Capaldi & Coleman Back For 2014 Christmas Special

2014-world-tour-capaldi-coleman-moffatSteven Moffat has said that both Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman will be back for the 2014 Christmas special, with filming beginning after the World Tour.

Speaking on BBC Radio Wales earlier today Moffat said: “Peter and Jenna only wrapped on the show yesterday.”

He then adds: “We’re not letting them off the hook because they’re going to be doing the two premieres today, then they’re going off on the World Tour, then they’re coming back to shoot Christmas.

“There’s no let-up, not when you’re on this show!”

Step back in time...

That'll make Clara the first companion to make it to three Christmases !! (Possibly ever...)

So that means Clara won't leave at the series final. Cool :)

I hope Peter sticks at it for 4 years at least. If he left after 1 series i would be devastated

As Angie said below, it's possible that it's another version of Clara in the Christmas special, and that the first one died. I think that would be a very touching ending for her, actually. She dies in the Finale, The Doctor is sad, and then meets one last echo to save him one last time. At the end of the story, that one dies, ending Clara's arc.

Or else, she is simply staying. I wasn't the biggest Clara fan in Series 7, but it sounds like she will have a much more real character in Series 8, so I'll wait to see her before I pass judgement on whether or not she needs to go. This all but confirms Capaldi for Series 9 too, so that's exciting.

OK, my first reaction: Great Jenna doesn't leave at the end of series 8!!!

Later: Oh, I hope she won't leave at Christmas, I don't want to go through another sad Christmas. Last year, it was my favourite Doctor. Now I really hope it won't be my fabourite companion.

I'm being optimistic about this though. They have to announce Jenna is in series 9 soon.

I'm surprised no one has pointed out Clara COULD die in the finale, and Capaldi just meets another Clara at Christmas. Not that I would want that, but just try to tell Moffat is not capable of that :P

Well there is a spoiler. Here is me thinking the Cybermen would kill her off but it seems like not so much...I mean unless The Cybermen get another solo Christmas Special...

I hope they keep Peter on for at least three series.

Yes!! This means Clara won't die in Series 8!! Please don't have her die in Series 9, though. There's also no mention of Danny appearing in the Xmas special. Hmm... I hope it's because it's nowhere near Christmas yet and not because he dies.

Blimey, that's quite a large workload for Peter and Jenna. Let's hope they can cope with all the Who madness! =')

Yes! More Capaldi. It's weird that even though I haven't even seen him properly on screen yet, I wnat him to stay for ages.

YES! And to those saying she needs to improve, we have not even scratched the surface of Clara's potential. The more time we have with her the better, believe me there is every indication that Moffat is going to deliver with her character, whatever you think of her at the moment.

I am so glad neither are leaving yet and hope they will continue to be part of the show into series nine and beyond. Clara is a great companion, played brilliantly by Jenna Coleman.

This is great news! I love clara, despite all the harsh comments she gets. And it's good to know capaldi will be staying for Christmas because there was a silly rumour going round that he was leaving at the end of series 8.

I'm both surprised and happy that Jenna's staying on for at least until the 2014 Christmas Special. Man, this will have been her third Christmas Special in a row (one as Victorian Clara and two as modern Clara)! So she's pretty much beat very other companion in New Who in that regard.

Gallade Zero

Oh, thank god. That probably means she isn't leaving this series.

Glad that Peter is staying on, surprised about Jenna to be honest - Don't get me wrong,it's great that she'll be back for Christmas. As for her staying for series 9, yes it would be brilliant.

However, Downton Abbey comes to mind here, I think their last Christmas special was meant to act as the real ending of the previous series which had been left on a cliffhanger. Given that Doctor Who now airs in a similar transmission period to Downton (Autumn run, few weeks off, then Christmas episode), it could mean that it could be Jenna's last episode.

Then again if Karen and Arthur stayed for 2 and a half seasons, then there's no stopping Jenna from sticking around. I mean it's not like the pre-2010 days where we'd be expecting a companion/Doctor change every season.

I'll close by saying that I hope Jenna and Peter are so great together  that I'll want them both to do another season next year.

