Gillan on saying Goodnight to her Raggedy Man

amy-time-regen-smith

Karen Gillan has explained how happy she was to make a cameo return for Matt Smith’s final moments in The Time of the Doctor.

Speaking at this month’s Sci Fi Expo panel, she said: “I was so happy! My agent phoned me and said, ‘They want you to come back to Doctor Who,’ and I was like ‘Yes!’ immediately.

“I think part of the reason that Steven Moffat wrote me into that scene was just so that Matt would have me around for his regeneration. And that was the nicest part for me, just to watch him do that, his final moments in the character.”

She later joked about the pair both wearing wigs during filming: “I keep imagining that scene but with both of us bald!”

How it all began – Gillan recently posted this rare test picture of Amy and the Doctor in costume.

On the replacement of young Amelia, originally played by her cousin Caitlin Blackwood, she said: “Caitlin was too tall now, so they brought in a girl with really long hair and I just remember feeling so protective over the role that I was like, ‘No. The hair is wrong guys!”

Gillan said she found the experience of seeing Capaldi on set a strange experience: “It’s so weird just watching from the outside all of a sudden. I was thinking ‘This is their TARDIS now’. Then seeing Capaldi walk in the studio was funny because it was really dark inside and light outside so when he walked in the first time he was just this silhouette. I was like ‘Oh my god!’ as he came towards us dressed in the Doctor’s clothes.”

i always knew that cameo was gonna happen, how they explained it in the episode I wasn't so sure off. I'd rather they had kept the first actress for young amelia(she was really good), but i can understand why they didnt

"Nice wig."  "Thanks, you too!"

I don't much care for this scene in terms of the episode, but damn, was it an impressive cameo considering how hushed up it was :D

I never saw this cameo coming. Amazing how they managed to keep it so quiet.

Kaza looked stunning, I don't think she ever looked better

They should have done a dvd extra of that scene without their wigs, Would be hilarious :)

Oh my gosh, they're both wearing wigs in this scene! They should have swapped them or something XD

I miss 11 and Amy, they had such a great dynamic. Their friendship was magical IMO.  And it helped that Matt and Karen had really great chemistry. Rory was great too. Matt, Karen and Arthur worked so well together. It's really sweet that they brought Karen back so Matt would have her on set!

I think that him seeing Amelia had an affect on how he appear after regenerating. Doesn't the Twelfth Doctor look like an older Rory (the Roman)?

Notice that Clara had never heard him speak of Amelia was but she certainly knew of a Dr Song. Wonder what kinds of things he told her about River? I find it interesting that he had talked about one and not the other. What do you think that means?

Oh, dear, we seem to be stuck in the sodding Davies vs Moffat argument. AGAIN. Truly, it's one of my life's greatest regrets...

They look like a couple of kids in that 2010 picture. Hasn't time flown by.

Am the only one that thinks that the line "the first face this face saw" was put there for two reasons? One because of the importance of Amy in Eleven's run/story, to somehow give a closure of it, and two because of Clara and Twelve? With the way Twelve stared at Clara, it just adds more depth to the fact that she is "the first face his face saw". I hope someone replies, i want more opinions.

This new commenting system is awful, you don't know if someones replying to you or if they're replying to someone else. plus you can't edit your comments after 5 mins, and that isn't ages, doesn't matter what 8 said.

Their chemistry is amazing isn't it? Karen is of course heading for stardom quite rightly in the guardians of the Galaxy film plus has scored a US TV pilot. Pretty good, huh! And Moff has already called it by saying Matt is the one actor who played the Doctor who has the talent and charisma and is a genuinely beautiful person who is gunna break free of the Who legacy and be a global superstar. Imagine them on stage together on Broadway or in a big Hollywood film - oh yessss please. Moff must be so proud to have worked with such wonderful actors and lovely lovely people.

@dschram  12 is Scottish, which could have something to do with seeing Amy before he regenerated.

@dschram  Kind of...maybe? ...No, I can't see he does. If he played Rory's dad instead of Mark Williams, I don't think I'd be able to buy him in that role.

@dschram Well, to be honest that is kind of the Doctor's thing. He never talks about previous companions to his current companions, some of them don't even know there were previous companions..!

However, the fact that he never talked about Amy doesn't mean she wasn't important to him. The fact she was the last person he thought of before regenerating proves that.

@dschram  I presumed that Clara knew about Amy, but not that her real name was Amelia. I don't think he told her much about River either, well you don't talk about your ex to your new 'bird' do you :-)

Notsosmartguy

It was probably more painful for him to talk though this is based me assuming 11 had a bigger space in his heart for Amelia than river despite the fact that he and the river shared some sort of a a romantic relationship. Also remember Clara thought river was a boy so he must not have gotten into too many details .

