Tom Baker Reunion with Sarah Jane Was Planned

tom-baker-sladen-sarah-janeThere were plans for Tom Baker to reunite on-screen with Elisabeth Sladen in The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Baker himself revealed that the Fourth Doctor would have appeared in the spin-off before Sladen’s untimely passing.

He said: “I think it was being mooted at a time when Elisabeth began to be ill. I’d never seen [The Sarah Jane Adventures], you see, but she was so thrilled.

“I had a terrific, tender thing for her. I never met her out of the studio, except by the time she was doing that. But I never got around to doing that. “

Look at that pic at the top and you immediately see the fantastic relationship between the fourth Doc and Sarah Jane. We didn't need continual comments about how wonderful she was as we did with the over rated Rose. No lovey doveyness, no kissing, just good friends. The understated way in which Baker says in one episode 'This is Sarah Jane Smith, she's my best friend' says it all

Another saddening fact that I have to digest. It's heartbreaking to think that had she still been with us we would have had Ace in the show and the Fourth Doctor making guest appearances and probably other past companions and Doctors as the series' went on due to Russell T Davies' fantastic idea of bringing back old characters, which I always loved about him. I loved to watch The Sarah Jane Adventures. I, like Doctor Who, watched it from when it started and really got into it by the third series, which is where I think it really began to pick up. The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith was a real milestone in the show and it was such a big commotion for me having the Tenth Doctor appearing on the show and it was and still is a lovely episode, as is the Death of the Doctor. It was sad watching the last series and knowing that if she hadn't died then the show being so popular it would still be running now and I would still be watching and it would probably run for the next ten years seeing as how committed she was to doing the show. I found it an interesting read, the special magazine on the unproduced episode and future planned episodes and what we could've looked forward to had the show continued, but glad they ended it the way they did with the emotional epilogue music and I'm glad to have been a kid while it was on and having known  Sarah Jane Smith and Elisabeth Sladen thanks to Russell T Davies bringing her back. R.I.P Elisabeth Sladen, you will always be missed.

This just broke my heart... The Sarah Jane Adventures are so special to me because before I started watching it, I had never even heard of Doctor Who (yes, really!) The reunion would have been amazing, especially since the 10th and 11th Doctors also appeared on the programme. RIP the beautiful and amazing Elisabeth Sladen x

Oh, that would've been so lovely.  I just started re-watching her final season and it's heartbreaking to see how they were clearly laying the groundwork for more, and yet the season is really quite brief.  She had to have already known she was dying, but she kept on anyway.  Almost too much of a professional.  Such a magnificent lady.

And now to learn we might've had a 4th Doctor reunion.....oh, what a shame to have lost that.  :-(  But then, she gave every bit she could, and I have to remember that and keep it in mind.  Elisabeth Sladen was absolutely committed to any job she took, and that dedication shows -- and I think it's why we got such a good final season, even if it is painfully short.  I think if they'd known she was sick, they would've asked her to take a break, to rest, or to have even retired the character.  Instead, she gets an ending a bit like how Doctor Who prepared for cancellation; the series was cancelled after "Survival" was in the can, so they had to tack something on to the end to give it closure.  But since the serial was basically done, they were limited to something that closed it without actually *ending* it.

And that's how SJA ended up as well.  What became final episode was basically in the can when she died, so the best they could do is tack on something that would close it without ending it.  And because of that, we're left with a great deal of momentum, and a sense that they are absolutely all still having adventures.  Only now they get to have them in our minds.

It's not as good as still having new episodes, but it's a lot better than what we'd have if they'd intentionally closed down the series, I think.  And we have Elisabeth Sladen's professionalism to thank for that.

So sad, all the things that could have been. I still can't believe it will be the 3rd anniversary of her death on Saturday, it feels like only yesterday I heard the heartbreaking news.

It's still hard to imagine Elisabeth is gone.

