There’s been a lot of big Doctor Who news today, so here’s a handy little summary of all the main points and a few extra bits from the press coverage.

  • Jenna-Louise Coleman has been cast as the new companion
  • No details on her character were revealed except a few hints: “It’s not often the Doctor meets someone who can talk even faster than he does, but it’s about to happen…”
  • “…Jenna is going to lead [the Doctor] on his merriest dance yet…”
  • “…Who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters…”
  • “…Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy meets girl.”
  • Jenna-Louise starts filming in May and will first appear in the 2012 Christmas special
  • The BBC will air 6 episodes from Autumn 2012, including the Xmas special. The remaining 8 will show in 2013
  • Moffat says they’ll be more than just 8 episodes in 2013
  • Matt Smith is contracted for all episodes up to and including 2013
  • Amy and Rory will leave in the fifth episode of Series 7
  • The Weeping Angels are back in episode 5 for Amy and Rory’s “final encounter”
  • On the Ponds’ final episode, Moffat promises: “not everybody gets out alive – and I mean it this time!”
  • Moffat says the Ponds’ departure doesn’t necessarily mean the end for River Song
  • The Daleks are back in the Autumn run of series 7
  • Moffat says Matt Smith still “hasn’t made up his mind yet” on how long he will stay with the show
