Meet the New Rani

Siobhan-Redmond-Rani

No this isn’t a joke post! Big Finish have announced that Siobhan Redmond has been cast as the new Rani in a new audio drama.

Full details from Big Finish:

The Rani, the Time Lord villain created by Pip and Jane Baker in the 1980s, is to make her first appearance on audio in Doctor Who: The Rani Elite, out in December.

She will be reunited with the Sixth Doctor and Peri, in a story set written by Justin Richards and set in a galactic university.

The character has had three appearances on television in Mark of the Rani (1985), Time and the Rani (1987) and Dimensions in Time (1993), each time played by the late Kate O’Mara.

“The Rani’s return was very much prompted by Kate,” says producer David Richardson. “Her agent contacted me and said that she would love to reprise the role with us, and when I mentioned this to executive producer Nicholas Briggs and script editor Alan Barnes they leapt at the opportunity.

“Justin wrote The Rani Elite for us, and we were just a few weeks away from recording when the terrible news reached us that Kate had passed away. At first, we were not sure what to do – until Kate’s agent again got in touch again, and said that it had been Kate’s wish that we proceed with a new incarnation of the Rani.”

In her latest body the Rani is played by Siobhan Redmond, whose many leading television credits include Between the Lines, The High Life, The Smoking Room, Taggart and Holby City.

“We’d worked with Siobhan a few months ago as a different character in Revenge of the Swarm,” continues David, “and we fell in love with her. She’s a smart, delightful person and also an amazing actress – she’s the perfect choice for this new, slightly different version of the Rani.”

The Rani Elite is available to pre-order now, and can be purchased as part of the main range subscription package.

I'm glad the Rani can live on in another form. Just a shame we won't have Kate O'Mara doing a regeneration. Again, we lost an icon of Doctor Who too soon.

I was so sure this was a joke. Especially after the funny talk we had here a few days ago which resulted in a lot of people not being the Rani.

...it's a good thing I read the description first XD

I saw the picture and the title...and then I saw that it was Big Finish, which is just as good really. :P

The real question for Big Finish fans is whether Ms. Redmond will pastiche the Mara version, or do a completely original one (i.e. a regenerated Rani). The press release seems to indicate the latter, but you never know.

Oh, and for those calling for Ms. Redmond to appear on the actual series, I personally have no problem with that, but I do NOT want to see a regeneration sequence for her. Finding appropriate footage of Ms. Mara for use in such a sequence is going to be time-consuming for post-production, and it's almost always better to show new versions of a character in medias res, so to speak.

Wicked! Maybe I should double-check my decision on whether or not to keep ordering Big Finish Audios...

Must. Get. Up to. Date. On. Monthly. Range. In. Time. I've only just finished "The Reaping", so I have a long way to go, but at the rate I'm getting through them, I might actually be up to this one by the time it comes around.

I've not heard of this actress (mainly because the only British actors I ever know are the ones who have been in Doctor Who), but she certainly looks the part. Here's hoping for a team up between her and Alex MacQueen's audio exclusive Master. Chuck Graeme Garden's Monk in from the Eighth Doctor Adventures and we could have quite a story on our hands. Hm... Perhaps I should shoot Big Finish an email...

Surprisingly enough (I say this as someone who's been disliking the Main Range as of late), every release in the rest of the 2014 lineup (Breaking Bubbles, the Seventh/Ace/Hex trilogy, and the Peri/Six trilogy) all look set to be cracking stories. I'm just glad that we're getting the Rani at last; maybe a Fourth Doctor Adventure is in order?

She looks great! Hope that she can appear in the main show too :D

Hopefully Moffat's claims that the Rani is too unknown to appear in the main show can be proven false.

That was evil Doctor Who TV! I thought this was for the television show until I read on. Now I'm sad.

I had a feeling that the Rani was about to come to Big Finish. It's such a shame it wasn't Kate O'Mara taking the role as was first intended.

Pleased to see news from Big Finish published here!