I became Whovian last year, and didn't know who she was until last year.

And then, I had a Remy (ratatouille) moment.

Finding out this great woman, who was an inspiration to a lot of people...was dead.

Elisabeth Sladen-dead?

I couldn't believe my eyes.

I just saw her in New Who for the first time, and she was brilliant.

I don't think I'll ever come to terms with her death, and this story was sad.

Not devastating, just sad.

As much as I love Matt (my Doctor), Tom Baker would've been better for an episode.

RIP, Lis.

My Sarah Jane. :(

That is really tragic to hear. It would've been nice to see this and the supposed return of Ace joining Elizabeth Sladen in her amazing spin-off. The most tragic thing I find is her work was unfinished. She never got to finish Series 5 and recieve the conclusion that was planned. Her work was half done which just makes her untimely passing all the more sad. The saddest thing in this world is the passing of those that get taken from us before their time. Elizabeth had so much energy and loved her role as Sarah Jane Smith with all her heart and adored her many, many fans. We will forever miss you Liz.

It could work by having The Fourth Doctor being displaced in time and meeting an older SJ with Rani, Luke, and Clyde, saving the planet in some timey wimey event before returning to his own time line, (the 1970s) with no memory at all could work - similar to how Ten and War don't remember the events of TDOTD. It'd be heartbreaking either way - Four probably would never be able to recall the adventure afterwards.

That would have been amazing! And surely there would've been a funny K-9 moment in there too! Gosh Liz's passing still hurts me badly, such a wonderful woman. There are times when I literally just stand there and remember I'll never see that fantastic actress come face to face with the current Doctor in a new situation again and it hurts :(

That would've been one of the greatest moments TV ever. I've not wathed all SJA yet, but it was pretty cool and it would be so awesome see Sarah with her Doctor again.

Argh, this makes me hate Sladen's death even more! Why did she have to go?! It was WAY before her time. :(

To have Baker back in SJA would of been awesome!!!

DWTV, can you please stop posting articles like this, it just upsets me so much that we cannot see these episodes, and that we lost such a brilliant actress

I already knew about this, he was going to show up in her wheelie bin, I think... It was so sad when she passed away, she was such a wonderful actress, and won everyone from the Time Warrior to the end of the SJA. And at such a time too. Ace and the Seventh Doctor were even being discussed by RTD and Gareth Roberts to appear in the next series.

If I remember rightly, the Brigadier was going to return to the show a few more times. Had he been well enough I think he'd have appeared in Death of the Doctor, and I've got a feeling that the finale of Series 5 (The Battle of Bannerman Road) would have seen a return from him too, as well as Jo Grant and the Trickster. Don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty sure that I read it somewhere just after the show ended.

Wow, how great would this have been? Tom's always welcome to return to the Whoniverse in my book, and seeing him on The Sarah Jane Adventures (which I've recently finished another marathon of) would have been spectacular. I miss Lis and feel very privileged to have met her, albeit only for a few minutes.

Apparently there were plans for the two to record a series for Big Finish as well, but alas it never was.

Russell T Davies was a massive fan of Doctor Who, therefore he planned to have The Fourth Doctor, Ace and The Seventh Doctor on The Sarah Jane Adventures, so imagine if he stayed on Doctor Who what could we have had for the 50th anniversary because we already had Jo Grant, The Brigadier and The Elventh Doctor, appearing on The Sarah Jane Adventures.

But because he is no longer with us, Peter Capaldi can make our dreams come true by persuading Steven Moffat to bring certain people back, I hope.

That would have been such a magical, key moment in the show's canon (both Who and TSJA). I can't even comprehend how special it would have been. It's deeply sad to know such a reunion will never happen.

Just imagining how fantastic it would have been to see them reunited. Or even in the audio adventures, getting to have interviews with Lis and Tom together. Every time I see that picture–– any picture of Lis, really–– I tear up.

