Ben Miller Cast as Villain in Series 8

ben-miller-pThe BBC have announced that Ben Miller is set to guest star opposite Peter Capaldi when the new series of Doctor Who returns this autumn.

Commenting on his role, Ben Miller says: “As a committed Whovian I cannot believe my luck in joining the Twelfth Doctor for one of his inaugural adventures. My only worry is that they’ll make me leave the set when I’m not filming.”

Miller achieved fame as half of comedy duo Armstrong and Miller before success in dramas, including Primeval and, more recently, as DI Richard Poole, the central character in the first two series of the BBC’s Death In Paradise.

Miller’s partner in comedy, Alexander Armstrong, appeared in Doctor Who’s 2011 Christmas Special, playing Reg Arwell, but it’s Miller’s first time on the show and he’ll be starring in an episode written by Mark Gatiss.

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, adds: “Mark Gatiss has written us a storming villain for his new episode, and with Capaldi in the TARDIS, we knew we needed somebody special to send everybody behind the sofa. And quite frankly, it’s about time Ben Miller was in Doctor Who!”

Other familiar faces confirmed to join Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman in the new series, which will TX on BBC One later this year, include Tom Riley and Keeley Hawes.

I've watched all seasons of Primeval and I can't wait for Ben Miller to be the villain.

My god, I can't believe I only just noticed this! I think Ben Miller is a very underrated actor, he was incredible in Primeval and finding out that he's a secret Whovian is a great surprise!

When I was 6, a friend of mine kept going on about Doctor Who and Primevil, it is because of that I started watching Doctor Who, so I wouldn't have started if it weren't for Primevil.

I liked him on Primeval, and I think he's going to be a terrific villain. Looking forward a dialetic face to face between him and Capaldi..

Wow, Ben Miller! Can't wait to see that episode - Ben was the star of 'Death in Paradise', so this should be a cracker :)

You should mention that Alexander Armstrong is mainly known as the voice of super computer, Mr Smith, in the Sarah Jane Adventures.

Loved him as Lester in Primeval. Can't wait to see him in Doctor a Who! As Moffat so rightly says, it's about time he was in it! ;D

Perhaps he looked into an Anomaly and heard a drum beat ;)

Unusual choice for a villain but sometimes they can be the best. Look forward to it, Hell I am looking forward to anything Who :)

It'll be interesting to see what he's like in a villain role. His character in "Primeval" (who was my favourite) had the authoritative side to him that was villainous in some (very slight) respects, but generally he was just sarcastic and funny. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what he does in the role.

He was brilliant in Primeval, delivering sarcastic jibes with glee. I hope he's as great here as he was there!

This is fantastic news. I'm actually surprised that Ben Miller hasn't been on the show sooner. Plus, no disrespect to Miller (sorry for not knowing this), I am really surprised to find out he is one of us committed Whovians. Our club grows bigger every day. But yeah this is without a doubt good news and the more I hear the better Peter Capaldi's first series sounds. I loved Miller as James Lester in Primeval and I have yet to see his great work in Death in Paradise (keep meaning to get round and watching it). I can't wait to see what he does in Doctor Who. I'm confident he will make one of the best villains the show has produced and it is a Mark Gatiss episode, so we get two double bonuses. I mean it is Ben Miller after all and Gatiss' genius.

Amazing news and if you look at my checklist for actors to star in series 8 ( look and scroll down on my profile ). So glad that he is finally starring in Doctor Who

Nice to have a genuine scientist onboard, he should be able to handle the scientific gobbledygook well. Hope nobody mixes him up with Rob Brydon.

Great! I'm not sure what he'll be like as a villain as I've always imagined him as a good guy.

A great actor, and truly excited for what he'll do, but as a diehard Keeley fan I'm disappointed that this now knocks her news story off the headline spot on Doctorwhotv! Roll on Series 8!

Love this guy! He plays a good mentalcase too. See his two episodes of Doc Martin for reference :P His comedic timing is impeccable!

Oh my, Bough! Why you never made it into Johnny English Reborn still baffles me... Though I'm sure Doctor Who will more than make up for it!

@TheSoundofDrums  As a comedian with a science background, it's no surprise at all that he's a Whovian! There are plenty more Comedian types who like the show, Rufus Hound and Chris Addison spring to mind

He was, in a deleted scene. I was going to write this before I saw the below comment.

@Moxx  He was in a scene which they deleted! I was waiting for him all movie! I was hoping the entire movie either Johnny would need his help because everyone else had turned against him, or that he would appear in a hilarious end-credits scene in which he arrived back from vacation and realized he'd missed the whole thing, but no :(

@doctorwhothemaster2  Are you being deliberately obtuse to make some obscure point you deem intellectually esoteric or do you really not know? They mentioned that Miller's comedy partner, Armstrong played a one off character, Reg, but negated to mention his continuing role in a major spin-off for 5 series (and the SJA Alien files as well) and if this is not relevant to Whovians, then what is? I just thought that an article relating to Ben Miller which mentions his comedy partner's role in another episode may also mention the same actor's more major role in a spin-off, but perhaps the journalist who wrote the piece was not a hardcore fan and may not have known this?

Planet of the Deaf

@doctorwhothemaster2  It was a comedy about the production team producing a terrible soap set in Cornwall (starring Jason Donovan and Martine McCutchen), so you saw the sitcom about the production team, then saw the finished soap! Ben Miller was in the sitcom bit (as the producer)

Doctor Who-The Master
Doctor Who-The Master

Ah, I see now. I wrote that about a day after I read the article. FYI, I have seen every episode, inclooding recreations of the missing episodes, and watched SJA as a child until it was cannseled due to the death of Elizabeth Sladen. I don't take note of the details of Series 6 due to not partticualy liking that series like most classic Doctor Who fans.
