20 Years After Its Comeback, Is It Time to Rest Doctor Who? Mark Gatiss Thinks So
Mark Gatiss, long-time contributor to Doctor Who, has suggested that the show might be due for another “rest” after two decades on the air.
In a recent interview with Prospect magazine, Gatiss reflected on the show’s longevity since its 2005 revival and hinted that a break could be beneficial.
“It’s been back for 20 years, which is an awfully long time,” Gatiss said. “Almost as long as its original run. That’s pretty spectacular. So maybe it’s time for another rest.”
While he remained uncertain about what lies ahead for the series, Gatiss was clear on one thing. “I really don’t know. I only know that I still love the show with all my heart.”
Gatiss has written nine episodes for the modern series, beginning with “The Unquiet Dead” in 2005. His final script, “Empress of Mars”, aired in 2017 during Peter Capaldi’s tenure as the Twelfth Doctor.
Alongside his writing, Gatiss has also appeared on screen in Doctor Who, most notably as Professor Lazarus in “The Lazarus Experiment” and as the Captain in “Twice Upon a Time”, Capaldi’s farewell episode.
As Doctor Who currently stands at a crossroads, it’s not impossible that Gatiss’s call for a break could become reality, or perhaps it already has?
