That robot reminded me of an owl, a huge one that's all.

Am i the only one who thought the sonic screwdrivers appearance was synonymous to the TARDIS interior? The reason Eccleston and Tennant had the same is because for one there was no need for change, and two the beige cracked ceramic look matched that of the TARDIS console/interior. When season 5 started, 9/10's sonic broke and the regenerated TARDIS with the copper coloured, steampunk interior created the new one. Now seeing as Smith got a new TARDIS interior (the slick futuristic one) surely the sonic should change aswell to match it? Im sure they'll give Capaldi a new one at some point so he can have his own. Just a thought.

I am not disappointed at all, just excited for the show to start back up again. I can't wait!!

Impossible! It must Just be that its the first episode and he hasn't trashed is old screwdriver yet!

people who say they're disapointed that 13th still has 12th's Sonic must have forgotten that 10 used 9th's sonic

i really dont want anything to remind me of matt smith's time as the doctor.. so im kinda dissapointed with no new sonic

Back in the old days, the sonic screwdriver didn't change much, and it wasn't used very much either, at least not a fraction as much as it is used in the new series.

The second doctor was the first to use one and it was kind of a plain metal stick, and the design of 3rd-5th Doctor's screwdriver only had very slight differences between them. It was destroyed during the 5th Doctor's tenure because John Nathan-Turner thought it was a crutch and it didn't appear again in the movie with 8th Doctor.

When I saw Capaldi in this outfit I got a Jon Pertwee vibe. It is sort of like the outfit he wore in Doctor Who and the Silurians. Capaldi's outfit certainly has a hint of the cape Pertwee wore. Could the next Series have more of a Classic vibe?

this is going to be fun if the doctor has forgotten stuff maybe he has forgotten about the sonic or only just remembered

I'm disappointed they've kept 11th's sonic but I'm thinking that if he's going to use it much less like lots of people seem to want, there'd be no point in changing it really.

Hmmm... I kinda wish they'd made a new model sonic for him, Matt's sonic just looks strange in Peter's hands....

To be honest, I'm preparing for a disappointing monster. The robots from "Dinosaurs" had everyone going "ooh... I'm very cross with you! These monsters will be great!" when the pictures leaked, but they turned out to have a minimal part in the episode. I'm hoping for some better monster use this series.

I can't say I particularly like that sonic with him, looks a bit too big and childish, but it's still fine. Perhaps he'll get a new one later in the series, though that seems unlikely, because why not just write it into the first episode if you are going to make it his own thing? It's kind of too bad. I would have liked to see a new one that matches the current TARDIS. But it's not a big deal.

i really think that the robot looks really plain and boring... and i wish they had changed the sonic, its starting to look like what happened with Tennant getting the leftovers of Eccleston

I was hoping they would ditch the Sonic for a while. I actually thought that the ring he wears might be special like the 1st Doctors but I suppose the BBC marketing department wouldn't like that

That face he makes when he holds the screwdriver in the video gives me Tom Baker vibes XD

tjperez

He typically gets a new sonic when the old one gets destroyed, and the design seems to be linked to the TARDIS "desktop theme" at the time.

Eurrghh, the power of three was rushed wasn't it, and there was that bit wasn't there, where the doctor did something you know, impossible and it was the sonic screwdrivers fault wasn't it? I really hate that bloody screwdriver foiling otherwise scientifically sound plots.

Am 99% sure i am wrong, but... That owl/robot looks to me a tiny bit like it could be Madam Vastra? I think i can see her tri-ridged head, and the rest of the gear could be some kind of night vision gizmo, and wings to help he go about her work in this story. Like i say, i am most likely wrong, but couldnt let it pass without saying... Just in case! Cheers all, enjoy the show.

Just saying, 9's sonic was different than 10's.  It was scaled smaller and lent itself to being used differently as a result.  9 would use it for finer work like a pen, where 10 brandished his like a wand.  Watch "Rose" or "The Empty Child" and you'll see the difference.   Good example of the difference can be seen here with Nine using the sonic on the Auton arm in Rose, you'll see the smaller size.

Capaldi is so much like Ten with the screwdriver in this video. Love that serious face.

