I must confess I've never hear of him but either way I look foward to seeing him in the finale!

He looks familiar but I can't seem to put my finger on where I've seen him. Wait...

Looks on Wikipedia

Ah... it... appears I know him from the music video of "Spirit in the Sky" by Gareth Gates, as the Kumars appeared in it for Comic Relief.

Ehm...

Poor Moffat, having to make up a load of bull for the 'statement' for every new cast announcement!

I'm glad the word aid was in the article otherwise this would gather Master Rumours ;)

Well, Goodness Gracious Me, we are getting some unusual casting for the series.

From what we've all seen, it really looks like that, despite some continuing presences (Clara, the same Sonic, etc.) Series 8 is going to be quite different and a bit unusual!

Please stop stunt casting. Ugh. Frank Skinner and now him. Light entertainment or pop 'stars'. Hire some unknown or great known actors. Need I remind you all what happened to the show when they started casting light entertainment stars in the 80s. I'm looking at Ken Dodd and Alexi Sayle. I'm sure there were others.

I presume his role then will be smaller than his wife's (Meera Syal) in The Hungry Earth 2 parter!

Interesting! Certainly seems like a great host of fine actors etc for the finale. I have a feeling that this series will be amazing, I love the Moff and all his ideas (which most of you may know) so this series shouldn't be anything different.

Gosh, spoilers have been a huge fiasco haven't they. I'm going to America for Comic Con in a couple of weeks and will be trying to avoid them there, but I'm sure all the fans there will be very considerate. Still sad about no Who panel :(

Haven't commented in a while, this may be the only one for a while as well, thanks DWTV for being so organised and taking extra measures to avoid spoilers. I just need a memory worm to unsee certain things, scripts mostly. I hate myself - all in good time, I'll be fine.

To my fellow DWTV readers, thank you for your lovely comments on the five favourites the other day, didn't get a chance to reply. And thank you all for being so considerate with spoilers :)

Cheers guys,

K-Ci

A good casting choice, as with most of the time.

Better get a comment in before some idiot posts a spoiler and forces DWTV to have to block comments again.

I once saw this guy in "Would I Lie to You?" but I'm not really familiar enough with him to make a proper judgment of him. Still, any news is good news. Being on series 8.

He said small contribution, so I'm imagining his role to be just that. I have a feeling he may just be playing himself.

I'm not familiar with his work, but I'm sure he'll be great in Doctor Who nonetheless! :D :D :D

They haven't announced him earlier. Another outdoor filming soon?

@supermoff To be honest, (minus when he's coaxing LINDA members to stay behind) I think even Peter Kay's performance is pretty good until the Abzorbaloff scenes. I think he gets a bit too unfair a share of the blame for the weaknesses of Love and Monsters

@Jason_Darko I will wait to pass judgement. Catherine Tate was a light entertainment star, primarily known as a comedian. She ended up being one of the greatest companions of all time. Billie Piper was a teeny bopper pop princess with little acting experience, but Rose (love her or hate her) turned out to be iconic. I think I'll wait to see how he does. In the meantime, Moffat appears to be trying very hard to include a more ethnically diverse cast, which I think is a good thing.

@Jason_Darko Would normally be inclined to agree with you but have to make an exception for Bhaskar because he has shown that he has serious acting credentials (in things like 'the Indian doctor') as well as good comic timing in his earlier work.

@Jason_Darko The 80's weren't the only time that comedians have been cast. In the modern series alone we've had Simon Pegg, Tamsin Greig, Peter Kay, Lee Evans, David Mitchell, Ropbert Webb, Bill Bailey and many more that I can't remember, and they all did a good job (yes, even Victor Kennedy/ the Abzorbaloff)

@Jason_Darko Oh, there were others. Since the revival we've had Tamsin Greig, Simon Pegg, Richard Wilson, Bernard Cribbins, Lee Evans, Anthony Head, Peter Kay, Roger Lloyd Pack, Steve Pemberton, Catherine Tate, Bill Bailey, Lynda Baron, Olivia Coleman, James Corden, David Walliams and Mark Williams. And of course Peter Capaldi himself.

All with varying levels of other acting experience but all ultimately having come from or being well known for their comedy or 'light entertainment' work. I see no reason why continuing this trend will start damaging Doctor Who now, when it was fine under Eccleston, Tennant and Smith.

That marks the 2nd person who I've first seen on 'Would I Lie to You' to be cast in series 8 (1st was Keeley Hawes).

Agreed, I thought he was a creepy bad guy until...you know he turned into the Azorbaloff

Yep, Ben Miller, Keely Hawes and Hermione Norris are the only ones I've heard about. Mostly because I liked the shows they were in (Primeval, Spooks and Line of Duty).

@Jason_Darko And, accounting for cameos, let's not forget, Matt Baker, Davina McCall, Anne Robinson, Derek Acorah, Richard Dawkins, Trisha Goddard and Paul O'Grady.

As it seems to have been implied that Sanjeev Bhaskar will have a reasonably small role, the possibility that he may be making a cameo should not be ignored, and none of these were detrimental to their episodes.

(Also, Zoe Wannamaker, Jessica Hynes, Felicity Kendal, Geoffrey Palmer, Clive Swift, June Whitfield, Hugh Bonneville, David Mitchell, Robert Webb, Joanna Page - and of course, Nina Wadia should be included above, so I guess this really isn't a new thing for series 8)

I live in New Zealand so I'm extremely fortunate to be going to San Diego Comic Con!

Not to mention David Mitchell was in the previous season. It's all part of Moffat's plan to slowly swap out the entire cast for people who have appeared in "Would I Lie to You?" I hear Moffat's already got Rob Brydon lined up to play the 13th Doctor. See, he thought we wouldn't notice, but notice we did.

I managed to miss the deleted comment TG, so have no idea whether it was someone being deliberately spoilery or just someone forgetting to switch on his brain before typing...

@The Outer Space K9 I don't seem to know as many people appearing in this series as well. I know Ben Miller (from Johnny English), Frank Skinner and a vague recollection of Sanjeer Bhaskar from a Gareth Gates music video for Comic Rellief.

Gah! Now part of me really wants to see what he wrote, but the other part of me knows that'd be dumb because it would spoil something. Damn whoever invented spoilers!

And thanks DWTV for making sure the site stays as spoiler free as possible in wake of recent events.
