Happy New Year 2019!
Usually in this column DWTV would reflect on the past year and look ahead to the new one, but this time things are a bit different. We, of course, still have an episode to go in just a matter of hours and this feels like the actual finale to Jodie Whittaker’s first year as the Doctor. Especially with the long-awaited return of a certain classic foe (and the only returning threat). Often a major testing ground for the incumbent Doctor…
We can still talk about Series 11, and few would argue what we have had so far was a perfect run. There were highlights naturally, but there were also some noticeable low points too. At the very least Chris Chibnall can be praised for not choosing the easy route, instead taking some bold risks and making Doctor Who feel different and refreshed. After well over a decade of the revival now, that is no simple task.
Unfortunately looking beyond the special later today, 2019 isn’t looking like it’s going to be the most exciting year for Whovians. Once again, we face another long wait and a gap year. It’s hard to look on that as a positive after getting only one series of a new Doctor. But perhaps though with slightly more time, Chibnall can hone into what really worked with Series 11 and deliver something stronger for Team TARDIS’ second year in 2020.
As always, only time will tell.
In the meantime, happy new year from DWTV, and be sure to join us later in the evening to rate “Resolution”!