NewWho2012

I don't mind him using the new sonic as long as he doesn't rely on it as much as Eleven did like scanning every little thing like he can't work it out himself. Would be nice to go back to the scanning like Ten did to track things like Capaldi's doing here which is looking promising.

It's weird see him with Matt's sonic, but I had willings of see him using the sonic. have you seen the tree photos?

CapricornCross

The screwdriver maybe the same one but will the doctor use it the same way? Peter Capaldi has got all the room and quirks to make the device his own. Cool monster too.

its still the same era of the show, a new sonic wouldn't change anything really. personally i was hoping that the absence of the sonic meant it had been written out but evidently not. it really needs to go i think because as long as its around it will be ruining stories like power of three and Rings of Akhaten. a friend pointed out to me that the sonic was the hero, not the doctor. i dont agree, but i do think its a valid point. it not writing out the sonic shows a lack of boldness from the writers. when the doctor doesnt use the sonic to escape situations like in day of the doctor or angels or waters of mars or day of the moon, and comes up with a complex intelligent plan to save the day, it makes an episode so much better. please, give the sonic a rest!

Same TARDIS and titles I want, but I was kinds hoping for a new sonic. The old one just seemed so fitted to Matt and his costume, and the current TARDIS desktop hasn't had a chance to spawn its own design yet. But it's no biggie.

Why is River Song's diary always the symbol picture for spoilers? I'm sick of her character. Please replace the image with a Judoon or something

I was hoping for a new Sonic, but the fact that it's the same Sonic isn't anything major.

Like the article said this is only episode 3. If they can change a companion halfway through a series they can do the same with the sonic. Also I think it's a nice little homage to the 11th Doctor, much like when 11 was using 10's screwdriver in TEH.

I like the idea it takes the doctor time to feel comfortable, and still have previous devices/characteristics from the previous doctor. It's like getting a job I suppose, it takes time to settle in to a new one etc...

Anyway I'm rambling, but Having said all that I do kind of do hope for a new sonic to be honest.

TARDlSkey
TARDlSkey

I for one am happy with the sonic remaining the same. It's my favourite design and I'm in no hurry for that to change really. And, just saying, 9/10's sonic was six years, this has only had three.

IanWhippie
IanWhippie

@Dalekoverlord he doesn't always get a new screwdriver when he regenerates. i hope they hang onto the current design so it doesn't completely disconnect from the past, the way 10 didn't from 9.

eksortso

@RickXeros  Peter holds it and uses it differently from Matt. That's alright by me. After all, if 9 and 10 can share a sonic, why not let 12 take 11's and make it his own? As far as the size of it goes, it makes Peter seem more powerful wielding it.

Adric the Genius
Adric the Genius

@thatscottishguy Yet Tennant made that sonic his own.  I remember that sonic as Tennant's first.  Who knows?  Maybe Capaldi will do the same, but I doubt it.

CliffSees

@Notsosmartguy  I agree. The Sonic is beginning to become a deus ex machina, like the TV Batman's utility belt.

ThomasDunn1

9s and 10s were exactly the same size, trust me. There were subtle difference such as emitter button and slider wires in the glass tube. There were also different props used with different purposes with slightly different pain jobs perhaps giving an illusion of size difference :)

@gunslinger19  If ever there were a story that the sonic's use made perfect sense in, it was "The Rings of Akhaten". The whole culture was sound-based. They had acoustic locks on the doors to the temple, and the Vigil used sonic blasts which the sonic should naturally be able to counter.

awkward912
awkward912

@gunslinger19 The Sonic's a scapegoat. The Power of Three especially had a rushed ending, and would have had one whether utilised through the sonic or some handy nearby levers. Don't diss the sonic.

TheFirstMaster

@awkward912  I think you're definitely getting the same TARDIS, they're not throwing out the £1 M interior after just one year.

CliffSees

@NOT THE Doctor  The Judoon were the coolest-looking bad guys! And I love the sound of their language. As I said above, the Sonic is becoming the go-to method for getting out of jams, to the point of ridiculousness. It's as of the writers had lost their imagination.

@NOT THE Doctor  I think you've answered your own question. River's known for her "spoilers" phrase, and as these articles have spoilers...
