doctor-who-christmas-special-poster-clara(1)Put those Peter Jackson hopes on hold for another year. According to the producer’s online CV, Paul Wilmshurst will be directing this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special.

Wilmshurst has already directed two episodes of Series 8: episode 7 and 8, written by Peter Harness and Jamie Mathieson respectively.

Filming on the festive special begins after the World Tour with Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman confirmed to return earlier in the week.

I'm hoping it's not a recycled fairy tale this time. Something original and fun would be nice. The Runaway Bride has been my favorite followed by The Snowmen

I wish Jenna had been wearing that hat all through "Time of the Doctor". XD

It's interesting that whereas Christmas special would be filmed before the next series, with the autumn slot for the main series, now it is being filmed after the previous series. This is clearly being filmed as part of the S8 filming block, though presumably will appear on the S9 boxset out in November 2015!

A Peter Capaldi Christmas. I wonder what its going to be like.

Oh God, how can we already be discussing Christmas... Time has definitely gone wibbly wobbly, thinking about how time seems to have gone really slowly waiting for Doctor Who to return, yet looking back the year just seems to have flashed by.

It will be interesting to see how the special pans out, for me the Christmas specials are an extremely mixed bag - but I think I'll put off looking forward to seeing that for the time being, there are far too many other things to anticipate just now...

Hopefully it'll be better than all of the terrible Matt Smith Christmas specials! The trick is not to set it totally around Christmas

I'm just hoping that Clara doesn't die in the episode like in "The Snowman". I want Clara back next year.

Episode 11 and 12 should be 60 minutes. Because they've taken 15 minutes out of Episode 13 and placed it into the 60 minute opener, there for making it 75 minutes, so add the remaining 30 to the final two episodes, at least, in a way, we are still getting our thirteenth episode and it's not wasted at all, because it's ridiculous that we don't have one this year. Plus, I think this should be Clara's last, she'll have done 25 Episodes, good number to leave and depart on really, to be honest, but then again, she might be scared of being out on a job, really, but who knows.

Similarly to The Next Doctor in terms of its relation to the other Specials.

@MrRazza, Awaiting Results on Thursday Time perception is funny like that.  Right now in the states, it's only thirteen more days.  For some reason, "two weeks away" feels a million times longer to me that "thirteen days away."  When I realized that today was the tenth I breathed a sigh of relief and said "only thirteen more days."

@DavidSJH  ^This*1000!!  That's one of the things that annoyed me about Matt's first couple of Christmas specials.  Was that they felt overtly Christmassy.  One of the things I really came to love about the first few Christmas specials is that they didn't feel the need to do that.  They only felt obligated to tell a good Doctor Who story that, as it happens, takes place during Christmas.  It gave them a unique feel all their own from all of the same old schmaltzy, sentimental, sugar plum programming we're already getting everywhere else at that time of year.

So you hope for cheesy killer christmas trees and santa clause robots?

@DavidSJH True. Then it caters for those who celebrate the holiday and then those, like, me, who don't.

@DavidSJH Christmas Specials are a mixed bag for me but I thought Matt had the best ones. TDTW&W was bad but all the others were amazing. I like Christmas-y Christmas Specials. I was getting tired of the Alien Invasion of London on Christmas day filmed in July. The Runaway Bride is the worst. The script is good but the Director didn't do a fantastic job. Although for his defense, I don't know what he could have done to make July look like December.

I want her to leave part way through S9. I don't want her to leave rushed in the finale or Christmas special.

They can't kill my favourite comnpanion this Christmas. Please don't do that to me. I don't want to have another Christmas ruined. I'm honestly waiting the announcement that Clara is in series 9 to come soon.

Why would Clara's 25th episode be any better or worse to leave on than her 24th or 26th or 37th?

Every episode is a bit longer as usual. Like around 50 minutes.

For me, it doesn't seem to make a difference. "A Christmas Carol" and "The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe" were both very Christmassy, but one of them is one of my favorite episodes and the other is... not. I think it worked very well in the case of the former, but the former was already a great story on its own merits in my opinion. The latter was a lousy story, but not because of the Christmassy stuff. It was just dull.

@SephoraNeedSeries8 @DavidSJH  For me it goes:

The Christmas Invasion-Brilliant!

The Runaway Bride-Awful

Voyage of the Damned-I love it (I know I'm in a minority)

The Next Doctor-Awful

The End of Time-I have still yet to develop an opinion on this episode, as strange as it sounds.

A Christmas Carol-Best Christmas Special

TDTW&W-Awful

The Snowmen-Meh...

The Time of the Doctor-Brilliant!

@ Notsosmartguy the dalek of Jersey @DavidSJH Especially Matt's first two specials were wonderfully christmassy and that's pretty much just what I want from Christmas TV. The fairytale tone of his early seasons fit it very well though, so I'm not quite sure if that would work as well now. I can't imagine Twelve in A Christmas Carol, doing all the growing up thing with the little boy.

As am I, if she is staying on, when do you think we'd get an official confirmation? Whilst this series is airing?

@Calebxy Agreed. We get one season of Martha and one of Donna but God knows how many of Clara... I am really hoping she doesn't stay on for all of series 9.

That wasn't a monster. At least if you see it from a plot perspective. And anyway, it was cute.

@Antee991166 @SephoraNeedSeries8 @DavidSJH Hmmm.

The Christmas Invasion: Good - but weak as an introduction for a Doctor.

The Runaway Bride: Catherine Tate, great. Story, weak.

Voyage of the Damned: Guilty pleasure.

The Next Doctor: boring and forgettable.

The End of Time: A mixed affair of corniness and melodrama, but written well with broad brushstrokes to reintroduce the Time Lords, The Master and "The Moment". A case of an experienced writer indulging too much, me thinks. Cried like a baby when I first watched it.

A Christmas Carol: Brilliant, although it's not one I regularly re-watch. Pacing is a bit on the slow side.

TDTW&W: Might be sappy but this is my favourite Christmas special. A guilty please. It's companion is one of Moff's best characters and Matt is excellent in it.

The Snowmen: Love the magical staircase, but otherwise this seems like a dull affair to me. Strax is fun.  Grant and Ian Mckellen are severely underused.

The Time of The Doctor: Overall great. I like how jam-packed it is - it's a very tightly written piece which creates, more than it revisits. This is one that gets much better with every rewatch, whereas I found The End of Time deteriorates in my mind with every reshowing.

@A Friend of the Ood @pyroclasticflow @Calebxy Yeah honestly I didn't like her at all at first, but then I went back and watched all her episodes and she grew on me. I don't dislike her anymore but I'm still not a big fan. I would love for a more "exotic" companion... I dunno, just someone other than a pretty British girl next time around.