Same :-) I sadly regret my contribution to the argument:-(

@JustMarianna I kind of feel like Clara is really going to come into her own with Twelve. It's the same way Rose may have started with Nine, but she really came to be associated with Ten. Eleven will always be seen as sort of "belonging" to The Ponds first. I'm thinking (hoping) Clara will be thought of as Twelve's main Companion. :)

BeyondThePolice

@JustMarianna  Although in Six's case, he decided to strangle the first face he saw...but I think you're right about that line. It was worded slightly oddly, don't you think? I definitely think there could be more than meets the eye on that one.

Planet of the Deaf
Planet of the Deaf

@JustMarianna  The reason in the episode was presumably that Clara didn't know who Amelia was, 11 may have told her about Amy, but not that she was actually called Amelia. The implication for Clara and 12 is in the long term more important though, as you said!

@JustMarianna  Yeah, the Doctor (especially in NuWho) seems to be defined by the first faces they see after a regeneration (Ten/Rose, Eleven/Amy). That's why I think Clara will be given even more depth with Twelve.

@YgorVale  I created a livefyre account just to post this one comment:  I totally agree!  In addition to its being confusing (and not just because I'm used to Disqus--I'm familiar with many different commenting systems), it's annoying how all of my upvotes that I cultivated by making good, quality comments over the past year are now defunct...  :(  I don't comment on DWTV anymore, sadly, except for this exception.

@TheOncomingFish @dschram Ooh, I like that. Like how the 10th Doctor was influenced by Rose when he regenerated, maybe the 12th Doctor became Scottish because of the impact Amy had on his 11th incarnation.

Headcannon accepted!

TheFirst

@RhonDOH @JustMarianna That's also what I'm hoping. Some Doctors are just linked to certain companions and by the end of series 8 Clara will have had more adventures with 12 than with 11 so I'm certain people will eventually associate her more with 12.

I'm also curious how long Clara will stay with 12. I hope she stays for at least two more series, but I think they do have to add another companion, maybe in series 9. Also, Clara needs the character development!

JustMarianna
JustMarianna

@RhonDOH @JustMarianna  No matter how much i love the chemistry between Smith/Coleman, i completely agree with you! She will be thought of as 12's companion. Since Coleman signed in for a year, exactly like Capaldi, i expect 13 episodes of them together, and i expect them to build a nice run, and add to Clara's personality, character and story line. And yes i think that Eleven belongs to the Ponds, because he basically spent his entire run with them, he spent only a few episodes with Clara, where Ten had his time divided between Rose, Martha and Donna. The Ponds are the defining aspect of his era.

JustMarianna
JustMarianna

@BeyondThePolice @JustMarianna  We are talking about Moffat here, there's a meaning behind many lines. And i know that's a big thing to say. But still think of it."You'll be there til the end of me, or vice versa". "I am running towards you and Rory before you...FADE...away from me" and they both happen! He deliberately puts things in the script

JustMarianna
JustMarianna

@luckypenny @JustMarianna  Completely agree with that, plus companions like Clara evolve with the new doctor rather the departing one. And i am saying companions like Clara, because Sarah Jane, Peri and i guess others but i don't really remember now, where introduced at the end of the departing doctor's run, and they basically evolved during the new doctor's run.

@TheFirst @RhonDOH@JustMarianna Me, too. :) I think Jenna's done a tremendous job finding layers to a character she's only played for a very short time now. She's already had some incredibly moving moments. So, if she gets a couple more seasons under her belt, can you imagine? She could be one of the best Companions ever!

BTW, is Livefyre acting weird for anyone else right now? O.0

@Amy the Consulting Commentator  I think that you are referring to Grace, although technically the very first face he saw was a dude, a medic. LOL. I don't have much to comment on, but she did have an influence on that particular incarnation in a way.

JustMarianna

@Warpstar  Oh yes, i know. But we came to get to know her better with four, cause she was given more time to evolve.

Not Sarah Jane, she had several adventures with the third doctor before regeneration.

@Lewis94.  The fact remains that the admin didn't want it, and had never wanted it. And we should respect his decision, and the fact it reflected the reviews of most (but not all) of the regulars, after testing it.

TheOncomingHurricane

@Lewis94.  It was our belief that it was also stifling intelligent debate because someone would just dislike rather than saying why they disagreed. Anyway, that was only one of a number of reasons DWTV made the change.
