Moffat Teases Massive Series 9 Cliffhanger

Steven_Moffat-pSteven Moffat has promised there will be “whopper” of a cliffhanger towards the end of the “next series”, one that he doesn’t think fans will see coming.

In the latest issue of DWM (#475) Moffat is asked how far in advance he plans, he replies: “One season at a time, largely. I suppose, I had a fair amount of Trenzalore worked out (the Doctor trapped in a war for a thousand years) when I wrote The Eleventh Hour, but that’s really the exception.”

And the key part: “Sitting here, right now, just before the finale shooting block, I’ve figured out the cliffhanger to the penultimate episode of the next series. And it’s a whopper. Ohh, I don’t think you’ll see this coming!”

Step back in time...

I like the idea that I've seen below that this could lead into a New Who 10th anniversary special episode of sorts for the finale/for Christmas.  Maybe he's finally managed to talk Eccleston into something after Chris saw how wanted he was in the 50th, or maybe it would be a true surprise regeneration, which I think, pulled off right, would be spectacular..  Hey, a man can dream...

Took a couple of days to sink in, but this is the first definite confirmation that Steven will be running series 9. Will this be his last big cliffhanger??

Fair to say that this upcoming cliffhanger will have tough competition as new who have got so many brilliant cliffhangers such as John is the Doctor, the regeneration in the stolen earth, the pandorica opens one and  the army of ghosts one

After returning home after a trip with the Doctor, Clara falls ill with some sort of space illness. Her father, who by then knows about the Doctor, is beside himself as he visits her in the hospital. He gets angry at the Doctor for putting Clara in danger. Clara wakes up long enough to let her father know that she travelled willingly with the Doctor and her illness isn't his fault. Her father breaks down and confesses that they adopted Clara and that the woman at the adoption agency gave them a box with a warning that it wasn't to be opened until "you have no other choice". He opens the box and inside are a leaf, a book of travels, and a fob watch.

Moffat has mastered the art of trolling. What else is new?

Personally, I love the craziness, unexpected moments and twist and turns Moffat brings to the series. Really looking forward to see what he's cooking up next. Will miss him when he leaves if I'm honest :)

If Moffatt writes the cliff hanger for S9, would he not be there to resolve it in S10?

There were times when I heard the word cliffhanger and thought "Nah, it probably won't be any big deal". But after last year  I'm really inclined to believe the Moff now. When he says it's going to be great and unexpected we're in for a treat.

The biggest news here is that Moffat seemingly confirms he's doing Series 9.

@awkward912 Good point.  I figure he sees Capaldi through and then bows out, two Doctors seems like an appropriate tenure.  I wouldn't mind if he left before then - and I LOVE Moffat's work as a whole, but change in tone like during Tom Baker's run could be interesting - but I doubt it.  And considering the average tenure + Peter's age - it's a taxing role - I figure he does 3-4 years and then calls it quits.  Probably Series 10, maybe Series 11.

That's fine as far as I'm concerned. None of the other writers are yet strong candidates for being a showrunner. Gatiss is a good guess but I think Toby Withouse's episodes are better compared to Gatiss'.

@GavinShepherd  That's already been confirmed. Mark Gatiss has said all the "guest" writers were told their scripts were being split between this series and the next and they wouldn't know when their episodes would be produced (he's got two scripts, one definitely in 2014 and filmed, the other could be 2014 or next year).

He says penultimate episode. That's the second last episode. So the cliffhanger between each part of the finale two parter.

@Malohkeh @TheOncomingStorm @Amy's on the Mofflex Diet No even objectively. It is true the show has never been more popular, but Moffat's writing systematically rewards new viewers, with storylines increasingly flashy and game-changing, while chronic inconsistencies and fatigue of his hyperbolic style are often problematic to the returning viewer. There will be a point where Who's viewership will be out of growing space, and start to stabilize after exploding, and if Moffat is still at the helm then, he will have trouble keeping these audience figures up.
