According to a report in The Express, the Master will be back for Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary and be played by Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbatch.

A source apparently told the paper: “It’s fitting that the Doctor comes face to face with his ultimate enemy, The Master, for the 50th anniversary and it’s felt Benedict is the perfect choice if schedules can work.”

“Fans will love the idea of the man who plays Sherlock Holmes taking on the Doctor.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this rumour. Whether or not there is anything more to it this time remains to be seen.

Last year, Steven Moffat was posed the question and said that “Benedict has to wait in line probably” due to John Simm still expressing interest in the role.

As for Cumberbatch, while he’s ruled out appearing as a future Doctor in previous interviews, he seemed open to another role.
