Series 8: Deep Breath First Look

Entertainment Weekly have a first look image from the opening episode of Series 8, Deep Breath. As we can see, the 12th Doctor obviously hasn’t finalised his costume!

UPDATE: Moffat told EW: “It’s a big introduction—he’s the new Doctor. There’s no point pretending that it’s not the most interesting, dynamic thing that you’ve got to sell in that first episode. It’s going to be about ‘What’s he like? How’s he different?’ I suppose it feels a bit like a character piece, but there’s plenty of action and nonsense and jeopardy, as there ever is in Doctor Who.”

While the showrunner is being tightlipped about Who’s 12-episode season, we do know it will culminate in a two-part finale directed by Rachel Talalay (Tank Girl) featuring the Doctor’s frequently encountered foes the Cybermen. Both the 50th-anniversary special and the Christmas episode left some fans a bit teary-eyed—so how will folks feel by the end of this run? “Like they want Doctor Who to come back very, very quickly,” says Moffat with a chuckle.

Step back in time...

I've watched a lot of Who in my time, and I think that Matt Smith is probably my favourite Doctor (With Tom Baker a close second, and the other 9 a close joint third). But ... Is anyone else feeling like Capaldi has the potential to steal the top spot? Based solely on his other work, his tiny spot in Time, and promotional images, I think he could be an incredible Doctor. #allhailcapaldi

This comment originally contained a spoiler, but now my account has been banned because I was stupid enough to post it here.

Clara looks very much like Clara Oswin Oswald :) might elaborate a bit more this series about her splinters :)

Big cliffhanger at the end of the series? Almost definitely.

Perhaps this means that it will come back "very very quickly..." ???

I'm glad it'll be focusing more on Capaldi as the new Doctor and not on Clara like they did with The Christmas Invasion. It was mostly about Rose coming to grips with the new Doctor rather than having the new Doctor coming to grips with his new self.

@deleted_31247867_deleted_31247867_RhonDOH is getti An officially released picture sanctioned by the BBC is not a spoiler.

EDIT: The user has deleted their own account. Here's their original message: "Would this photo not qualify as a spoiler in some way? Lord knows we've been lectured about it right and left the last few days. Even disabled commenting. Now they drop this in? Forgive me, but that impresses me as somewhat hypocritical. Not trying to be mean; just sayin'."

The series will likely end on 15th November, so only a month and 10 days from Christmas.

@Benjamin Bradley Well yes, Christmas will be less than 6 weeks after the final episode, assuming each episode will be shown on a weekly basis from 23rd August

@Gustaff   The Christmas Invasion was about letting people see how helpless they were with the doctor being incapacitated in order to build suspense and anticipation..... so you are that much more thrilled when he finally showed up. I thought it was pretty well done, though I think they dragged it out a bit too long. It was a terrific introduction to the new Doctor.

I love The Christmas Invasion as much as the next man (I'm currently sitting next to a Sycorax stroking a Christmas tree), but as an introduction for Tennant, it was rather poor.

I'm waiting for a full body photo for my habitual drooling over Clara's costume

I'd love a Three-Jo dynamic, they're lovely together.

@TheElusiveWhovian I don't consider TCI a bad story, I just think that one of the things that drags it down is the lack of focus on the Doctor. You have your main character sleep for 3/4 of the story.

Plus TCI is basically just Castrovalva: The Christmas Edition

PS: I do like Castrovalva. Good story for me

Gustaff

@Planet of the Deaf @Gustaff True, but if you look at Invasion that was about an hour, the sitch with Rose dominated the story for 3/4 of it. I don't want that happening here. Actually: Doctor 3/4, Clara .5/4 and Gang .5/4

The Eleventh Hour managed to balance it well. Hoping for that!

A spoiler is something that gives crucial details from an unreleased project away. By your logic, any teasers or promo images are spoilers. Which, frankly, is pretty silly.

TardisBoy

Except this is a promotional image sanctioned by the BBC itself. Not a spoiler.

I do love Castrovalva over The Christmas Invasion. Above all for the bit of Peter Davison posing as past Doctors

Ottoman14

@Gustaff @Planet of the Deaf There was no balancing in Eleventh Hour? The only returning character was the Doctor. It was 100% about the Doctor rediscovering himself.

@TardisBoyBut if it was a BBC-itself-sanctioned statement that, for example, Tom Baker wa going to reappear in the 50th, or all past Doctors were going to fearture in TNOTD, would it not still be a spoiler?

Gustaff
Gustaff

@Creepy_Ghoul @Gustaff @Planet of the Deaf I mention TEH, but I don't want to raise my expectations unfairly high. Rather expect a average episode and be blown away by an awesome one than expect TEH v2.0 and be disappointed it didn't live up to your expectations.

