Could someone explain to me what it is about The Hungry Earth et al and Closing Time that is so bad? I mean they're pretty good stories... move along at a decent pace... don't have any internal inconsistencies that I can see? I wonder what it is about them that people dislike.

For example Cold War to me was just dull. It felt like a filler episode to me. The CGI was woeful much like the Lazarus Experiment in quality but at least it had a good *story*, Cold earth just felt like a bit of a lame duck.

Cold War shouldn't be on this list for me, I rather enjoyed it.

The main criticism from some is that they didn't like the idea of Ice Warrior escaping from it's armour. But I personally found it to be a very creative idea, one that worked well. The way it killed crew members and threatened the 'Cold War' was pretty impressive. Gatiss' best episode in Doctor Who

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS should be rated a little higher, while The Rings of Akhaten is not better than The Beast Below. I'd personally have The Rings of Akhaten second last. I didn't really enjoy that one.

I am very afraid that TTOTD, as an underrated episode, will be on the next list. It deserves to be higher!

Rings and Cold War above Journey? Man, I'm losing faith in Doctor Who "fans".... Cold War was weak, Rings was a 10 minute short stuffed with bad plot stuffing. Journey's only flaw was a predictable time loop but it was damn fun. All my own opinion of course.

All i have agreed with is night terrors.

Everything (maybe not widow, it should be at 26.) should be higher!!!!

hasn't a Town Called Mercy been amongst these lowest??? Definitely worse than 27-29 imo

Underrated episodes of the week: rings of akhaten and the beast below

Cold War is not great but deserves a better spot

Hmmm... Yeah, I am fine with this. Haha Still sad about "Vampires in Venice" though :(

But Journey is my favourite episode of New-Who! Also Rings strikes me as an interesting one, some people absolutely hated it and others have devoted entire tribute pages to the story.

A little dissapointed some of my faves are so low on the list. Especially Rings, my favourite non special episode of New Who!  My Ratings are: The Power of Three 10/10, Beast Below 10/10, Hungry Earth/Cold Blood 9/10, Rings of Akhaten 10/10, Cold War 9/10, Closing Time 10/10, Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS 10/10.

A few faves are beginning to appear. :( Still, looking forward to the Top 10! (but I have a feeling a certain episode has probably already won. *cough* Day Of The Doctor *cough*)

Bottom List Updated:

#39 - Let's Kill Hitler

#38 - Night Terrors

#37 - Closing Time

#36 - Dinosaurs on a Spaceship

#35 - The Wedding of River Song

#34 - The Bells of Saint John

#33 - The Vampires of Venice

#32 - The Lodger

#31 - The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe

#30 - A Good Man Goes to War

#29 - The Crimson Horror

#28 - The Girl Who Waited

#27 - The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood

(Should also point out at this point, that just because they're this low on the list doesn't mean I don't like 'em, same can be said with the main list cause at this point they're all over an average of 7, though I'm still annoyed at how low Beast and Journey are)

Planet of the Deaf
Planet of the Deaf

None of my Perfect 10 episodes have appeared yet which is good!

I mentioned yesterday that the Standard Deviation for an episode like RoA would be very interesting, as some people love it, while others hate it.

I would have ranked RoA and Closing Time higher, but while all 6 stories have good bits, none are perfect either and it's probably fair that they are in mid table mediocrity, albeit I would have many nearer the leaders rather than scrapping near the relegation places (the football analogy seemed appropriate, especially for Closing Time!)

I completely agree with this list. Unless you ignore the fact that I think 'Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS' should be much higher. More importantly though, 'Let's Kill Hitler' is worse than all of these episodes and the ones in the previous list, so WHERE IS IT!!!!!!!!!

I can not believe Closing Time is down:(

Rings and Closing Time should be lower

I agree Closing time should be here but all of these stories should be higher.

Can't believe Closing Time is this far down! It's an awesome episode :(

I'll go along with that

The concepts of these stories was Great, but somehow went off course and turned out to be NOT great. The Biggest problem trying to shoe horn it into 45 minutes.

The Rings of Akhaten, Closing Time AND Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS? No way, those are some of my favourite episodes!