I'm not familiar with this actress, but I'm sure she'll be great. I wonder where does her incarnation fit into the Rani's timeline. The Sixth Doctor meeting her means that she and the Doctor also don't necessary meet each other in a straight order, which makes a scene fromTime and the Rani (where the Doctor works out that the security code is both his and the Rani's age) a bit weird... Oh yeah, I forgot, "the Doctor lies" and "can't remember his age".

The Rani is a character that the Moff has very wrong in my view (not saying I know better or trying to start a argument) - people DO know who this character is, and she is one of my fave bad guys from Doctor Who. When the Rani first appeared, I was only two. So here's hoping for a brilliant new incarnation that can hopefully make it back to TV one day.

Fantastic actress! I'd actually be keen on seeing her play the Rani on screen too...

Interesting Fact: She played identical twins (one of which was Capaldi's wife) in the first story of Sea of Souls!

This has made my day :) I am glad it gives possibilities to a TV Appearance. Can't wait for The Rani Elite. Got to admit, at first I thought this was a Series 8 finale bit...Ahh well :P

How funny that DWTV opened with 'it's not a joke guys'. Given all the Rani jokes and jabs, it's really funny reading a post open with that bit.

When Big Finish made an announcement that an old foe of Six would come back later this year, I was so certain it would be the Rani, but after Kate's passing, I suspected that they either cancelled the project or that I was wrong. I was right AND wrong! How fantastic? I can't wait to listen to her performance. It'll be stellar I'm sure.

Redmond does kinda look like a Rani. Even has the ginger hair!

Nice, perhaps Steven Moffat or whoever is taking over in future times will fall in love with her, too? If she has survived the time war, she has probably the will to leave the pocket universe like only the Master could.

This is absolutely excellent news! I was quite fearful after Kate O'Mara's tragic passing away, that the character of The Rani wouldn't ever return in any form of media. I'm so glad Big Finish have been able to resurrect the character.

Hey, maybe she could do the role in the TV series! It would give a level of consistsncy!

Great news, even though I properly won't buy it yet - I rely on sales to buy Big Finish audio books. I do wonder where she fits into the Rani's timeline though; O'Mara's appearance would have been easy, but this now means that the Rani's and the Doctor's timelines are out-of-sync

Justin Richards - Big Finish - The Rani - Colin Baker - Peri  -- HOW AMAZING DOES THIS SOUND!?!?!?! RIP Kate- you will be greatly missed! Good Luck Sibohan! Can't wait to see how you play the part!

@VictorWong1 I just hope she plays the part in her native accent! Would be great to hear a verbal stand-off between her and the 7th Doctor if she does...!

O'Mara, not Mara! I thought you were referring to a certain snaky thing, and I couldn't quite place the link.

Ausir

@VictorWong1 Given that they have a photo of Siobhan Redmond in-character as the Rani accompanying the announcement, I'm pretty sure she is meant to be a new regeneration.

Creepy_Ghoul

@supermoff Yes. And that they make some clever use of Archive Footage to have Kate O'Mara turn into her.

@MerieliaZ I'm pretty sure this is going to be one of this year's best selling audios for Big Finish.

Ausir

@ilyootha Well, there's already precedent for the Doctor meeting other Time Lords out of sequence - the Alex MacQueen Doctor is post-TVM, but met the Seventh Doctor in UNIT: Dominion.

Ausir
Ausir

@Sharaz_Jek Well, the Master has also met the Doctor out of sequence on audio.

VictorWong1

@Captain Braxton Now there's a thought. I wonder if the producers might give some thought about getting Kate Mara (aka Zoe Barnes from House of Cards) to play the Rani?

Sharaz_Jek
Sharaz_Jek

@A Friend of the Ood @Sharaz_Jek I don't have a problem with it, I just hope they'll explain her background and not keep the audience hanging like they did with the MacQueen Master when he appeared in UNIT Dominion, before they settled on a placement with Dark Eyes 2

The Finn
The Finn

@Gustaff @Deus_Ex_Machina Or rather it will, but the site says it hasn't. Plus I've gathered rather a backlog of unlistened audios due to doing my Master's Thesis and stuff like that.
