Moffat: Peter Jackson Episode Will Probably Happen

peter-jackson-doctor-who-dalek Steven Moffat has said that Peter Jackson’s (Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit) long-mooted Doctor Who episode will probably happen “at some point”.

Speaking in the latest issue of SFX, Moffat said: “He’s still incredibly busy on The Hobbit. I’ve spoken to him face to face, and he would like to do one. He accepts that there’s no money and that there’s no time, and it would have to be when he’s available – and I don’t think he’s even been available enough to answer our emails of late!

“I think it will probably happen at some point. I mean, he can do what the hell he likes – he owns New Zealand! I think he’s sincere in his Doctor Who fandom, to say the least. He’s a nice guy, he quite often drops me a line after a show goes out. He’s into it – it’s just “Can you make it work?”

“I think he would also like us to go and make it in New Zealand! And I’m like “Okaaay… I’d rather we just flew you to Cardiff!””

Step back in time...

Imagine Peter could get Andy Serkis to come in and do a monster or something

It's a shame Doctor Who doesn't get out into this big wide world, Some great locations would be a bonus :)

As an Australian, I'd love for them to come over and film here, but New Zealand woud be just as good. As a side note, I would love to see Wes Anderson direct a few episodes.

I'd still like to see a Capaldi written and directed episode.

He owns NZ? Not quite yet. Infact, of cause most us in NZ love his work, but we're facing other problems too. I think it'll be cool to film in NZ, not because of media, but because there are some earth braking scenery. Doctor Who in New Zealand would be great, since, well... NZ was the first country outside of the UK to screen Doctor Who.

I must admit I've never managed to be patient enough to watch Lord of the Rings especially with all the advertisments they put on TV. It just seems endless. But I plan to read the books this summer.

Just saying, I think New Zealand is the perfect place to recreate the fan art Peter Capaldi made all those years ago. That would be an amazing sight to see, and it would mean a lot to Capaldi I'm sure.

I just want the Bad Taste aliens in it, or at least some sort of reference. I'd be so happy.

Jackson can do low budget. He made Bad Taste for almost nothing whilst he held down a day job (mind you it did take him several years to make....)

I hope Moffat writes it, too. Great writing and direction would be a surefire way to get a classic.

No matter the hassle, I wouldn't pass up a trip to and an episode shot in New Zealand!

I would love to see an episode is New Zealand, definitely directed by him!

It would nice (if the plot took it in that direction) to see the scenery of New Zealand double for Gallifrey. Imagine the scale of those LOTR/Hobbit shots for Doctor Who...

Yeah, I mean, he'll be finished with the Hobbit by the end of this year, maybe he could then do the Series 9 finale, a three-parter maybe even?!

That can only mean a 10 hour trilogy of Doctor Who at some point in the future then!

It's a shame he's already missed the episode where forces of evil lay siege to a town... ;)

Doctor Who would be a vanity project for Peter Jackson and as such I can see it either becoming an over produced and slick fan fest or (and this is what I think would be the case) the best show ever, just as long as he stays away from the Darleks and Cybermen which are both suffering from over exposure and under use.

I'd rather see Graeme Harper return if I'm honest… But Peter Jackson would bring a lot of attention to the show!

Gandalf could be an incarnation of the Doctor from a parallel Universe... That would be funny... Doesn't River mention how wizards in stories always turn out to be the Doctor! Perhaps Jackson could direct an episode where the Doctor visits Tolkien!

It'll be cool if he directs a two-parter, because then it'll probably end up being a triple-parter knowing him XD

Maybe Series 10? That would give him time to finish the The Hobbit trilogy.

Reply below with some epic LotR movie title parodies with a Doctor Who twist. I'm eager to hear some. Usually I'd be all over this, but it's almost midnight and my mind is dead.

"He owns New Zealand!" As a proud Australian citizen, I find jokes about New Zealand to be hilarious. But wait, if us Aussies are so superior, where's our multi-million dollar fantasy film franchise? I'd better do something about this.

I hadn't thought of that! A doctor who \ bad taste crossover would make my life complete :-)

@floppy_who Well has it ever been easy to go back after you've done something completely different for several years?

Having said that, it would be great to see how he adapts his style if he's restricted to lower budget Cardiff locations for filming.

@supermoff  @Malohkeh Absolutly. And taking the Doctor to New Zealand would be great. If you watch movies like "The Chronicles of Narnia", "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit", then you see how beautifull the whole place is. In fact, Warner Bros. should've shot the Harry Potter movies there. I'm pretty sure they would have been even more magical.

I imagine that given his prestige, if he does ever direct an episode of Doctor Who it'll be one of the bigger budget episodes of its series - and I'd stake money on it being either the series opener or the finale.

It isn't multi-million dollar really, and most of us haven't even heard it!
