No Doctor Who Panel At San Diego Comic-Con 2014

capaldi-clara-time-regen-sceneAs many suspected during the announcement of the World Tour dates, Doctor Who will not have a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con this year.

The news comes via SDCCBLOG who state:

A representative at BBC America confirmed to us that there will indeed be no Doctor Who panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

While there’s still likely to be some Doctor Who happenings around the convention – BBC has already called for fan art to decorate its booth, which typically sells Doctor Who themed merchandise, and last year also saw an offsite fan meetup for the 50th Anniversary – there definitely won’t be a panel at this year’s event. And considering the announcement about Capaldi and Coleman’s first US appearance being in August, we don’t expect any festivities BBC America has planned to include the two stars on site.

I've got a feeling that they're going to debut any new content on the tour itself?

It's a different approach, and I think it'll be a fresh change instead of just attending Comic Con. Really excited for the tour.

Other than spoilers I'm not sure what they would talk about…

I hope a visit to Craig Ferguson is in Peter's schedule! That's all I really want!

Aw Well- I'm sure the world tour is worth it!

Hardly a surprise, they'll barely have finished filming by then!

Am I the only one not that bothered by trailers and the like, last year for example, DOTD was shown on Nov 23rd, and that was the day I was looking forward to, and whether the trailers came out 1 week, 2 weeks or 2 months beforehand really wasn't a big deal?

Makes sense. The series wouldn't have even started by time comic-con is on. We wouldn't have even seen Peter Capaldi properly on screen. The only thing people would be asking would be regarding spoilers.

The reason that there is no comic con this year was the massive back lash of British fans not getting a 50th trailer till a long way down the road. Plus considering it is a British Television show a lot of the British fans felt short changed and insulted.

Well I suppose it's different without a younger chap. Capaldi has a family after all... can't go gallivanting off all the time. Seems like the Tour was a compromise.

not too surprising. they have the world tour and the new season to deal with at that time.

Disappointing but to be expected! Then Doctor Who on the Comic-Con scene has always been disappointing (trailers for comic-con attendees only) so I suppose we can't get our hopes up.

At least we won't get any trailers exclusive for Comic Con which... are annoying for those who don't attend.

Cue a mob of angry whovians who are going to comic-con.

Ok, is it just me or are comments working really well now? (and mine actually appear immediatly not after hours) Yesterday's site maintenance seems to have been very successful.

No exclusive trailers...I'm cool with that if it means no tiresome arguments again!

Oh... that's surprising, I suppose they decided to focus on the tour instead, I reckon we will get the first trailer around two or three weeks before the premier then.

I love how the picture suggests that the Doctor and Clara have found out about this and are deeply shocked at the prospect of not going to San Diego this year. *The Doctor: "Oh f*****g great, have you heard about this Clara? What do we have instead, bloody miserable rainy Cardiff weather instead of sunny San Diego". Clara: "Oh never mind, I'll bake a soufflé". The Doctor: "No, just please no."...

I don't think this is a bad thing at all, as many will jump to the conclusion that it is bad. The World Tour covers the Who team visiting America so that's fine. Interviews will appear on plenty of other platforms anyway and will no doubt appear on YouTube and this site. Plus we don't have to deal with another big ho-ha over a trailer being kept secret. Hopefully this means that the team are trying to keep a lot of the series secret this time and want to surprise us. Which can only be a good thing!

Comic Con people have to realise that their favourite actor/show/movi/whatever turning up every year is not a right, it's a privilege.

Why would any of you want to bring up the fights last year about the people from Comic Con getting a trailer? Seriously? That was last year, stop complaining. I mean that in the nicest possible way, but did it matter that the Americans got a trailer when we didn't? I'm not to fussed about this, because remember, just because there is no panel doesn't mean we won't get a trailer. There's no strict law saying "All new trailers must be shown at Comic Con".

@Planet of the DeafI agree. I never got all the fuss and complaining for a trailer last year. We were going to see the special on the same day no matter what, so I don't see why wanting to see a few seconds from a few clips about four months before it airs was so important. I did love the 50th anniversary trailer though, the one before the trailer for The Day  of the Doctor was released, that was awesome! And with series 8, I'd rather first see Capaldi's Doctor in full action when Series 8 airs, but that may just be me I suppose. :)

@Mr 11 Er, the Doctor Who trailers haven't been Con-only every time, only some of them. When I was there in 2011, they uploaded the trailer they showed us pretty much immediately.

@Mikeyboss182 We'll most likely get a trailer around a month before broadcast, which would be late July.

MaraBackman

@edoe101 It will be remembered in infamy as "The Trailer Debacle of '13", as that particular issue showed the fandom's ugly side. But most likely this decision has nothing to do with that, but is simply a logistic matter. Capaldi & Co are traveling around the world, after all, so they can't stop everywhere.

Notsosmartguy

@edoe101 I bet we'll get one very soon considering we might have a late August debut for the new series.

Planet of the Deaf

@LGwalchmai95 @Planet of the Deaf I remember the whining about how people felt let down and devastated by the BBC because 2 months before the 23rd November there hadn't been a trailer...

That 50th anniversary trailer was brilliant, but then that's because it was something created especially, rather than a few clips from the episodes taken out of context!

@Malohkeh @Mr 11 There was a SDCC trailer in 2011? The only ones I remember being talked about were the Day of the Doctor trailer last year and The End of Time trailer in 2009.

Indeed there were. The pre-credits clip from Dinosaurs on a Spaceship and the bar scene from A Town Called Mercy.

@Malohkeh @edoe101 @Notsosmartguy I love it when they air on BBC One without warning (or at least, if a warning was given, I didn't acknowledge it). I remember when the Series 7 trailer aired during the Olympic Swimming. I was breathless and restless for a whole 30 minutes! Much like the Olympic swimmers themselves!