@Lemonhead118 @Creepy_Ghoul @Planet of the Deaf @Gustaff Can you explain to me what it will actually change onscreen? Like, are the images going to go slower than a regular episode? I remember the big deal that was made because The Hobbit was broadcast with 60fps if I remember correctly, but I don't think it altered the lenght of the movie? Basically I'm confused about the actual difference between 24fps and 25 ^^

TardisBoy

If the BBC spoiled Tom Bakers appearance then they'd be pretty stupid to do so, which is why they didn't.

TardisBoy
TardisBoy

If you're THAT worried about spoilers perhaps you should just stop looking at DW sites then so you don't come across any. Furthermore in what way does this picture in any way spoil any part of the episode?

ilyootha
ilyootha

@Zakk WilliamsYes, but suppose they did, people would claim "it's not a spoiler!" simply because it's the BBC who announced that.

Gustaff
Gustaff

@Creepy_Ghoul @Gustaff @Planet of the Deaf Right now, I'm keeping busy with other stuff and trying not
to think about Deep breath. I am expecting a Smith and Jones level of intro. That means if it turns into TEH v2.0, I'll be on cloud9

TardisBoy

There have been times when the BBC have released spoilery images i.e Tasha Lem as a Dalek puppet, but DWTV has put them under a spoiler tag as they felt it spoiled a part of the episode. The above image is quite clearly NOT a spoiler and so DWTV published the image with no hassle.

DWTV
DWTV moderator

If the BBC don't consider something a spoiler, DWTV site policy is that we generally follow suit. However, there have been occasions where we have personally disagreed with the BBC and added a spoiler warning. Not here though.

Liana21

It's not spoilery, it's just a photo

TARDlSkey

Really? What time period? You tell me exactly based on what's in the image itself. What date is that? You could say anything from the 14th to the early 19th century, but it's a time travel show so going back I time is hardly groundbreaking.

You're honestly just picking for the sake of it :/

RhonDOH is getting Six Seasons and a Movie!! wrote: "Tells you what time period they're in. Look, I can see the flaming torches and pitchforks lining up at my door, so here's why I made the original comment; I am NOT "anti-spoiler," in fact, I've checked out tons of them myself. It's fun! But then, someone out there leaked scripts (which I still haven't seen), and the next thing you know, DWTV prevents us all from commenting. All, as they said, to avoid spoilers. Well, I say, "all or nothing." If you don't want people to drop spoilers, don't post images of future episodes yourself. To me, it doesn't matter if this was officially sanctioned by the BBC. I don't have a problem with the picture, per se. The problem is that we were all essentially banned from commenting because of spoilers, so I think it's a case of "what's good for the goose..." Either accept that spoilers are going to float around out there, and one needs to find the personal discipline to avoid them, or indulge in them, if you wish. But don't ban an entire fanbase if you're doing the same thing you're accusing them of!

I find it hypocritical, that's all. Y'all can go on and hate me if you want to. That's my opinion. It's not a law, it's not a fact, it's my opinion. Sorry.

Now, let me go find some friggin' burn ointment. :-/"

Oh wow, yes it reveals the time period, I mean it's not like it was previously announced already that the episode was going to be set in the Victorian Period, and of course this now means that the whole episode is ruined! What ever are we going to do now! Now onto your second point, let's look at DWTV's reaction to the spoilers shall we: "In light of this, Doctor Who TV is temporarily removing public commenting while we consider the best course of action for the site to ensure it remains spoiler-free until launch." And they did temporarily close the comments, because they needed to decide how they were going to tackle this horrible situation. It's not an easy decision to make, but it's certainly a commendable one! Now after a while DWTV started opening the comments again on articles that are not related in any way to Series 8, feature articles to be exact, because it would be such a shame for those people who spent their time writing such brilliant pieces of work, to go without the fanbases reaction to them. They decided that they would keep the comments closed on the articles that might cause people to start posting spoilers willy nilly, as that would be unfair on the readers who just came to have a look at the article. All the decisons DWTV has made have been made because he thinks exactly the same way you do, it's unfair to completely close the comments sections altogether because he understands that it would be shutting the community away completely. So he made a COMPROMISE, that would be beneficial for all those involved. Obviously as this picture doesn't spoil anything DWTV thought it'd unfair to not let us comment on the promotional image, and instead posted a kind reminder below not to post any spoilers that have been leaked in the comments. Honestly this whole rant is just very petty and completely unnecessary, DWTV isn't banning the entire fanbase, all of his actions so far show that he is doing the exact opposite. I think you will need that burn ointment afterall.

@DWTVFair enough. I like a bit of a spoiler myself, and I too don't think that this particular image is a spoiler, but I believe that even information from official representatives (like BBC) may spoil one's enjoyment sometimes. There have been some sad experiences in the past.
