Cumberbatch Rules Out Doctor Who Role

sherlock-promo-single

AKA Bandersnatch Cummerbund

We’ve heard rumours of him being cast as the Master to the Doctor himself but it looks as though Benedict Cumberbatch has ruled out appearing in Doctor Who in any capacity.

The Sherlock star told audiences at the Oz Comic-Con [via]: “I’m never gonna play the Doctor, and nothing to do with the Whoniverse.”

His reply doesn’t come as much of a surprise though, Cumberbatch said in the past that he wouldn’t like to be the Doctor stating: “I didn’t really like the whole package – being on school lunch boxes.”

Well, too bad. He would do a great Doctor. I like Matt Freeman, Dr Watson from series. The Captain Lestard guy was cool too.

I don't see him as the Doctor, but I would love to see him as a guest star in an episode sometime in the future.

What I would love to see (and think would be pretty clever) is for him to make an appearance as Joseph Bell . . . who is the real life inspiration for Sherlock Holmes! Even better, why not have Mark Gatiss play Arthur Conan Doyle in that episode as well?

He seems genuinely surprised by the fame that he's garnered over the last few years. Fame is a double-edged sword, as the cliche goes. It cuts both ways, good and bad. The extreme attention and merchandising that goes along with being The Doctor might be a little overwhelming for him. From what I've read and seen in interviews, he's a lovely and modest man. I wish him the best in whatever he chooses to do in the future.

He used the word "Whoniverse" -- I wonder if he's a fan and just doesn't want to spoil the magic by being in it.  ;-)  RTD has mentioned in interviews that he's very happy he can go back to being a fan again.  I think there's something to that.  It's a different experience being inside as opposed to outside.

He wasn't that much of a hipster, when he accepted the roles in The Hobbit and Star Trek.

Huge Cumberbatch fan here but I really don't see Cumberbatch as the doctor. I wouldn't mind seeing him as a villain though, or how about just as a character the Doctor helps. For once, I'd like to see him play someone 'small', afraid, very plain and ordinary, not at all magnificent like Khan or Sherlock. I think that would be interesting.

I'm not sure whether he's being pretentious, precious or just a little superior ?

I think it's a good actor, but i don't see him as The Doctor

Suits me fine - I dont think he would be a good counterpart for Capaldi!

I know of many people that want to see him in this role. Personally I don't know how I would feel but if I were an actor of his caliber and people wanted me to play the dotor I would not hesitate for one second.

Fine then, Cumberbatch, we didn't want you at our cool party anyway. *sulks off*

John Hurt probably said the same thing once upon a time.

I'd love to see him as a guest star, but as the Doctor or the Master, not so much.

Smart lad. Unless Moffat comes up with a really imaginative, original character creation, he's definitely better off going after theatre and big-screen challenging roles.

The irony being, of course, that he's chasing Hollywood roles that will see actin figures and other merch -- perhaps even school lunch boxes -- made featuring him.

How about a crossover then , that would work, if he plays as Sherlock, since the shows is run by the same guy

Couldn't care less tbh. Not only is he an overrated actor (martin freeman outshone him in S3 Sherlock), but he is overexposed at the moment. Im sick of seeing him EVERYWHERE, and hearing his name cropped by people suggesting he join Doctor Who, the new Star Wars, Fantastic Four and essentially every other film in the making. The guy really needs to slow down, hes making like 10 films a year lol. And in those films he seems to be playing the same 'cold and moody' characters, and if he doesn't change his act I suspect his appeal will soon wear off. So because of that overexposure (and possible typecasting), I can respect his decision not to appear in a show as hugely popular as DW, but he doesn't need to be a pompous little -(insert curse word)- about it...jeez the guy full of himself or what?

Except for that character he already played in the big finish story forty five... Never going to be in the whoinverse indeed

Thank God for that. Don't mind him being a guest role, but wouldn't want him to be the Doctor, considering he's already Sherlock, don't want him intruding on Doctor Who as well.

I would be happy if they just did wholock for comic relief or children in need.

Benedict Cumberbatch has already played a iconic villain in Star Trek, So I don't think it would be right for him to take the role of The Master. Even though he would be good as The Master.

Would have liked him to maybe paly a one-off part as a villain or something but oh well. Plus he already is a part of the whoniverse technically as he was in a Big Finish Doctor Who production :D

Good. I really wouldn't have wanted him as the Doctor. Or the Master really, I'm not sure he could really do it. Now as the Valeyard, maybe.

No surprise given his booming movie career.  Maybe he'll do a guest appearance 15-20 years from now.

Now head to Big Finish's website and feel the irony.

Nothing to do with the Whoniverse indeed. Nothing at all :P

He's a big fan of the show and his mom has appeared in three serials in three decades. But, I would have loved him to take a role. This is kinda sad.

Maybe he can lend his voice for a villain instead of directly appearing

I agree, it would be typecasting. The Doctor and Sherlock are very similar in many ways. The Master wouldn't be a good idea either really, he's played quite a few cold calculating genius baddies recently. It would be difficult to see him in any role without thinking of him as Sherlock for me, because he's already so iconic.

Oodkind
Oodkind

Nor should he. He is already the lead of one of the most popular shows of the decade, and coming into Who would be kind of strange. He is a terrific actor, but it's not the best place for him.

DW_girl

I agree in all honesty. He certainly shouldn't be the Doctor at all. Sherlock and The Doctor are in some respects, very similar characters, and written by the same writer, so it would just be strange. I don't even think he should be the Master. But, i clarify, I love Benedict and his portrayal of Sherlock is absolutely brilliant, and that is what he should stick to.

TheSoundofDrums
TheSoundofDrums

That's a shame he won't be a part of Doctor Who entirely. I reckon he could've played a really good role as either a supporting character or a villain due to his brilliant acting skills. Either way I respect his opinion.

Rorschach's_Journal_of_Impossible_Things
Rorschach's_Journal_of_Impossible_Things

While I would have loved him as the Master, I can understand why he wouldn't be in the Whoniverse. Still, plenty of villains for him to play, as Avengers 2 could use his villainous charm.

Innocent Cumberbatch... thinking that saying this will make people not think this is a whole massive conspiracy between Moffat and himself, and that he will be playing the next Master.

Gustaff
Gustaff

Its not that big a surprise. When people go on and on and on about something to no end (benedict playing the master, doctor, guest star), it really puts people off. Doctor who is no different, keep it up long enough and non-fans will never give it a try because you've worn it out on them.

@chinnysandshoes  He played Van Gogh once. And the scene that comes straight to my head whenever I think of that program, is one of him sitting on the floor of a plain white chamber, a cell of some sort, legs pulled up to his chest, arms cradling them. Van Gogh might have been a magnificent artist, but the character as played by Cumberbatch? So very very small, completely helpless. It was like watching a different man.

@TheSoundofDrums  Agreed. I can see why he might not want to be the Master or the Doctor because of hype, but I'm curious as to why he doesn't want to have any role at all.

@Gustaff  "When people go on and on and on about something to no end (benedict playing the master, doctor, guest star), it really puts people off." See Chris Eccleston for a case in point.

At this point in his career he is probably getting paid almost as much per movie than Capaldi gets paid for a full season of Who. If you were in Cumberbatch's position which would you choose?

Good one. Didn't even occur to me.
