Murray Gold Teases New & Returning Doctor Who Themes, Promises Series 10 Soundtrack
Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine (#590) Gold first teased his plans for the new Doctor Who theme, or themes…: “Probably you’re expecting a version that spins on Russell’s favourite iteration of the theme? I’m sure if you delve through Russell’s interviews, you’ll be able to find which one that is. Or which ones.”
DWM notes:
A while back – quite a while back – Russell hinted that he wanted “the 2006 theme tune but bigger, with more piano”. I mention this to Murray, whose eyes widen as he reaches for a pencil. “Oh, I’m glad you told me,” he says, pretending to make notes. Wait, he is making notes. “Must… rewrite… theme… That’s it, yup,” he laughs, “you’ve got it. Rumbled.” He’s teasing us, isn’t he?
“What I would say is, we might be talking about more than one main theme. I don’t see why it can’t be a different one every week.’ He’s definitely teasing us.
Gold later spoke of David Tennant’s return as the 14th Doctor: “He steps straight back into that character as if he never left it. With, I suppose, an added aura of what the hell am I doing here? As a character, I mean. Because this is the question mark that sort of threads the episodes together.”
He teased some familiar themes returning: “It’s inevitable that you’re going to get the odd reminiscence. For example, there’s a little bit of Donna’s Theme as soon as we hear her [in Special One]. There’s a bit of The Doctor’s Theme in there, too.
He added: “But they’re not old recordings. All the music that I’ve done – so far – is brand new, even when it’s evoking an older theme. Then I think, for Ncuti, it’s important that the music feels brand new…”
Finally, Gold spoke about the MIA Series 10 soundtrack release: “I don’t know what happened. Well, all those world events happened. But it is out there, somewhere.”
He concluded: “Look, it will come out. That’s an exclusive. The Series 10 album will see the light of day. By hook or by crook.”
