Jenna Coleman Leaving at Christmas?

jenna-coleman-s8-ewThe Mirror is claiming Jenna Coleman will leave the show in this year’s Christmas special.

The story states:

The actress, 28, is believed to be quitting her role as the Time Lord’s assistant in a sensational Christmas storyline.

Her exit could bring an end to her 18 months as Clara Oswald, creating a vacancy for another sidekick to star alongside new Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi.

Yesterday a source said: “The conversations about Jenna’s exit have started, and a plan is in place which is being ironed out.

“By the time she leaves she will be one of the longest-standing companions ever. She has been absolutely brilliant in the role, but everyone agrees it is a part that should change after a period.”

The source added: “It was very much a mutual decision.

“It’s important to keep the series moving and fast-paced, and the time is just starting to feel right and the feeling is that it could be a perfect Christmas storyline.”

The BBC refused to comment on Jenna-Louise’s exit.

Given the source, take with a liberal dose of salt until we hear official word.

UPDATE: From the Radio Times:

A BBC spokeswoman refused to comment: “It’s speculation at this time. People will have to watch the series to see if she’s coming back or not.”

Asked whether BBC bosses knew that Coleman was leaving at the end of the series or during the Christmas special – or whether a decision was yet to be made – the spokeswoman declined to comment.

“We want to focus on the upcoming series,” she said.

I hope this is untrue. It's too soon.

I'd like a return to how, in the classic series, the new companion was often introduced in the same story that the current one left in.

Looking at the series guide in the Radio Times it does look like we're headed for a Clara goodbye at some point this year - But if that is the case, the guide is full of signs that we're gonna get some good character development for her before that happens

I'm glad we don't know whether it is true yet.

I wish some things were kept secret for longer.

It'd be nice to watch the new series without second-guessing character and/or plot developments based on the real lives of the actors.

I suppose were all going to have to worry and wait for the news :)

"One of the longest-standing companions"? She'll have done a season and a half. That doesn't seem notably long to me. Even if you just go by New Who, it's only a little above average. I was hoping she'd stay for another series. That she isn't makes me concerned that perhaps the chemistry just isn't there between the two leads.

I'm glad the BBC said that. I'd like an exit to be a surprise for once. When we know which episode a companion is leaving, we just watch and wonder, "is she going to die or just leave?" That takes out the surprise.

Something doesn't add up, they are up to something. The fact that this news broke while the world tour is still going doesn't make much sense to me. The way they are teasing it right now reminds me of series 2 episode 3 of sherlock, not saying anything until literally they announced series 3 after the episode ended.

That's basically saying, 'yes she's leaving but there is still  a whole series full of Jenna, enjoy it!'

I wouldn't be surprised if the leak has actually come from the BBC itself, to put people on edge and like the spokeswoman said to get people to watch. If that's true then it's kind of genius

This is wild. Don't forget that we have seen less than half of her episodes. I will enjoy those and deal with the possibly of her leaving later. There are many possibilities for Clara. From what I've read, this will not be the Clara we know.  Season 8 first, then worry.

I'm glad,she deserves better.

That statement has severely lowered my hopes that she is staying.

I think they're right, it's best to see what happens to Clara during this series and see whether it gives any clues to whether she will depart or not (hopefully not).

That's a pretty diplomatic answer from the Beeb. Definitely not a denial- so either it's a ruse to get us all to watch (as if we wouldn't!) , a way of getting attention back onto the arrival of a new Doctor rather than a departure of a companion- or someone has just busted a surprise storyline and the BBC want to keep it low key...

I love that the BBC can just say "wait and see!" now. Reading "The Writer's Tale" with RTD and Benjamin Cook, it became very clear that the BBC couldn't do that in the past. How times change. Lovely, of course. Keep everything a secret! Or at least keep it a secret for as long as possible.

I hope she stays on but looking at the way they have phrased the comment in the radio times would imply that she is leaving at Christmas

Well, we'll just have to wait and see. Hopefully she stays on for at least  Series 9, preferably longer.

Watch the series and see if she's coming back or not....quite intriguing, in a sort of weird and fearful way.

Until a certain point I think that the message is a posh way to say 'c'mon dudes, seriously? Series 8 haven't started yet, take it easy, grab a drink and jelly babies and chill. We'll talk about Series 9 when it's its turn'

But, for another, I can't avoid to think if it's a "Look at other side and pretend they haven't catched you" technique for the BBC, trying to get us down meanwhile look for a way to announce it without it looks like they announce it because they've been catched.

Personally, I believe the non answer is because there will be a separate statement later on, which won't distract from this tour which is purely for S8.

Imagine if before S4, the BBC had said that Catherine Tate would only do one series, it would rather distract from her introduction.

The BBC I'm sure know exactly whether Peter and Jenna will stay for S9, but won't announce it yet. there's no way we would lose a Doctor or Companion without prior notice. IF Jenna does leave at Christmas, then there will be the publicity campaign, appearances on Graham Norton etc

Undiscovered Adventure
Undiscovered Adventure

You know I'm becoming increasingly convinced that neither has signed on, and that their decision will be influenced in part by how well Peter and Jenna are received. If that is indeed the case, we'd better make sure they know we want both of them to stay!

TheAmazingSkyFaller™
TheAmazingSkyFaller™

Plus with Capaldi; I have no worries about him not being in series 9. The man is a die-hard fan. He's only done one series and seems to enjoy it. It would be a waste to see him go after 1 series. Perhaps he's waiting to see how the public think of his Doctor, before signing on?

