Another New Companion for Series 8?

doctor-who-series-8-chairsWill Series 8 of Doctor Who see another new companion?

Evidence is mounting that newcomer Ellis George will be joining Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Samuel Anderson for a trip in the TARDIS.

Rumours first began last month when Anderson tweeted “There’s a new member in the Who Crew, my little sis.” This was alongside the image to the right.

The announcement of the Lanzarote shoot then confirmed George will guest star in the episode, which makes it her second this series (that we know about so far). Her first being in episode 6, where she is believed to be a student of Coal Hill School.

So is Steven Moffat recreating the original TARDIS crew – an older Doctor, two teachers and a student from Coal Hill? It’s certainly looking that way.

UPDATE: According to filming rumours the character Ellis George will be playing is called Courtney. A better look at the character can be seen in a filming pic from yesterday (spoilerphobes may want to avoid) here.

Step back in time...

An unearthly child maybe! Coal Hill, a Doctor, two teachers and a child - spookily reminiscent to the oldies and Whovians.

Anybody else get the feeling this "Courtney" will be insanely clever and turn out to be the Doctor's daughter Jenny?

I know Jenny regenerated and stayed the same but maybe further down the line she "learns" how to change her face or maybe she can only heal the part of her body that is damaged. A head wound would changer her face.

That way it would be even more similar to an unearthly child

I'm starting to think that Courtney will be a bit like Adam in series one. She'll probably share a few adventures with the doctor, but eventually I think he'll drop her. Or maybe she'll be more like Mickey?

I wonder why they are all wearing suits in the pic maybe we are getting a planet with a different atmosphere that would be cool

I saw that girl yesterday I hope she is a smart girl not whiny, I have a feeling she will be good there seems to be a lot of thought, to her appearance not just shoved in as the Maitland kids were.

Well, I've always found Moffat has written some great dialogue for younger actors. I'm thinking of Young Amelia Pond (who almost stole "The Eleventh Hour", "Big Bang" and "Let's Kill Hitler" from Matt!),  CAL from Silence in the Library, Mandy from Beast Below, Lily and Cyril from The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe, Young Kazran in A Christmas Story, Franny and Digby in The Snowmen and almost the entire cast of The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances. It's practically his modus operandi and he does it well in my opinion. The real challenge with child actors is to first, find a fantastic, hard-working little actor or actress and then two, to write them very well. I do, however, share the fears of those who saw Tom Baker and Peter Davidson burdened with a bunch of child companions or the annoying white noise of Artie/And-whatever, more recently (as written by Gaiman and Gatiss, mostly - Moffat's additions in "Name" were actually kind of enjoyable, I thought).

They show a picture of a new companion and there are 2 of them?

Okay this is starting to annoy me now. Why is this website automatically assuming that Danny Pink is a companion? All we know is that he will be a recurring character. As far as I know, there has been nothing to suggest that he will be a companion at all. It's best to wait and see rather than making assumptions. However, if there has been an announcement to say that he will be a companion, then I obviously retract this post, and apologise in advance.

Does anyone else think it odd that the BBC announced one new possible companion, but not the other? I'm sure there's more the this than meets the eye.

Well, as long as she is a teenager, somewhat feel alright with this...but Im getting that "too many companions" feeling

Errgh I'm sorry if I offend anyone but I have an EXTREME dislike for the name Courtney (as a first name). And then you put it with her surname... Courtney Pink... dear lord.

To be honest, I'm not at all happy with more companions - I feel as if Clara still needs more time to develop as a character before there are more companions. I'm willing to give them a chance though, of course.

I think having a teenager on the TARDIS could be a really good idea if executed well, as long as she's not another Susan or those god awful Maitland kids.

The teal-coloured spacesuit looks very much like something out of 1980's Who. Still hoping that Capaldi's Doctor and the season overall will be much closer to the 1970's in tone and style.

I'm still not sold to Pink, Courtney Pink also not sounds well for me.

She doesn't seem that young, clealy she's not a kid more like a teenager. And if she's going to be a recurring companion that's a good thing.

I'm really looking foward to seeing how this new dynamic will work.

