Series 8 Launch Trailer Breakdown

So here we go again for the first time this year! Let’s waste no more time and take an in-depth look at the first full length trailer for Series 8.

Note: The following will be based on casting, filming, rumours and plain old speculation. This will not contain spoilers from the leaked episodes. In other words if you’ve been reading our “What We Know” post all year, you can safety read on.

On a final note, please don’t post spoilers or script extracts from the leaked episodes in the comments. Speculation is a huge part of the fun for many fans so if you know exactly what is happening, please keep it to yourself.

As the trailer opens we see several surreal scenes including this angle of the TARDIS.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(2)

Figures can be made out in the distance if you look carefully here. At first glance there’s a Teselecta similarity but it could match up with the Dalek eye seen seconds on.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(3)

As with several TARDIS shots in this trailer, it’s hard to tell if these are specially filmed trailer scenes or part of an episode.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(4)

This one definitely isn’t actually from Series 8, rather Jenna Coleman’s reaction to the news that almost half the episodes had leaked.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(5)

A fading Dalek eye. We soon hear ominous Dalek sounds and a voice stating, “Life returns”. This must be from episode 2, Into the Dalek. A story that is rumoured to do exactly what it says on the tin.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(6)

A great panning shot of the TARDIS console. As we can see there have been some changes since we last saw it. The lighting is much warmer and it the Doctor has “put up some shelves.” He must have been in a pinch.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(7)

Clara: “I don’t think I know who the Doctor is anymore.”

- Tumblr, Christmas Day, 2013.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(8)

As filming revealed, Capaldi will be wielding the same Sonic Screwdriver that Eleven did.

Not pictured: merchandise men crying.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(9)

The Dalek-esque voice says “Life prevails” as the 12th Doctor does his best Earth Song reenactment.

Again, it’s hard to tell if this is a specially filmed scene or part of an episode.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(10)

A blurry shot of the TARDIS flying through space in what looks like a re-used scene. More on that later.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(11)

“I’m the Doctor…”

When Capaldi tells you this, you’d really believe him. Notice what looks like Victorian attire here, likely the opener Deep Breath.

“…I’ve lived for over 2000 years…”

According to Capaldi, 2,055 to be precise.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(12)

Originally rumoured to be Jack the Ripper in the opener, this half-faced villain is guest star Peter Ferdinando.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(13)

This robot we first saw back from filming earlier in the year. This is thought to be from episode 6, rumoured title, The Caretaker.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(14)

The freaky eye agenda continues.

Series-8-TV-launch-trailer-(15)

Filming reports lead us to believe this lovely alien is from episode 5, Time Heist, possibly in a bank vault of some kind.

Does anyone else think the airlock screengrab looks a bit like the Byzantium from ToA/FaS? Just sayin'.

It all looks great, don't get me wrong, but looks like way more effects than they ever had in the RTD era, especially with the T-Rex. As long as they're reliant on good scripts first, then the effects, this can only be a good thing! Otherwise, slightly worried...

he doesant sound very scottish maybe he had to tone down his accent a bit

So, to my (American) ear he seems to have lost his Scottish accent from the closing scenes of TotD. Anyone on the other side of the pond care to weigh in on that? It could just be we only have a few snippets of dialogue to go on.

My guess about the line "Into darkness" is that it is on the Dalek episode. Also, I have to say, I'm really intrigued by the reuse of the clip from The Doctor's Wife; it's not like the BBC to just reuse footage like that in trailers, particularly not for something as huge as Doctor Who. (Or at least I think so; I'm American, so I'm not sure.) Could the Doctor be revisiting his past adventures to fix his old mistakes? If so, why is he going back to TDW?

Potentially, this could be the best series of Doctor Who to come out yet. Finally, we have new monsters coming in unlike most other series of Doctor Who (Except the Silence for Matt Smith). The best monster so far looks to me from the trailer to be the Robot or the Robot knight. Although, there are many more monsters to be shown but are being kept  a secret. Also, Peter Capaldi also looks to be a really good Doctor suiting the role very well. Not long to wait now!

Just came home after a week without internet access to find a new DW trailer. I may have squeaked a little when I saw the T. rex.

I just love the new-ish look of the tardis interior. it feels so homely:)

Okay here's my theory..

When the doctor says "it's about time I did something about that" (or along those lines about his many mistakes) it got me thinking, what if the doctor is revisiting some of his past adventures to change the outcome? If he really is more sinister, perhaps he feels more vengeful and wants things to end more brutally as part of his evil streak? If the dalek seen is indeed blue, then that implies it could be a dalek from the classic era, as weren't they silver and blue? Also the Dinosaur immediately reminded me of invasion of the dinosaurs from the classic era, and when Clara appears to be falling the thing on her wrist looks like what the doctor, any and Rory had to wear in the dalek asylum? Just a thought for anyone to agree/ disagree with :) I just have such a strong feeling that that's a part of it!

Am I the only one hoping for the Paradigm Daleks to return? I know they were controversial, but they haven't had a full appearance since, well, their only full story- Victory of the Daleks in 2010, over 4 years ago! Various cameos aside, I feel we need to see more of them and what they are really about. After all, they cleansed the bronze Time War Daleks and now they seem to be the only Daleks around. I have always wondered about the continuity of when they escaped in their ship at the end of Victory...perhaps this can be picked up on sometime in the future (I'm looking at you Gatiss, don't let Moffat write another Dalek story...) *ducks for cover*

The 14th Doctor
The 14th Doctor

On the BBC Facebook page, they uploaded 5 screenshots of the enemies seen in the trailer. With the caption, 'You're a wanted man, Doctor...'

