Series 8: The Final Writer?

doctor-who-series-8-teaser-trailerSo far all the writers and directors for Series 8 are known, except for one – episode 10′s. However the final piece of the puzzle may have been revealed.

A report from the Liverpool Echo claims that Frank Cottrell Boyce (Millions, 24 Hour Party People) has written an episode.

Boyce is quoted as saying: “It’s like joining a family. It’s a great thing to be involved with. I grew up loving Doctor Who, and my teenage son was a big fan of it too.

“It’s a pleasure to write it and I’m looking forward to seeing Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor. I’m hoping there’s a bit of Malcolm Tucker in there too.”

The report concludes with: ‘There is talk his script may be a double episode featuring the Daleks.” However this seems to date back to a rumour from earlier in the year. The Daleks are actually thought to be in episode 2, written by Phil Ford.

This is good, and as for the Dalek episodes, lets just hope this / these are decent. We haven't had a good one (excluding Day, as they weren't the main plot) since 2008.

I really hope this is true! Frank Cottrell Boyce is one of my favourite authors of all time - and he can write good screenplays. I really want to see his take on Doctor Who.

...So why can't the Daleks also be in episode 10, I ask the writer of this blurb?

And... cue google searches, to see what else he's written.

Excellent news, The more new writers the better :)

I respect RTD so much. He revived the show because he knew it had to be done, and he had the power to make it happen. But, when the show no longer needed him, he returned to just being a loving fan. What a guy. Quite possibly the best Whovian to ever live.

I was hoping for Withouse to return...still he may have more time to come up with a brilliant script next year.

And besides, the more new writers the better.

Oh well, I suppose I have to wait S9 for a Whithouse or a Chibnall ep., anyway I'm happy to see new names too!

As a big fan of Luther, I'd love Neil Cross to come back, and his series 7 episodes were full of good ideas

But I'd be happy with any writer so long as it wasn't Gaiman or Chibnall, really.

Chibnall? Cross? Whithouse?

Hopefully one of those three, preferably Whithouse.

Careful everyone, this article doesn't seem very trustworthy.

First of all, it says that Cottrell Boyce is "believed" to write an episode and that it's "a Dalek two-parter". Those are rumours that are almost half a year old now. There isn't any new information.

Also, the "it's a pleasure to write it" quote doesn't sound at all like he's completed his script. It sounds like he has just been commissioned.

And finally, one of the producers talked about there being "two new writers" this series. Cottrell Boyce would be the third.

My guess is that they used the announcement of Deep Breath to re-use some very old material from when they got a chance to talk to him a while back. And it's likely that his script was pushed back to series 9.

I had heard his name brought up before on here but never realized he wrote 24 Hour Party People, one of my favorites!

Interesting. If this is true that means that there are three new writers for Series 8! I'm unfamiliar with them however it's always nice to have those who haven't wrote for the show previously, write one now.

It'll be interesting to see what he has planned, assuming he is in fact writing the episode.

I was hoping we would finally get a woman again, but okay. I think he is properly a writer for Series 9 though

Mr Cottrell Boyce was rumoured already some months ago, so this would lend weight to those rumors.

Amy says Peter Davison is the Thirteenth Doctor!

Keep in mind that this doesn't necessarily mean that his script will be a part of Series 8. Mark Gatiss wrote two scripts this year, but only one will be a part of Series 8, and we know that Tom McRae has turned one in for later as well.

Hmm, I'm unfamiliar with this writer, but I'm certain he shant disappoint.

Also, if anywhere, I'd prefer the Daleks here, compared to episode 2. I'd prefer a late into the series appearance from them, compared to earlier. Also, I persoanlly wouldn't mind 2 Dalek episodes, if it does happen. If they have interesting plots and conflicts, it would certainly be worth it. Might make up for Aslyum's barrell load of missed opportunities!

@MJJ  No reason but the key words are "double episode". Plus this dates back to a rumour earlier in the year that said there would be a two-part Dalek opener written by FCB which obviously turned out to be false.

@Ottoman14 @MeglosProductions  Please don't bring back Neil Cross! I loved Hide but the Rings of Akhaten was appallingly terrible (the whole alien religion thing was a good idea but there was WAY TOO MUCH SINGING and none of the aliens had any kind of personality - the also looked allot more like people wearing rubber heads than is characteristic of Doctor Who).

MetamorphmagusWho

Now that you mention it, you're probably right. I suppose it could be him, and the information about it being a Dalek two-parter is false. Probably not though if it's true that the producers said there would only be two new writers. I would love it to be either Simon Nye or Richard Curtis as I absolutely adore their episodes, but I doubt it.

@Notsosmartguy Yes, they could do with a rest. But it seems inevitable that they will be in this series at some point.

@giddir Imagine somebody commenting 'Anyone but Moffat', you would be crucified on here. What on earth is wrong with Davies coming back to write an episode? The guy who wrote Midnight, Rose, Parting of the Ways, co-wrote Waters of Mars

bl0ndie98

@supermoff  @Notsosmartguy They said they'd be in this series because Capaldi wants to fight them, which is fair enough if you've grown up loving the show. But after that they should stay away for a season or two.

NumberNine

They just want to do one for Capaldi's sake, I think. It's always been his dream. Plus, I think Phil Ford is the right guy to do it!

@Amy is Hannibal I think his script was pushed back to Series 9. I emailed his publicist back in August last year and she said he hadn't even started writing it yet.

He seems to have dropped off the radar -- again!

@Amy is Hannibal But technically that's Series 9.

I would hope that a 'double episode' means two parter, but then again, it's probably a sequel to E2.

@Notsosmartguy  @Ottoman14 @giddir  'do we really need to start this pointless stupid debate'.

I agree with you Mr Notsosmartguy, but surely your response should be directed at 'giddir' who made the comment?

@Moxx Poor Tom McRae was meant to have written an episode in the slot that eventually went to Midnight, too. Doesn't have much luck that bloke!

DasManiac

@The Finn @Amy is Hannibal Probably not going to use the script. I forgot his name but the guy who wrote Rise of the Cybermen wrote a story for Series 7 and it was never used.

The Finn

@DasManiac @The Finn @Amy is Hannibal The guy woud be Tom McRae. I just checked and it seems it was never sure it was going to be used in Series 7. Maybe the mysterious writer of episode 10 is actually him.
