Series 9 Daleks: A Spotter Guide
Guest contributor Rob Colonna goes Dalek hunting in the latest trailer.
The new Series 9 trailer debuted August 12th and the second I saw it the first thing I did was screenshot a still of all the Daleks from different eras and share the picture with my friends. While they may not have freaked out as much as I did, they all agreed that it is a huge moment in the trailer. I feel like there are more Classic era Daleks here than in Asylum of the Daleks. Let’s take a look!
1. 1960’s Dalek
That silver and blue Dalek dates all the way back to the very first Dalek story back in 1963. There are at least three or four in the shot, and there may be more throughout the episode. I have a theory that these may be the Daleks that the First Doctor trapped in the first episode, but more on that later.
2. 1970s/1980s Dalek
These Daleks first appeared in the Fourth Doctor story Genesis of the Daleks and throughout the rest of the Classic Era. These are my personal favorite Daleks from all of Doctor Who. I only see one of them in the shot but I’m hopeful there will be more!
3. 2008 Supreme Dalek
This is without a doubt the Supreme Dalek from the 2008 two-parter The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End. The Supreme Dalek was apparently destroyed at the end of the story, but its return makes me hopeful for the return or Davros and maybe even Dalek Caan. Personally I feel its time for a Davros return and I’d like to see in the comments if anyone else agrees.
4. Special Weapons Dalek
First appearing in Seventh Doctor story Remembrance of the Daleks in the late 1980s, it can just about be spotted lurking in the background.
Black Dalek/Sec?
There is also an all black Dalek in the second shot that I did not circle because I’m not sure if it’s a new one (possibly “Dalek Sec”) or one from Resurrection of the Daleks. Either way it looks awesome!
Skaro?
This is something I noticed in both the first and second trailer. The city looks like the one from Skaro from the very first Dalek episode, as shown from the picture comparison above. This leads me to a theory that the Time War Daleks went back to the original city and freed the trapped originals. Maybe Davros and the Supreme Dalek had something to do with it? We can all dream can’t we.
Overall I am delighted to see more Classic Era Daleks mixed in with the Time War Daleks. I just hope that this time they have a bigger role than in Asylum of the Daleks where I feel they were really there just to put on posters. Maybe Moffat learned from that episode; it sure seems that the Classic Daleks are in more of the forefront in this trailer. Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed my article!
