R.I.P. Caroline John 1940-2012

We are saddened to report the passing of Caroline John, who played Doctor Who companion Liz Shaw.

The BBC confirmed that Caroline died on the 5th June. She was aged 71.

Caroline first appeared alongside 3rd Doctor Jon Pertwee in 1970′s Spearhead from Space. She left after one season but returned to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the show in 1983′s The Five Doctors. She reprised the role once again in the 1993 BBC Children In Need special Dimensions In Time.

Steven Moffat said: “Caroline was a brilliant actress and in her role as Liz Shaw, a tremendous co-star for Jon Pertwee in his first year as the Doctor.  She was not just a sidekick but a scientist in her own right and a match for the universe’s number one know-all. The Doctor’s companions should never be his assistants – they’re the people who keep him on his toes, and that’s what Caroline did.  From everyone at the show, our thoughts go out to Caroline’s family.”

David Parkinson of Big Finish Productions told BBC news: “She was a brilliant actress and a lovely, kind soul who was a joy to be around and who was interested in everyone. She will be greatly missed.”