Also, maybe a few years down the line she gives birth to a little girl called Susan................

@Deus_Ex_Machina  Probably because Danny is a main character, while Courtney is little sis who gets dragged into adventures as well, like Martha's relatives did?

I think Ellis George won't really be a companion. She'll probably come in and out of the show like Adam in series one

@stargazer0118 If I'd write her, i think I'd make her sort of typical teenager but with s pinch of bravery and skills for get into troubles. And i I'd make that she gets on the TARDIS by accident, maybe because she follows Clara until the TARDIS and later she talks Danny about her.

There's nothing to suggest she will be :P

@MaraBackman Me too, I'm still hoping for Capaldi moving for the same wavelenght of Pertwee.

The Outer Space K9

Agreed, I mean I know the audience should identify with the characters but we don't need another spoiled, hard-to-impress teenager. Hope she's more geeky and actually I'd love to see someone like Howie (from the God Complex) travelling with the Doctor you know  someone shy, a bit gullible who could really develop throughout the series.

I don't like her name either but if it's a tribute to Nicholas Courtney as someone suggested then I'm good with it

MaraBackman

@TardisBoy To be fair, it's still a healthy suspicion. Featuring children and teenagers is always risky, depending on a multitude of factors that can backfire horrendously.

@The Outer Space K9 I like the idea of Courtney as tribute of the Old Brig (as I think Clara is an hommage for Liz Sladen), but Pink doesn't sounds well at all. I would have chosen another surname...Rogers, by example, that could be used as double hommage Courtney for the Brigadier, Rogers for Roger Delgado, and it would have fitted with Capaldi's Doctor looking as Pertwee's.

MaraBackman

@The Outer Space K9 To me it's more that many people just find it unappealing to feature children and teenagers in fiction, partly because many find children to be loud and annoying by default, while most adults consider teenagers to be obnoxious bundles of hormones and wangst. It's also notoriously difficult to write children or teenagers in a realistic way and still make them feel appealing to an audience. That is a big reason why Harry Potter stops being enjoyable for many people older than 20. The archetype of the child genius is also problematic, because a very young know-it-all will very often come across as teeth-grindingly annoying.

Although, it's not impossible to do it well. I recommend you watch Avatar: The Last Airbender asan example of a very well-written cast of realistic children and teenagers, who come across as very likeable. But as a general rule, I feel it's best to be cautiously skeptic until proven differently.

@TardisBoy  yes but how often is the writing good for child actors? angie and arty were examples of bad writing and bad acting and they didnt turn out well. i think most writers write children as though they are a few years less mature than they should be for their age, yet they are usually years ahead of themselves in terms of creativity, resourcefulness etc. and i cant bare to watch them quite a lot as they really make me cringe. when angie worked out the thing about Porridge i almost died with embarassment for the show :/

Then I advice you to be careful with how you portray these two and to choose your intended audience well.

TardisBoy
TardisBoy

Fair enough, I'll just politely agree to disagree :P

MaraBackman
MaraBackman

I still stand by my words. It's also not just the script or the acting, but it's a risk because children are not endearing to everybody and teenagers less so.

TardisBoy
TardisBoy

I wouldn't say using child actors/teenagers is a risk, and saying it seems to be a detriment to the plethora of talented young actors out there. Lots of films, TV shows etc use them and a lot of the time they're up to the standard of the adults they appear alongside, sometimes even surpassing them. I'd say the writing makes or breaks a child actor. Give them a bad script and they don't yet have the knowledge and ability to turn it around, with a good script however, they can work wonders.

@MaraBackman @TardisBoy I'm writing a story with two teenagers, one is a  rebel and foul mouthed, the other is a geek socially awkward.

I think we're all suffering from the Angie/Artie syndrome and we dread to think we might see something similar again. So I'm really doing my best to be positive about it.

@Liana21 @The Outer Space K9 Maybe it's not his real name. They might have made up a name in order to keep his real one secret, knowing there are lots of pple keeping an eye on filming and such... you never know, lol.

I don't like Pink (not even the colour) and the first time I heard about it I thought oh no but I kind of got used to it now.