For those wondering she leaves in a minisode to with a space badger on boxing day, Moffat is really carefull not to upset fans this christmas

If Clara doesn't improve over Series 8 then I hope she goes at Christmas, Moffat doesn't seem to write companions as well as Russel T did.

@Polyphase Me too! I was pretty gutted when Ecclebump only did one year but if Capaldi only did one, it would be indeed be devastation. He is just sooo good!

@The Outer Space K9If they're being transparent enough about her staying for the Christmas special, hopefully we will hear something about Jenna's future beyond that soon as well.

@RaggedyCurtis  Uh... even though nothing would please me more than seeing Clara die... I have to say I disagree with you. I don't think there's any call for killing a companion. I honestly don't see what the need it to "remind people" that a companion could die. Is mind wiping, and being trapped in the past, or stuck in a parallel universe not bad enough (even though that last one was eventually made into a rather nice "happy ending")? I mean, the only person to come out of the Tardis more or less ok, in a manner comparable to, let's face it, most of the Classic companions, is Martha. That's one companion out of 5. If anything, I would say that what we need is for more people to NOT have the Tardis experience end with their lives dented beyond all reasonable shape. So, however much it would please me to see Clara done away with in a horrifying manner... I'd rather she just left peacefully.

Yes, it's funny, especially considering how little screen time she had.

@NineTenElevenTwelve Yes, up until Jenna, the Christmas Specials always seemed to have one off Companions, as Companions always seemed to leave at the end of the normal series and only be replaced properly at the start of the next series

Rose was only in Christmas Invasion

Martha was in none

Donna was only in one when she wasn't actually the Companion

Amy and Rory were in two, but barely featured in them!

I hope they're not lying. Remember Matt said he was doing series 8 but he didn't.

@Gallade Zero Unless she does a Tegan. I.e. leave at the end of the series, "guest star" for the Special.

@dazfd96 RTD wrote chavs and hangers-on, Moffat has always written better companions.

YaelMoise
YaelMoise

@dazfd96 Word to the wise - It's best to put these sort of subjective assertions in a suitably subjective sort of way. Something like "I don't like Moffat's way of writing companions. I did like RTD's way of writing them". No one can or should argue with your tastes and opinions, but when you put it in a way that sounds like an objective assertion of facts - "Moffat doesn't write companions as well as Russel T Davies"... even if you modify it with the word "appear", it still can be taken the wrong way and will inevitably lead to people leaping to defuse the potential "Moffat vs RTD" argument that a statement like that is sure to spark.

DavidBlyth
DavidBlyth

@YaelMoise @RaggedyCurtis Frankly, anyone who wants to see a hard working and likeable actress have a perfectly fine character "die" is a bit of a smeghead who needs a life very badly

Planet of the Deaf
Planet of the Deaf

@The Outer Space K9 Ah but he never actually said HE would be back in S8, his words were never that specific...

Come to think of it, all Moff has said is that Peter and Jenna will film Xmas, so he wouldn't be lying if 12 and Clara both die at the end of S8, and the regenerated Doctor decides go back in time and visit Caecilius in Rome, where a Clara fragment saves their lives.

Not that I'm suggesting that this is what will happen (or what I want) of course!

HeyProfessor

@DavidBlyth @dazfd96 You act if that's a bad thing, and if so, it's incredibly offensive.

RTD wrote "chavs" and "hangers-on", and he was given critical acclaim for writing relateable characters.

Do you know how many people in 2005 between 2010 actually fell into the category?  Alot, and I was one of them, that's why I loved RTD's era, because it was relatable.

In my view, Moffat doesn't write relateable characters, well, that's not true, Amy being on her own as a child was relateable, and Clara knowing alot about computers, that was relatable to me.

In my view, RTD writes companions' personal lives better. HOWEVER, Moffat writes better stories, and that's why I support them "co-showrunning"

FOOTNOTE: This is not a flamewar attempt, I respect both showrunners.

@ Notsosmartguy the dalek of Jersey @dazfd96

'Not this crap again'

What an intolerant thing to say. If this guy thinks that Moffat can't write companions as well as RTD, he's allowed that opinion. His opinion is not 'crap'.

I think you should grow up and let the man have his opinion. Most people learn at a very young age that everyone is entitled to an opinion. If you didn't like what he had to say, what on earth compelled you to reply?
