Drat you, you got my hopes up it was something about River with the diary shot.

HA HA I am laughing already at that scene

If he was channelling the 7th Doctor he would have 2 spoons and would be playing them during the fight :)

his reminds me SO MUCH of the Jon Pertee story, The Time Warrior. The Tardis sitting in the woods, the Doctor messing about with the locals and taking them out with the simplest of weapons (his hands or a bag of harmless chemicals) and his costume. Capaldi must be feeling great playing one of his childhood hero's! "I am the Doctor" - Peter Capaldi 2013

Looks like a berry spoon. Trust the Doctor to come up with a use for that thing.

Hee, a spoon! Such a Doctorish weapon, love it! But he's not the first, Angel once defeated a villain with a spoon, in Season 5. :)

I don't really see the need for a stunt double in this scene.  I would have thought Capaldi would have been more than able to engage in combat.

The Doctor - saving the universe with a kettle and a piece of string and now it seems... a spoon.

Yup, this looks like Gatiss' work all right XD Fun, but silly. I mean, we remember spitfires in space, don't we ;)

oooh not sure about this in principle though some solid directing could stop this scene from being incredibly cringeworthy. but then i cant imagine ever cringing at peter capaldi so ill have faith that the team will pull it off

The Robin Hood costume is just so ridiculous!! Such a cliché and so not historically accurate...

Thank goodness we have editing teams and Murray Gold! Imagine just watching these filming snippets as the actual episode. *Shudders*

Move over fezzes and bow ties. Spoons are the future icon of Doctor Who.

This could be painfully cringeworthy or fantastically badass. Given it's Capaldi though, I'll guess it'll swing more towards the badass side of things.

Oh, and did anyone else have a flashback to Alan Rickman's Sheriff on Nottingham in Prince of Thieves? "Because it's dull, you fool; it hurts more!"

I'm thinking the footage with the stunt double is just their rehearsing the actual movements, prior to the pro cameras rolling; there's no real energy to their gestures.

I'm also definitely looking forward to Tom Riley's facial acting, when his character reacts to the spoon coming out. (Not sure why but I was half expecting a jelly baby. Think how funny that would have been.)

This is the second time the Doctor redefines the meaning of "spoon" from "eating tool designed for soups" to "percussion instrument" and now to "melee weapon". Brilliant. Just brilliant.

The brave Doctor from Gallifrey

Saves us all every single day.

When Riley appears the ladies swoon,

But the Doctor fights him with a spoon.

Yes, brave Sir Doctor stands up tall

And gallantly he beats them all.

Bravely taking to his feet,

And never considers a swift retreat.

Bravest of the braaaave, the Doctor!

I don't know where that came from. The actual song popped into my head so I though I'd keep myself busy aha! I've never done anything like this before but I'm quite proud of it! XD I love the little twirl he does, and the fact that me just has a spoon on him, as you do. Anyway, I'm really excited for the Twelfth Doctor, the show is in good hands with Peter Capaldi; a bold and brilliant casting.

considering capaldi isn't going to be like matt smith's doctor, i'd have to say, the spoon might be used as a badass sort of thing, as if capaldi is saying "i can kick arse even with a spoon" instead of just a crazy joke

TheDoctorOfWho

He literally does the "I'm scary look at my red lining" thing that everyone made a joke of! THIS IS A GOOD THING!

@Adric the Genius  General Safety. It's generally not a good idea to have your lead actor in a situation where they could hurt themselves. Capaldi probably isn't trained in sword fighting, especially with an unconventional weapon like a spoon. There's a risk he'll hurt himself. It's always better to have the trained stuntman take over. And that stuntman has probably put in several days of training for that fight. All fight scenes in TV and film are choreographed. All the movements are practised. It's like a dance. That stuntman probably spent days rehearsing that fight and Capaldi probably didn't have the time to do so.

the doctor is the charecter batman fan boys think he is. By that I mean the doctor can basically do anything he wants to save the day no matter how absurd or ridiculous and it won't come of as BS simply because he's the doctor.

@angelusnathan  Think about the working title of the episode- then think of the film WestWorld. Beginning to make sense...?

@angelusnathan In an episode that may well be "aliens make Robin Hood re-enacters think they're the real thing", for all we know so far.