I still think Sarah Jane Adventures could return in a few ways.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Audios - The cast such as Tommy Knight (Luke Smith) and Clyde (Daniel) etc could do audio's, the story's that never where (Meet Mr Smith, The Thirteenth Floor etc) and other stories that they could make, Also if there where to do audios from Sarah Jane's view, They should get Saidie Miller (her daughter) to say it, You wouldn't technically be replacing Elisabeth Sladen because it's her daughter, and i'm sure Liz would be proud of her daughter                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Animated Cartoon's? Books? Rough Scrips? There's lot's of possibilities to bring it back

You know what, good on Moffat for making it possible for remaining classic Doctors to return. The thing with Tom Baker was great as the mysterious Curator and it is a great shame that he didn't get to reprise his role earlier with Sarah Jane. That woman is missed so much and just to think it's been almost 3 years without her. But if there really is a reason to bring back Tom or even Peter Davison, Colin Baker or Sylvester McCoy, then bring it on. They can all be the Curator, just in different forms. But obviously just as cameos, we don't want them to take too much focus away from Mr Capaldi. His Doctor could just be, the best.

Gustaff

I do not intend to sound rude, but if Tom hadn't been so stubborn about returning to the role of the Doctor, then the 'actual' Fourth Doctor could've met Sarah Jane Smith in the SJS audio series produced by Big Finish between 2002 and 2006. Plenty of time to spark a reunion, even though it would clash with the events referenced in School Reunion.

Putting in an aged 'Fourth Doctor' or another 'Curator' type character wouldn't really make much sense and would involve another set of 'time-differential' explanations.

That's just the way I see it. Makes no difference really. Just a thought.

@Ross Jenkins  I don't really agree with that.  I love Sarah Jane Smith and the adventures they go on, but I don't think her character fits The Moment at all.  Rose/Bad Wolf fits that bill perfectly, but if it was Sarah Jane they would have had to completely rewrite the entire character to have it fit right.  Not to mention I think there is a certain importance to the War Doctor not actually knowing who Rose Tyler is yet.  I would have much rather seen Sladen appear in the 50th as actual Sarah Jane Smith if it was possible.  Like perhaps she happened to be in the area when they were flying the TARDIS in with Smith hanging from it and she saw them and followed and had a brief reunion with the Doctor and meeting the Kate Stewart and she could have recognized the name Sarah Jane from the Brigadier's stories and allowed her to tag along.  Though I suppose then the problem would have occured of when Clara uses the vortex manipulator to jump back to where the Doctors were so she would have had to go off and do something else (unless it had enough juice to pull two people.)  I just couldn't see Sarah Jane Smith doing some of the lines and things that Bad Wolf Rose does as The Moment.

@Ross Jenkins I love your idea, Elizabeth would've been great as the Moment, and that photo with John Hurt, David Tennant, Matt, Jenna and Jemma Redgrave honouring the Brigadier would've been incredible.

@Ross Jenkins  I know what you mean, I love his Doctor a lot but when I met Tom Baker himself a few weeks ago... it wasn't unpleasant but not a pleasant experience either.

@Ross Jenkins  He certainly has a very unique and overbearing personality, and I don't think it's uncommon for it to clash with people a bit.

I have to say though, having encountered him in real life, he comes across as a genuine and all-round decent bloke.

@Baker Street… is the Moment! Getting Tom Baker and Nick Courtney together on set for SJA would have been an experience- they were drinking buddies in real life and very good friends. I'm too polite to recount it here, but anyone with access to the issue of DWM with Tom's tribute to Nick in it should read it- there is a very moving, but hilarious tale about Nick's final words to Tom on his last hospital visit before Nick passed away.

I don't really like his attitude when it comes to Doctor Who. It's always like he only cares about himself being in the centre of the attention. Like when he spoiled the big surprise of the 50th... "I'm not allowed to talk about this, but I will, becase I am Tom Baker, I can do whatever I want."
