijm

Her outfit looks a lot like Miss Foster. And Madame Kovarian. And the woman The Bells of St. John. Why? Can't they think of an original outfit to give to a possibly evil woman? And those glasses, blegh! Look, I don't know the actress, never heard of her and I'm not judging her acting abilities, especially since a few friends of mine have told me that she's a great actress. But come on... the outfit! It's like there's a mold for evil women?

A banker would be the best Doctor Who villain ever. This looks like it's going to be a more mature episode, which is good.

DI Drake! Wonder if Gene Hunt will turn up...

I remember her from the fairly erotic Tipping the Velvet, where she starred alongside Rachael Stirling (Ada in Crimson Horror)...

Well she's apparently a brilliant actress and she's playing a villain who's a banker, which seems like a very mature villain. Looks very promising....

Wow wow wow. Another fantastic actor coming to Who. This sounds amazing. I can't wait to find out what the secret is. She is a brilliant actress who will be able to go toe to toe with Peter. The more I see and hear about season 8 and the whispers behind the scenes mean that season 8 is shaping up to be the best ever. I wonder what other treasures Moff has lined up for us!

@Kylephantom4  HOPEFULLY something better then the 'metal eyepatched' woman of the Matt Smith / messing with the Pond baby stories....

@President Joe  This is the first time I've heard of that place. I just looked it up and it seems to fit in with what's been said of series 8.

@President Joe Oh. That would make for some funny scenes where she and Capaldi are moving their eyebrows and Clara is like: "What are you doing?" and Capaldi is like: "Communicating."

Red. Or dark blue. Or grey. Hair in bun. Or pony tail. Or like a BBC presenter.

The 1940s fatale look was already used by Kovarian; no need to repeat it.