I have a theory that this year will feature aliens trying to kill the Doctor (like a bounty).

I also wonder if it's because he's the only man in existence who can bring back to Time Lords, therefore everybody wants him dead so that the Time War will never restart.

Just a theory, but it really does suit the "I've made many mistakes, it's time to do something about that". Maybe he's finally getting sick of having a bounty on his head.

This series looks so good. He reminds me of David Tennant we saw from the end of series 3 and until the end of the specials. And that moment in the Dalek eye. WOW WOW WOW! August 23rd couldn't come sooner!

kinda hoping that this season has a lot to do with the multiple clara's split through time and space... the dalek eye reminds me of asylum, and so does the pit that clara is travelling down. i wonder if she's remembering any of it/if it comes back into play... i am a lot more excited for this season than i was for 7 part 2, and capaldi seems to be bringing in a much different atmosphere to the show with him. lots of fun!

I think he will be a serious type of doctor but he will be a bit funny sometimes that would be great

The person in the hood could be Merry Gejelh from Rings of Akhaten seeking vengeance after their planet froze from the lack of a heat source... Or it could be a Zygon. By the way it is rising, it looks like it is transforming back into its normal form. It would make sense seeing that UNIT is in this series and the Zygon plot is still unresolved.

that figure in the corridor/dalek eye stalk picture sure does seem like a weeping angel... Anyone else agree?

The Fez Master

I've watched this trailer so many times! I don't think I've ever been so excited for a series of Doctor Who! Who else thinks the character in red facing Clara could possibly be the Pyrovile Priestess?

The number of times I have watched this trailer could be described as unhealthy.

I'm curious. The shot of the TARDIS flying through space, which DWTV calls a re-used scene - does anyone know where it's actually from? I'm not doubting DWTV's knowledge (I'm pretty sure the whole website is run by a bored TARDIS), I'm just wondering where exactly it's been lifted from. Obviously, the other re-used shot from The Doctor's Wife is quite easily identifiable - the former, not quite so much. Anyone know?

Baker Street is on the Orient Express

I've got a few points to mention:

- Is the second picture actually inside the Dalek by any chance?

- The new TARDIS interior is already my favourite yet.

- Twelve and Clara look brilliant together.

- T-Rex in Victorian London? *shakes fist* MOFFAT!

- "Life returns"/"Life prevails" - Huh?

- Jack the Ripper is the Terminator!

- That has to be one of the coolest-looking aliens ever from Time Heist

- Coal Hill School and explosions! The Caretaker looks to be quite a good episode.

- Airlocks! Is River Song back by any chance?

- Is that a soothsayer that Clara is looking at?

- Is that robot from Robots of Sherwood in a knight's helmet/suit of armour? It looks fantastic!

- DWTV should turn to comedy as well as Doctor Who!

DWTV, that was just brilliant! Couldn't stop grinning!

"The Dalek-esque voice says “Life prevails” as the 12th Doctor does his best Earth Song reenactment." was a personal highlight!

@JLS1138 No, no, he's very definitely speaking Scottish :)

TARDlSkey

@JustJordsss I doubt it, since he'd be going back through his own personal timeline and changing too much of his past. It would not only create countless paradoxes, but it may also annoy a lot of fans - to just 'rewrite' previous episodes like that.

@JustJordsss I wonder if he'll finally go back and rescue Peri - you know, after just abandoning her on some alien planet with nothing but the shirt on her back....

@Master Michael Moon I think we haven't seen them (featuring much) because the powers that be realised the AWFUL mistake they'd made in so drastically ret-conning an ICONIC British design classic!!

No mistake, these were meant to be the NEW Daleks but public opinion is a strong force, especially in fandom, and the new paradigm has been quietly kept in the background since it's colourful introduction. (Not counting the utterly random stone Dalek from Pandorica/Big Bang) Asylum was mainly cool, bronze Daleks and it's also bronze looking Daleks in the trailer for series 8.

Good riddance, I say. I hated them. Gatiss wasn't keen either.

He's just referring to the mistakes he has made throughout the years, not just the bounty on him.

@The Fez Master Yeah I thought that too. Although I don't doubt they may make an appearance, this trailer is only the first half of the series so I doubt they would make an appearance or even hint at it so early as this.

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship. They've just edited out the spaceship I think.

@BazHood @JLS1138 I'll take your word for it Baz! Perhaps that's just his low, serious voice as opposed to his "holy crap I just regenerated and we're crashing" voice

The Big Finish audio series is answering that very question right now.

@Amy is Hannibal  I have a bit of a headcanon that the reason why there are only those Doctor's in the timeline on Trenzalore is that when the Doctor eventually dies (after his millionth incarnation... or there abouts) his friends/children/companions etc build tributes/'graves' to him on various different planets, some being fairly small, others being relatively large like the grave at Trenzalore. Different 'graves' would be linked to different times in the Doctor's life, so for instance the one at Trenzalore includes the time stream from the First to the Eleventh as that is where the Doctor regenerated into the 12th, 'restarting' his cycle. Just a bit of an idea for you to dwell on.