TheAmazingSkyFaller™
TheAmazingSkyFaller™

“It’s speculation at this time. People will have to watch the series to see if she’s coming back or not.”- seems like the BBC are still in negotiations with her, and she hasn't signed on for series 9 because of this. Same with Capaldi.

I'm getting nervous by the sort of language the BBC are using. It sounds as if they can't deny it so are avoiding the question.

Hopefully it's just that Coleman hasn't signed up for Series 9 yet so they just don't know yet

Undiscovered Adventure

It's very intriguing that we have to "watch and see" for both Peter and Jenna to see if they return, it could really mean anything. Maybe we learn something over the course of the Series, maybe she is leaving and they're giving us a non-answer, or it could simply be (as people have said) that neither have signed on yet. Regardless, though it's frustrating it is an effective way to divert the attention back to Series 8, which is where it should be at the moment.

TARDlSkey

Sounds very 'yes'. Then again they love these sorts of rumours because it helps promotion. So... you never know.

But I'd say it's certainly leading to her leaving. Sadly.

TardisBoy
TardisBoy

Okay the fact that the BBC now have refused to comment on it worries me, because if it wasn't true they're normally quick to brand the reports as lies, and they themselves not allowed to lie about reports and say she's not leaving, when she is, because of BBC policy which RTD mentioned in the Writer's Tale. So just saying "watch and find out" does seem like a clever tactic to avoid answering the question, when in fact, she is. However, there's a few reasons why they could be keeping quiet, and I'm wondering if perhaps Jenna hasn't actually signed up for Series 9 yet, this is why the BBC refuse to comment, and why the Mirror wrote this article, because they got wind of this fact. Perhaps what Capaldi said is true, he's not signed on yet and Jenna doesn't want to sign on until she knows if he is coming back. Thoughts?

They tend to count how long someone stays in the number of years not seasons.

@NumberNine personally I'm hoping she'll leave before she dies, not every companion adventure has to end in death. If there's any companion I feel deserves some what of a "happy ending" it's Clara especially after all she's done for the Doctor.

stargazer0118

@NumberNine I think I'd like her to leave in the last episode. Maybe dying saving the Doctor again.. It'd be nice to have the new companion in the Christmas episode.

@Undiscovered Adventure With all due respect rumours about the tenure of a TV show cast member should not move one to violent fantasies.  In the big scheme of things the casting of a TV show, especially one in which the leads famously come and go, is not a big deal.  If this is upsetting you so much you might want to avoid the Mirror and do something more positive with your time.

Rani Nose

We haven't seen how they act together. What if the show becomes a terrible chore to watch because there is no chemistry between the leads?

@TardisBoyI don't think that Jenna and the BBC are still undecided on whether she is staying for Series 9 or not. I imagine such things are thought through and signed long in advance, as the script of the soon-to-be-filmed Christmas special must be already written (and what's written in it may greatly depend on whether Jenna is leaving in it or not!), and I guess scripts for the next series are in progress now.

I guess the BBC already know the answer, but refuse to give it simply because they want all the attention to be attracted to the world tour and Series 8 premiere. Perhaps during or after the series airs they'll make an official statement and then we'll know the answer, but until then we'll just have to wait and see.

Planet of the Deaf

@TardisBoy I suspect (sadly) that Jenna will leave, and Peter will have a new Companion in S9. Moff plans long term, I'm sure he and Jenna have worked out a timescale for Clara, which would have included a likely departure time.

Indeed, part of the problem now is that the programme is now really high profile and successful. Karen has been incredibly successful since leaving the show, and someone as talented (and beautiful) as Jenna will have no problem getting work...

Undiscovered Adventure

What I find reassuring is that they've been just as cryptic regarding Peter Capaldi's return, so maybe they are still negotiating.

@TardisBoy I just don't think anyone has signed on yet at all, and so they have no substance to comment on it

chrisew

@BenPearson I guess when I think long-term, I think Jamie, Jo, Sarah Jane, Tegan, Amy... the handful that stayed about three seasons.1 1/2 to 2 seasons puts Clara right at the average amount they stay.

@Rani Nose @Undiscovered Adventure The original comment was: "Doctor Who: Jenna-Louise Coleman to be replaced by Rose Leslie say bookies" RIGHT! *loads gun* I have had it UP TO HERE with the Mirror! Honestly.

In hindsight that was a very stupid thing to write, but it was meant with humorous intent. I can assure you that in no way was it a "violent fantasy".

Undiscovered Adventure

I'm very sorry, I was only joking around, of course you're absolutley right. I didn't in any way mean that to come across like it did.

Apologies for coming across as immature there, my intention was as a joke at the Mirror's constant milking of headlines. As sad as I am to see Jenna leave, it really doesn't matter at the end of the day, I'm well aware of that. However, I'll admit I've been rather negative

Undiscovered Adventure

Perhaps the wider audience response is what they're watching, i.e. the general public.

TardisBoy

I just don't want ONE series with Capaldi and Jenna's partnership, if indeed it does turn out to be amazing and one of the best Doctor/companion duos we've had. It'll be like Matt/Jenna all over again and such a shame to see let go so soon.

TardisBoy
TardisBoy

I think that is definitely the case, they may be holding out to see the full reaction to the episode, to see fan reactions to their partnership and characters as a whole, before signing on. It's a smart move if it's the case.

We'd better give them a wave of praise then! which I'm sure they will more than deserve!