DasManiac

I'm glad these are rated low but most of them deserve to be lower. Cold War deserves to be in the Top 10 though. It was a phenomenal episode.

AlexanderofAlzarius

How come there are only 39 places? Shouldn't there be 44? 39 would only be three times 13. This would not include the four Christmas specials or the 50th anniversary special.

TheBiPunishment

The Power of Three - 7 (But I'd rate it a little higher in the list), The Beast Below - 8, The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood - 8, The Rings of Akhaten 5.5, Cold War - 8.5, Closing Time 7.5, Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS. Quite a few great episodes here, but I guess this around where general consensus is that they are good, so I can live with their presence here. Although I'm not happy with how some episode, such as Let's Kill Hitler and The Wedding of River Song, have done apparently quite well.

It seems like Series 5 is looking the most popular. Would certainly agree with Rings and The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood, although I did enjoy the latter quite a lot. I thought Journey was really good, the bad acting aside.

The Beast Below and The Hungry Earth and Cold Blood do not deserve to be here at all, yet again, they are too underrated, oh well, at least I know where they truly lie, higher up obviously, why isn't The Time Of The Doctor here, seriously, who would vote that as good, it was absolutely terrible. Worse than anything of Doctor Who that I have ever, ever seen. YUCK! EW! LOL! Horrible!

@LaraHarris  Closing Time - Dull ending and we've seen it before, Cybermen underused, overall very similar to The Lodger, with less originality, and the last scene is added "just for the cliff hanger YEAH NOW LOOK THE FINALE NEXT WEEK".

The Hungry Earth - Didn't like the characters. Inexistant cliff (seriously, we all guessed that there were more than 12 Lizards...), reaaaaally slow pace, Amy's absence was a bad idea, f**king stupid actions like the "Oh, the Lizards are there within seconds ? Just got time to get my speakers !" or the "I have a TARDIS... but nah, let's go in a church ! [Ten minutes later] Okay go to the TARDIS now move move move !'.

Cold Blood - This one was really good. Some little flaws (screwdriver...) but overall very good Doctor Who. I wish the episode were a 50 or 60 minutes one-parter because it had good ideas but poorly and slowly executed in the first part.

@LaraHarris  Closing time is generally disliked because of it ending the cybermen being defeated by love which kind of reduces the scariness of the cybermen and is slightly corny by the hungry earth I have no idea either

LaraHarris

I just found it dull to be honest. It wasn't dreadful but it wasn't much of anything. I felt the relied on bringing back an Ice Warrior to carry the lack of any substance.

Creg23

@The Questor  I think the idea of it escaping from its armour was perfectly fine because they stressed that it's incredibly dishonourable and it should never happen and it probably won't happen again.

HisNameIsTheDoctor

@RoweMatthew  Journey is #27, Rings and War are #29 and #30. Journey did better, surprisingly. It was worse in my opinion, and Rings was a masterpiece that did not deserve to be here.

@Oncoming_Badger Agree with all of them except Dinosaurs which was a fun episode with a good ending and The Wardrobe which i liked as well :)

Two parters are counted as one story.

@JJ2000  I loved The Rings of Akhatan, The Best Below and The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood.  Cold War on the other hand, is my least favorite episode of Nu-Who and I'm disappointed that it's placement is not lower.

Because it was a satisfying conclusion to 11's story? I could say the same thing about the end of time but people hail that as the greatest episode ever. It just shows how different the fanbase is opinionwise

LaraHarris

Oh... ok... I suppose I can see why that would bother some but wasn't self awareness used to defeat the Cybermen in The Age of Steel? Kinda, sorta the same thing?

Too true :)

If it were my list though, it would be in the bottom three.

@Calebxy @JJ2000  Gee...I LOVED The Time of the Doctor. It struck a personal chord and I liked seeing 11 finally growing up and sticking around and Clara loving him no matter how old he grew. I guess we all see things differently!

Sweeping statement much? I'm not a Moffat hater but I didn't like the bringing back of Gallifrey or the hanging Zygon story either.

@HisNameIsTheDoctor Not really, it's just that those who thought it was decent are less vocal than those who thought it wasn't ;) The fact that it didn't show up in the bottom 30% of all Matt Smith stories is quite telling.
