John Hurt on Doctor Who Return

John Hurt’s role in The Day of the Doctor seemed like a perfect one-off, but that hasn’t stopped talk of a return.

Hurt himself inadvertently started rumours months before the 50th had even aired with an interesting tweet when he congratulated Peter Capaldi on his appointment as the Doctor.

Recently, Red Carpet News put the question to Hurt directly and he doesn’t seem very comfortable answering.

“I can’t think for a second… You’re asking me to answer something which I can’t answer,” he says, before adding “But I can’t think there’d be any reason to do that.”

See the video below.

So this means that Season 8 will have two Doctors again like the 1986's episode "The Two Doctors".

I don't think he's suggesting anything. To me it's obvious he's just been surprised by the question.

Looks like he is leaving his options open, Good man. Gotta love a Doctor with handlebars :)

I don't like that the pictures are overlapping with the text right now

There shouldn't be another multi-doctor story for a while. As much as I loved the character and would love seeing him return, if there is not a meaningful story, I don't think it's a good idea. Unfortunately, we've missed his time as The Doctor, and bringing him back as a recurring character would ruin the show.

If there was a 8th doctor spinoff, I could see him returning, and that would be good. Unfortunately, they can't make him younger, so it might be a bit awkward.

I so want him to come back but only if Moffat had a story for him, like the problem if River will come back he would need a story.

I'd like to see him again but I can't see what reason there would be to bring him back... we'll have to wait and see!

As much as I love Mr. Grumpy, I think his return isn't necessary and would just confuse things. However, I'd love a spinoff with his Time War years.

I don't think the War Doctor will return to the main show but maybe for a spin off perhaps.

As much as I would love him to return I'm struggling to see a storyline in the near future where the War Doctor's appearance would be necessary. However maybe if Capaldi does find Gallifrey maybe he could fit in their sometime soon.

I smell an epic movie....with John Hurt and Paul McGann in a Godfather 2 style story.....now THAT would not get in the way of the TV show itself and would give Peter Capaldi a fair bash at being THE Doctor...as for mini-sodes as it were, well, why not just make a double length mini episode or two and we've got a strange 20 - 25 minute episode, now what a novel idea that would be huh?

He was splendid on TV, but I'm interested in what he would do for audios. The mythos of the War Doctor is built on a man who ages into the elderly figure shown during the 50th. John Hurt could portray a younger version on his Doctor and work up to the older portrayal despite being a wise and wily 74 years old- which is a splendid number to reach.

As much as I loved John Hurt in TDOTD I think his story is done, but I still think it would be a great idea if novels could be written about the events in the Time War or he could come back and do some Big Finish!

hurt dosent need to (but definitly should) return in future episodes but he needs to return in a movie or a 1 off miniseries on the time war

Well i dont think the war doctor should return, because he was created to soley exist to fight in the time war. In my eyes, the time war story is done, we got our answers plus the time lords are alive again

I wouldnt mind though maybe a comic or novel series based on the many battles he fought in, or some audio dramas

I would Like to see more but there is no need.

I would love to see a pre hartnell doctor IE a 30-40 year old version of hartnell before leaving Gallifrey that would be interesting

Peter Capaldi's "No sir.... all 13!!!" cameo suggests at some point we will be returning to the "fall of Gallifrey" and this would be the ideal time for Capaldi and Hurt to share a little screen time.

Any meeting before this would have to be during the timewar with a war weary Captain Grumpy version of the Doctor. The Last Great Time War is pretty heavily time locked, of course.

But that can always be written around.

I really hope he returns. His character was so much more interesting and less complex than... River Song for example. If his return is done right then it'd be awesome.

He doesn't NEED to come back, but it would be a fun surprise. However, I'd much rather see Paul McGann return for an adventure with the 12th Doctor instead.

It's worth noting that John seemed saddened at hearing the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman at the event, which may explain his strange reply.

While it was great seeing him, I think his story is done...on screen. I wouldn't say no to an audio adventure or two!

It would be interesting to see him return after TDOTD, but the stories he's in will need to all be Time War related. So in that respect I'd say he should be a one-off Doctor, as I think the Time War is done.

I'm not sure a War Doctor return would be suitable myself. I mean, it would be very good and we always love a multi-doctor story, but we have already seen him regenerate and I feel that kind of puts a lid on him as a singular story character.

Maybe the war doctor could return in one of the 12.doctor's bad dreams? That would be one of the few things that could work.

I think perhaps Paul McGann would be better suited to a return.  Somewhere near The Night of the Doctor, but with one of his Big Finish Companions.  He could meet Capaldi in Series 9 or in a Christmas Special.

@Polyphase Is he a Cyberman? :D

...Handlebars ...Yes? You know, on their head... Never mind. I'll leave.

@Jack Johnstone The difference is that it make total sense for River to return, since she's implied she's met multiple incarnations of the Doctor and she's his wife, versus the War Doctor pretty lived his entire incarnation within the timelocked Time War, so there's literally no reason for him to return unless it turns out there's something we missed.

Oodkind

@TheOncomingFish I agree. I loved him, but there's not really a good reason too. And if he is overused, it will ruin the idea.

Electric_Tuna
Electric_Tuna

@Nightmarish That might seem like a good idea, but I don't think it'd work.  It's a bit like asking for an Eighth Doctor spinoff, it wouldn't work as well as it would on paper then on actual television.

Kylephantom4

They changed it because disqus seemed a little disappointing with its updates

Oodkind

@Richy Woo He could go break himself out of the time lock for an unexplained by "necessary" reason and go insane like Dalek Caan, and then he could be crazy and turn into the valeyard! It would make sense for Moffat!

Temporal_Tomato
Temporal_Tomato

@Clara Prefect  Possibly, but what I'd love to see is Big Finish doing more Audios with companions from other media. Fitz in The Company of Friends was spot on with how I pictured him in the EDAs. But Big Finish would probably work better for a minisode.
