Capaldi on Track to Be “One of the best Doctors ever”

doctor-who-series-8-filming-capaldi-clara-queen-street-tardi

The Radio Times have today posted some info on Peter Capaldi’s debut series citing a “source on the show”. It’s very vague so spoilerphobes can read on without worry.

Here are the main highlights:

  • The BBC are said to be “delighted” and “thrilled” with the five completed episodes so far.
  • Capaldi looks on course to “make one of the best Doctors ever”.
  • The storylines have started from “the bottom up” with Capaldi having a clean slate with little reference to his predecessors.
  • “He is his own man – very distinctive.”
  • The chemistry between Capaldi and Coleman is said to be “sizzling”.
  • Capaldi will be “more distanced from his assistant, more of a mystery. Less a mate, and someone she looks up to. She has to try and gauge him – but dramatically it’s very satisfying and onscreen they work very well together.”
  • Capaldi’s performance has echoes of Jon Pertwee, but he is also a Doctor for a “modern age”.
  • “There is a real buzz about this Doctor, and of course the monsters are great.”
Step back in time...

Grin. Of course, the Doctor Who PR department would have to say that the new Doctor was exceptional no matter what was going on. However, Capaldi is a charismatic and talented guy, and I am sure he'll be wonderful fun to watch.
And if they can find a way to make the relationship with Clara - whom I have found a bit bland -  "sizzling", then that's got to be a good thing.

Glad that he'll be less of a mate this time. When you stop and realise how little we actually know about him, the main character of a show that's lasted for over 50 years, it's actually quite astounding. ROLL ON CAPALDSTER!

I'm sure he'll be in my list of top 12 Doctors!

Best news in the article is that they are starting with a clean slate and that production is on schedule. Obviously the doctor is in incredibly safe hands with Peter C, but I think the new broom production crew will be what will make this new series shine as well. I felt Series 7 lacked editorial and story tightness and oversight and the split in timing hasn't worked for me

I also dislike being told by production team that their version is "the best ever". It's not a competition. Each actor and version of the doctor brings strengths and weaknesses but as the story continues, it's up to the viewers to find what they do and don't like in each iteration.

I always felt a little alienated by The Moff's frequent comments that Matt was the greatest doctor ever and greatest actor to ever play the part as if it was fact. While I do not share his view on the first part of the statement by a factor of 11, I am inclined to agree on the second part but that is my opinion, not fact. Will we now start hearing rom the team that Peter C is the greatest ever?

Good news that everything is going so well and look forward to the next two years of full series with a fresh new take on the doctor and back to good old adventures but perhaps not as excited about sizzling chemistry. I'll settle for sizzling story telling.

Even though this is of course an awesome read , the cynic in the back of my head is telling me to disregard it because its a calculated internet press release. Of course Capaldi is going to be amazing, but I will make up my own mind about his ranking in the best doctors of all time thank you very much!!!!.

I'm sure the people who don't like him are largely shippers like the Cult of Skarose, who don't understand life depends on change and renewal.

I'm so excited for the new series. They only have 5 episodes finished by the start of May, I doubt the premiere will be August.

Pertwee is my second favorite Doctor, so this is VERY exciting news.

During the Time of the Doctor my dad asked, "so is this the new companion then?" I was duty-bound to correct him, saying that she had in fact been the companion for an entire year. However, I could see why he would think that as a (very) casual viewer because with Clara having three different introductions with months in between each, the audience never properly accepted her as having actually joined the Doctor. The situation wasn't helped by the fact that she decided to travel in the TARDIS when it suited her while the eleventh Doctor probably spent whole centuries (knowing him) in-between picking her up for an adventure. Hopefully alongside a new Doctor Clara will become more accepted as a constant companion, perhaps with some definite character traits being created for her since the only characteristic that Moffat ever mentions is her being a 'control-freak', which hardly seems flattering for the character!

Yup, it all sounds very promising. Certainly, the fan footage suggests Jenna and Peter are getting on very well, which is a good start!

We've had 6 series of boyfriendy Doctors, who while having occasional scary Alien moments have generally been the sorts of blokes you can understand the Companions fancying in a conventional girl/boy sense, so clearly this will change a bit here.

What will be fascinating is the Clara Doctor relationship. Clara isn't the type to accept being bossed around or patronised, especially after all she's been through with 11, so I can see sparks!

On the one hand employing an older Doctor was a risk with many viewers only used to younger actors in the role, on the other bringing in a massive Who fan and consumate actor like Capaldi meant there was little risk of him getting it wrong!

@RhonDOH I'm kinda looking forward to him showing up on Graham Norton, myself.

I just sent Craig Ferguson an email asking if Peter would come back to plug the show. Anyone who hasn't seen his previous visit should go find it on youtube right now, if you want to really know the man soon to be piloting the Tardis.

@KarenBee"I also dislike being told by production team that their version is 'the best ever'."

You're going to have to get used to it, I'm afraid. It's called "marketing." Also known, less politely, as "hype," and even less politely when spelled out as "PRBS".

Every member of the production staff is going to indulge in this, it's part of the training for any creative commercial work, which is what Doctor Who is. You're not going to hear Stephen Moffat complain about Matt Smith's line delivery, or the quality of Mark Gatiss's prose, in public.

About the only thing you can say about the source article is that the production hasn't run into any major hiccups, such as the bus getting damaged in transit for "Planet of the Dead." Or script issues, or monster costume design, or miscasting, etc. Given the state of entertainment news coverage these days, that counts as something positive: it means the network has the predicted flexibility that it wants when it comes to scheduling Series 8 (i.e. it's not going to have to push back its expected broadcast date).

@KarenBee Blimey, Karen. An intelligent, balanced and well thought out opinion. You want to be careful with that. Cheers.

@Richy Woo To be precise, this is a calculated internet press leak, to make it sound less calculating :-)

It's similar to political leaks, which usually come from the top - "Sources close to the Trade Minister suggest that the government will be approving the project."

@MrThorfan64 He can't be the best doctor! He looks older than his companion! He would look awkward 'in a relationship' with her! And he's not hot enough! AAAAH!!!!

Last I read they were shooting episode 8. They may only have five edited with effects added, but they will have three more going through editing, post, and effects. I'd say August is definitely possible. Usually, a series is still shooting the last episodes when it premieres.

@Gallade Zero For a while  I wasn't the biggest fan of Pertwee, but I've been seeing of lot of his stories recently and he has definitely grown on me.

I know that I'm not going to like him as I like Matt, but watching other jobs of his, I've started to appreciate him as really good actor.

The whole "I don't see this anymore because I don't like the actor" it's a completely rubbish, I didn't like Gedeon Burkhard at his beginning as the Second Owner of Rex, but he grew up on me a lot. And at the same time I tell you that I didn't like him on Alarm fur Cobra 11, even being one of my favourites.
