Cumberbatch in the upcoming Star Trek film sequel.

Matt Smith has responded to the rumours from earlier in the week suggesting that Benedict Cumberbatch is being lined up to play the Master in the 50th anniversary.

Unsurprisingly, Smith claims to know nothing, but thinks the increasingly in-demand actor will be too busy: “I know Ben and I’ve not heard anything about it,” he said. “But he’s a wonderful actor and a mate. I think he’s a bit busy being a Star Trek villain, and he’s Sherlock Holmes of course, so he’s a busy man.”

The quote comes from an interview to be screened tomorrow morning when Smith guests on ITV1’s Daybreak. The Radio Times has posted some more highlights.

Again, Smith addressed his future on Doctor Who and his answer is pretty much the same as ever: “It’s a thrill playing the part I don’t want to give it up anytime soon. We have a whole season to make and a Christmas special as well, so I won’t be leaving anytime soon. We’ll get this season out the way and see where I’m at. I take it season by season and I take the job day by day because there’s no other way you can do it.”

He also speaks about Karen leaving, “It is sad for me, but the show is bigger than any of us,” and appearing at the Doctor Who Convention next month.

Matt’s interview will be shown on Daybreak tomorrow between 6:30-8:30am on ITV1.

Thanks Mark.
